Pro Football Focus: Trending Dallas Cowboys Players

Now that the NFL season officially over, you'll be seeing a lot of season reviews, position reviews and player performance reviews popping up everywhere. One such review is published by our good friends from Pro Football Focus, who have just released their take on Trending Players in the NFC East.

In the article, PFF identify the most improved Cowboys player, the player most deserving of more snaps and the most disappointing player of 2011. This is the second time PFF have published such a season review, last year they released their list of "Movers and Fallers". In last year's version, Gerald Sensabaugh was the most improved player, Mike Jenkins was the most disappointing and Sean Lee was deemed the player most deserving of more snaps.

After the break, find out who PFF rate as the trending players for 2012.

Star-divide

Most Improved - Mike Jenkins: Jenkins bounces back nicely in the PFF grades after being rated the most disappointing player last year. PFF note that he allowed a very good 51.9 completion percentage while in primary coverage, but they also note that he did not quite make it back to the form he displayed in his 2009 Pro Bowl season. Jenkins was fighting injuries all year but still managed to improve his overall grade from -10.8 to +1.1 from 2010 to 2011.

Biggest Drop Off - LT Doug Free: After grading out as one of the best tackles in the league in 2010, Doug Free came crashing down to Earth in a big way last season. By PFF's reckoning, Free gave up 10 sacks, five hits, and 33 hurries versus just 33 combined QB disruptions in 2010. His ranking fell accordingly, from +17.9 to -9.9 between 2010 and 2011. A move back to right tackle looks like a done deal for Free in 2012, and that should see his grades improve again.

More Snaps Deserved - Sean Lissemore: A year ago, PFF saw Sean Lee as the player most deserving of more snaps, and that turned out to be spot on. If PFF are similarly accurate about Lissemore this time around, then good things are in store for the Cowboys defensive line. Lissemore was only in on about a quarter of the defensive snaps but graded out with +13.8, which ranks him sixth among all 3-4 DEs. Here's PFF's take on Lissemore.

It hasn’t surprised us at all to see Cowboys coaches coming out and praising Lissemore for his impact in limited snaps. The seventh round pick from the 2010 draft made a big impression whether the Cowboys lined him up on the nose or at end in base or in their sub-package defense. Lissemore responded with 14 defensive stops in the run game on just 108 plays in run defense. He even held up as a pass rusher (two sacks, three hits and eight hurries) to indicate the Cowboys may have found themselves another late-round defensive linemen who can cope with a full-time workload.

Do you agree with PFF's assessment or would you nominate other players for these categories?

First!

let’s all hope switching the tackles works well for both Free and Smith. For everyone’s sake

I anticipate Free will rebound. But if we dont get somebody good at Left Guard I’m willing to bet that Tyron struggles over there in his first year.

How bad could it be though, Free gave up 10 sacks from over there last year, Smith will still be an upgrade.

I agree give Free time to rebound...

The guy was great a year before .. one bad year now hes only good enough to be a RT..
Plus let Smith grow as a RT dont let the guy finally get his feet under him as a RT then change him to LT. Give it time

Also guys how many sacks have Smith given up??? Because you guys make it seem as Smith gave up zero sacks..Also plz note that that Free 17.5 grade was while he play LT not RT.

Some say he was injured...

although it was never disclosed as to what it was.

Free Injury

I’m almost positive he was injured pretty early on, but he/they never disclosed it. His main asset is is quick feet, and he looked much slower this year. If he was injured, and rebounds, that will be a great pair of bookends, especially if they swap sides.

Read also where

Free’s performance suffered because he didn’t have Kosier to cover for him which might explain why Smith did really well. Not to take away anything from Smith, but more to give credit to what Kosier means to the line.

He won't have Kosier next year.
I believe Smith gave up 5

And most of those were in the first half of the year. He’s praised highly on here because he was our best lineman and progressed wonderfully as the year went on. On occasion dominating his opponent. All this for a 20 year old kid with no off season. Praise is well earned

Is Free a better Pass Protector or Run Blocker?

Prior to the PFF article i believed he was a better run blocker

This season. We had the most success running behind Free or on his side I believe.

Smith improved tremendously by the end of the season. He's gonna having growing pains

over on the left side but given how good he was by the end of the year, he’s ready for the switch now

I agree he's definately ready now.

But it would help if we gave him some assistance to smooth the transition.

Better chance he garners a Pro Bowl and AP appearance with Nicks as his LG vs. Arkin/Nagy/Costa.

Agree completely

My dream scnerio for the line is signing Nicks and drafting a SEC mauler in the 2nd or 3rd depending how we address FA… Smith, Nicks, Kilowski, SEC mauler, Free. Is a tremendous upgrade.

That would require addressing pass rushing needs in FA as well as I believe we will take Janoris or Dre if they are available at 14

That sounds delicious.

Take BPA in the 1st regardless of position.

I agree pending Free Agency

I believe our draft depends heavily on signing Nicks or Grubbs . If one of them are not signed its a no brainer in my opinion to take Decastro. No way we can go into next with out upgrading.

But if one is signed BPA seems about right. I believe we should be targeting Dre, Jenkins, Ingram, Decastro, Poe, Denard (pending combine), Whitney Marcelius, Stills, Brocker in the 1st. Out of those I think Jenkins is the most talented.

Going off of the Nicks signing I would love to get Jenkins at 14, Vinny Curry in the 2nd, Taamu in the 3rd

That's a good list of BPAs

NFP has these grades on them: Dre: 7.0, Jenkins: 7.0, Ingram: 7.0, DeCastro: 8.5, Poe: 6.8, Denard: 6.7, Mercilus: 6.4, Still: 7.5, Brockers: 8.0. As a reference point consider that Luck is graded @9.0.

I’m sure these grades will change some after the Combine, but good BPAs though.

he was NOT great in 2010

he was solid.

I believe part of Free's problem was Kosar's move to RG

when he moved over to help Tyron out, Free, though a veteran, wasn’t left with much help at G. You can only block so many by yourself. Smith is the more natural choice, let’s just hope the transition goes smoothly, or we could be in for another season of Romo smear the queer :(

sounds more like an excuse

he was beaten STRAIGHT up by guys coming from the outside so it does not wash

true, I saw it happen a couple times as well, but then, have we seen anyone that can block JPP yet?

I know he’s not the only one, but no help at the interior positions is certainly a factor. It doesn’t excuse Free’s play, but it’s still a factor

Lissemore and Brent

still have really not shown much. When you only get 100 snaps there must be a reason for it.

he played over 200 snaps I think, just 108 were vs called runs

The reason is that they're still young and Rat is in there all the time at NT.
nice to Lissemore highlighted

I remember when Lissssy was pushing for him; Lisssssssy writes an annual “All Small School Mock Draft” and he had Lissemore as our #1 pick

Can't fill all the holes from without

I would love to see Lissemore start at LDE if he’s ready for it; Coleman is a 1-down JAG.

If Bruce Carter can come near to doing what Lee did in his first year as a starter, that’s some serious upgrades before we even talk free agents & draft.

What about Hatcher and Rat at DE?

I think Lissy can split time at NT and DE.

that's fine too

I think Lissemore/Ratliff/Hatcher or Ratliff/Brent/Hatcher with Lissemore as the swing guy are more dynamic than having Coleman in there.

I really think the DL is not going to see any outside help this year—they need to fill 3 spots at LB and 4 spots at DB (assuming TNew is cut), that’s just about all your draft and FA ammo. DL has to get better from within by these young guys stepping up.

Lissyyyyyyy will be thrilled with this post

I agree, he needs to get more playing time.

I was excited about Mike Jenkins being our most improved player, then I saw JPP’s grade as the Giants most improved player, and I said to myself, damn this sucks.

yep

JPP looks like a potential Demarcus Ware in the making.

Definitely agree on Lissy

He deserves more snaps.

Lissy was pretty good at DE this year. I expect a much bigger role for him this year.
Anyone know what surgery Jenkins had in the offseason?

I know it was a shoulder. Sometimes those can re-injur easily. I hope JJ doesnt break bank on him during the season. I would rather let him play out his contract, cause my suspicion is that he’s JAG.

Maybe we found our next Raliff in Lissy. Put the man in coach!

when Jenkins is healthy

and he gets average safety support, he’s pretty good. Right now he is our best Corner Back

Right now he is our best Corner Back

And that is little better than steaming pile of poo right now.

Jenkins and Felix in the same first round.

Those 2 picks should have been cornerstones for this club. But they aren’t.

yup n spencer, carpenter, spears

were supposed to be game changers but i guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Just goes to show you how bad Newman is

I’m surprised he wasn’t the “Most Disappointing”

you have to have be excepting

a player to be good BEFORE they can disappoint you….I doubt anyone was “Expecting” Newman to actually be good…I think most were hoping for average….

i don't agree

Jenkins was a quality starter his first year… then last year he just didn’t showup, but most of the defense didn’t show up… this year, he played admirably while injured…. i think he’s a player, but shoulder injuries are not fun

I believe in Lissemore

I am also done with Spears. I defended this guy last year, but this year showed, that he is even below average run stopper….

I am not sure if I am safisfied with Hatcher, but I think we should try to draft one player for our defensive line….

The resigning of Spears was simply a terrible move.

He was generating zero FA interest from other teams so we sign him to a 5 year $19.2 million dollar deal!

This year Spears was outplayed by Ratliff, Hatcher, Lissemore, Coleman (and even Brent in his injury limited snaps).

The one glimmer of hope is that Spears contract only has a $3.5 M signing bonus and $4.2 million guaranteed in total. I think he’ll be a surprise cut sometime after June 1st.

When you look at Dallas' cap position and Spears' contract,

and the fact Bowen’s contract had a $7.5 million signing bonus and $12.5 million guaranteed, I really don’t think it was that bad of a contract.
I mean, no Spears is not a wonderful player. But, to become team that can compete year after year, you have to get to cap straighten out. And, to do that, you sometimes have to sign some players on the cheap.

My problem is I don't think Spears was cheap.

Kenyon Coleman was cheap. He signed a 2 year $3.5 million dollar contract and he played better than Spears.

I understand the Bowen situation but nobody was bidding against us for Spears. Why 5 years and $20 million for a disappointing player who was receiving no interest from other teams?

Yes, 5 yrs $20 million

with only $.2 million guaranteed. And the way the contract is structured, they pay him $2mill/yr for the 1st two years. So, conceivably, he could play 2 years, earn $4mil, then get cut without Dallas taking a significant cap hit. In that case, it was the same as a 2 year, $4million, which is cheap.

* only $4.2 million guaranteed
I didnt realize that.

2mil/year for a situation, rotational, DLineman.

$2mill for the 1st 2 years.

As I said above...

I think it’s possible that he won’t even make the roster this year because the cap hit for releasing him will not be significant. Still, why $4.2 million guaranteed? Who where we bidding against for Spears services? The reports where no-one else.

It was dumb.

Typical Jerry move.

do we know Spears wasnt being bid on?

Spears isnt a flashy player he is steady at best. teams need steady players, i think people expect All Pros at every position…….

The reports where that Spears had received no significant interest from other teams.

Who is asking for a Pro Bowler at every position? You’re creating a straw man.

Spears is neither flashy nor steady, he’s below average.

I would rather have just rolled with more snaps for Hatcher, Lissemore, Coleman and some other young guy.

what did you say after he was signed?

im not saying Spears is a great player or anything, he is what hes been since hes been here. solid run stopper limited pass rusher. that stayed true again this year.

it was a cap friendly deal in a time when Dallas obviously thought they couldnt find a better option is all.

I remember just being a bit surprised...

because at the time the reports where he was receiving virtually zero interest elsewhere.

I don’t hate Spears, he seems like a good guy and teammate but I’m very ready to move on. He’s a poor pass rusher and an fairly average run defender in my opinion.

It’s the cap friendly part that I’m less sure about (although yes it’s nowhere near in the Barber, Hamlin class). Spears should not be back in 2012 but Dallas would take a hit if they release him. If released after June 1st Spears will count about $1.6 million against the cap in 2012 and $1.6 M in 2013. That’s a shame.

Right now the Boys have

quite a few players signed for next year along the D line. But, all the contracts (minus Rats) are structured to where cutting them doesn’t hurt the team.

Signing a guy like Calais Campbell (6’8", 300) to a 4 yr / 28 million would be worth cutting Spears and Coleman and letting Lissemore and Brent back up. Hatcher would stay as he’s proven he’s worth his contract. The Boys could then draft another DE in the later rounds (4th or beyond) and not have to worry about using a higher pick there.

I agree.

I’d take Jason Jones and let go of Spears no worries.

that’s a good point. We were strapped, we had a known commodity, plus the time investment we had put into him. Cap friendly contract, I don’t like it but they were in a pinch. Was it the right move…probably not, now looking back at it.

but yet if you go back to when he was signed most people liked it cause it was cap friendly and Spears is a real good guy.
That's not really true.

Many people questioned the Spears contract the moment it happened.

heres the link. it starts off with positive Spears talk, only to get disrupted with Scrable talk

http://mobile.bloggingtheboys.com/2011/7/29/2303792/dallas-cowboys-re-sign-marcus-spears-free-agent

It seems about 70/30 Positive/Negative.

But then again the Alan Ball to FS move in 2010 was about a 70/30 Positive/Negative reaction as well :)

haha agreed
And here is 5 blings take on it.
I don’t like this signing at all

It’s a waste of precious cap room.

If there was one place we needed to upgrade, outside of safety, it was DE. This is a very poor use of resources and tells me that maybe the confidence we’ve had in the staff’s talent evaluation abilities is misplaced.

I don’t use statistics to tell any story in its entirety, but what exactly has Spears ever done that warrants this ind of raise?

I’ll tell you.

Nothing.

5Blings – July 29, 2011

That’s fairly prophetic if u ask me.

Spencer might be next
Jason Witten didnt make the Pro Bowl, its time to cut him what a horrible contract.
Poor jenkins

Bad coaching his whole NFL career which showed up last year and this year horrible Saftey help last year and it showed injurys this year and it shows. I believe with the right coach the right confidence in his safteys and hood health Jenkins can be very very good for us. Better than Newman ever thought about being. This is Lisse year he has to show he can continue to make plays cause we need a known commodity in his position before next years draft.

Jenkins can be a Pro Bowler

But newman at his best was one as well. And was screwed out of a couple by morons voting for Deangelo Hall

Agreed.

Newman may be washed up now, and he never became the legitimate lockdown corner some thought he could’ve been, but he was a very, very good corner at his peak.

I would love to see a Brent/LIssy/Rat tag team.

Brent getting about half the snaps at NT, with Rat and Lissy splitting the others and both of them also putting in snaps as DEs or on a four man front. Keep Rat from getting worn down and get Lissy on the field for half the plays or more – I think it could pay off.

I would just try to start him at DE (Lissemore)

it gets him on the field more
I know he played well at NT, but I still think Brent should get reps there because of his size

What about...

Brent and Lissemore on the Nose allowing Ratliff to move to DE full time.

that would be fine with me
I've actually been thinking...

the last few weeks if that’s what the Cowboys have in mind when they’ve talked about moving Rat to DE this offseason. A lot of people took that as we would bring in a big NT but maybe they think Brent and Lissemore are ready. I think it would be a great and very cap friendly way of finding improvement in the front 7.

Don't forget about

NT Callaway. He’s a big guy that was signed after the season.

Hatcher

On Twitter he said that he was trying to lose some weight to help his quickness. I believe he wanted to get down to 295. Did anybody else see this?

also on twitter Victor Butler is getting 1on1 help from Tron

http://twitter.com/intent/user?screen_name=Victor_Butler57

Good to know.
TNew had to be most disappointing.
steelers just dropped bryant mcfadden.

Worth a look or were his injuries that bad?

Stanford Routte released also.
maybe I am hyped up a little right now

but maybe, just maybe, did we find our Justin Smith with Lissemore?
I mean, we all saw how good he was last year and asked for more playing time for him, but he obviously looks like a real player as a five tech

I would hope Lissemore gets a shot at starting next year alongside Hatcher

I'd tap the brakes on the Justin Smith comparison :)

but he does show some real promise.

I am just trying to get excited about something

he obviously isn’t Justin Smith, but I mean the skill set is there

Chia, you had Lissemore buried behind Spears in your 43 rotation? Now you want him to start and emulate Justin Smith? Rat should be playing the nose for the most part, and Lissemore should be starting at one of the end spots. The rest can fill in behind with Hatcher getting as many pass rushing snaps as possible.

Sean Lissemore posted this

^^When did Sean Lissemore get a BTB account LOL

Draft DeCastro

No defensive player at our pick is worth it. Either trade back or draft DeCastro. I like this Mock http://www.worldsportreport.com/nflmockdraft13012page1.html

DeCastro or Jenkins

maybe im being turned by the hype but if not DeCastro i want Jenkins

I don't buy the Ravens taking Burfict in the First Rd

They have needs on offense: RB to replace Ricky Williams; WR to replace old man Lee Evans; OL-G, C, LT all need upgrades.

Until that team gets serious about building a legitimate offense around Joe Flacco, keep expecting them to choke in the playoffs.

Right now the only logic behind the Ravens taking Burfict in the first:

1) The kid is a barker who likes to play violent
2) Ray Lewis can mentor the guy

Lazy analysis at its finest.

Ray Lewis

is going to be 37 this year. The Ravens draft at #29 so it is not like they are spending top ten money for Burfict. Burfict fits their defensive scheme perfectly. I think it makes a lot of sense especially when you add in the Ozzie Newsome variable.

Im almost getting to the point where I hope DeCastro is gone by #14.

He’s too good to pass up. I think even if you went out and spent money on a guy like Nicks, you still take him because he’s probably gonna be the best guy left. But I think that guard spot is going to be easier to fill than CB, or a pass rusher.

There are quite a few interior linemen I’d be happy with if we grabbed a guy in the 2nd. Would you be that bummed out if we got a stud defender in the first, and were still able to come away with Konz, Zeitler, Osemele, Glenn, or Jones in the 2nd round? I’d feel pretty good about that.

Don’t get me wrong, DeCastro seems to be a cut above those guys, but how bad do we need the best interior lineman in the draft. What if we still got the 2nd, 3rd or 4th best. Im cool with that if we can begin to get the defense turned around.

Mr. President ...

Your post confuses the mind. You seem to be hedging.
Fix the lines first. Get DeCastro.
1. Never skip possible greatness.
2. Protect Romo
3. Fixing lines fixes teams faster than anything else.

Have you studied the prospects?

The drop off from DeCastro to the rest of the Gs is more significant than the drop off of the 1st Rd CBs and Pass Rushers to their 2nd Rd counterparts. There’s actually better value in the second round for both pass rushers and CBs.

If you can get Vinny Curry, Jonathin Massaquoi, Chase Minnifield, or Brandon Boykin in the 2nd round, why blow the wad in the first round on a pass rusher who might be hit or miss, or one of two CBs who may or may not fall back into a life of drug abuse? DeCastro is rated as top 5 prospect according to National Football Post, and is the best player at the G position. If he’s there at 14 you absolutely take him. Need + BPA=TD.

But ...

marijuana is not DRUG ABUSE.
Irie man. Lighten up.

chillin

I didn't mean to say abuse: damn autocorrect

I wanted to simply say “drug use.”

I have nothing against Chronic (it should be legal) but until that time, as long as you can get in trouble with the NFL, you have to be smart about being caught with it or testing positive for it.

NFP

Is not all that great of an expert source for grading draft prospects. I enjoy reading Bunting but he’s like 25 and has never been a scout or worked for a team or scouting agency. He took a scouting class and got a job writing for NFP right out of college when they first started their website.

What you said about

CBs is not true if we are talking strictly talent here. Jenkins is a top ten pick without the warts and I’m willing to bet he doesn’t sniff the second round with the warts. Fitzpatrick’s charges were dropped so that becomes a non issue. Minnifield or Boykin are not rated in the top 50 players by any respected scouting organization. I’ve seen Jenkins lock up some of the best receivers in the SEC.

The best scenario is to pay Nicks and put an experienced guard next Tron. You don’t need two younguns on Romo’s blind side. We are then free to address that sorry secondary. If you want to wait three years to be competitive, then go ahead and get some stop gap guys and hope for the best. Or else, you pay Nicks, draft Jenkins, and put Nagy at center. He’s got to be better than Costa. If Jenkins or Fitzpatrick are gone, then go to plan B. (Whatever that may be)

I said that he's so good you have to take him.

I just kind of wish someone else would eliminate the option for us.

I'm just happy

We have players on the team already that can and will get better. A lot of people maybe writing off Nagy , Arkin and Koslowski (spelling) It would not surprise me to see us sign one guard then let those three fight for the other spot. Those guys are going to get a heluva lot better with a full off season and TC Learning the tricks of the trade and getting way stronger.

Sean Lee and Bruce Carter are going to get better. Bruce Carter is going to be a stud, im telling ya. Jenkings is leaning the craft of how to be a good CB. where he use to rely on athletic ability. He improved in 11 he will get even better in 12 plus it just so happens to be in a contract year. Sad but it seems to bring out the best in players.

Lissemore, I like the high motor part, but why didnt he get more snaps lat year then coleman or spears who never put pressure on the QB? But I’m still hoping for him to be our mini JJ watts

Rout got released

From the Raiders… Guy any good? Never really saw him play.

got to be upgrade over TNew and Ball

actually some are surprised that cover the Raiders so he can`t be that bad.

He wasn't worth his contract
Their CB's next year will be ...

Larry Brown and his illegitimate twin.

The Raiders are stupid.

Water is wet.
The sky is blue.

And Davis’s son looks insane.
Should be a good 30-40 years in Raider land.
Let’s hope Cowboyland stupid ended around 20.

I miss being relevant.

If Cowboyland stupid ends around 20 yrs

Then we still have 2-3 more years left. Let’s all hope it has ended already!

NO NO NO

We are done with that. It’s RKG time.
We be owning next year.
I can see the Bowl from here.

We will be damn impacful in 2012. Although I wonder about the Eagletossers.

Hey man

2012-2013 is the 20th Anniversary of SB XXVII. We’re winning SB XLVII, Romo will win NFL MVP & SB MVP, either Dez or DeMarco will win OPOY, and Ware will win DPOY.

Again.

Amen brother. :)

Stanford Routt PFF article

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/06/14/interview-with-stanford-routt-cb-oakland-raiders/

interesting read

I think he is a gifted athlete, size and speed
he is better than Newman, but he isn’t a Revis you know, I wouldn’t mind signing him
there is Rob Ryan history here, so lets see what happens

Best FA CB

Chia, who do you think is the best between the FA corners? I was only going to mention Routt and Terrell Thomas, due to the potentially lower contract they would garner vs. a Finnegan type deal, but why not see who are the standouts.

imo

the best out there might be Carr or Finnegan, Ladarius Webb is good too but he is restricted

ESPN is reporting Stanford Rout is starting to visit teams

Routt’s agent told Josina Anderson of ESPN.com that Routt will visit the Bills and Titans in the coming days.

Can Newman come back for less?

Yes, I know he filled the bed in the last 7 games.
We all saw it.
But maybe it was injury / confidence related.
As a part timer I think he could still be impactful.

PS Yes, I’m remembering how good he really has been. And the first 9 games this year.

He has played well sporadically

in the recent past. It seems he has gotten injured more often and his play goes through the floor when it happens.

I guess… He could perform pretty well filling in say, the 4th corner option. The thing is though, you want him or a kid whose arrow is pointing up not down.

Keep in mind how much he is making as well….

On occasion

I’ve wondered the same thing. Don’t know his contract details, but I wonder if restructuring his contract would help. That or cut & resign after week 1 when his contract isn’t guaranteed.

sounds about right to me

we’ll be in good shape if Lissy’s development even comes close to Lee’s
