One of my favorite books as a child was Dr. Seuss' If I Ran the Circus. In it, a boy named Morris McGurk fantasizes about turning an old lot dotted with tin cans and other debris into the world's most amazing circus, aptly named the Circus McGurkus, replete with peculiar animals (a Foon, for example) and other bizarre attractions. Why do I bring this up now? Well, it seems that our favorite offseason sport is to play a similar and equally fantastic game: If I Ran the Cowboys. Indeed, BTB has been blowing up of late with posts outlining draft strategies, free agent targets, and talent acquisition plans that are a combinations of the two.
Some of these are strange and wholly untenable, an NFL Circus McGurkis, if you will. Others were conceived in the clear light of day, and present substantive, realistic and thoughtful strategies for turning the abandoned lot that was the Cowboys 2011 season into something magnificent. This week's salute to our top FanPosters attempts to collect all of these under one tent--a FanPosting bigtop--for your pleasure, amusement and edification. Sooooo..ladies and gentlemen, step right this way; through this door lie Ol' Rabble's bi-weekly collection of FPs from around the globe. No pushing; there's room for everyone...
Before the marquee acts hit the stage, I'd like to acquaint you with some BTBers who, like Morris McGurk, have a clear vision for running the Valley Ranch Circus (insert as many Jerry Jones jokes here as you see fit). AustonianAggie (talk about schizophrenia!) opines that Dallas needs to focus on the O-line if they're gonna catch the Giants; ChiaCrack pronounces Melvin Ingram the cure to the Cowboys pass rush woes; Michael IceBone Sisemore (handle of the year candidate) maintains that his Cowboys need to get more dog in them (or is it Dogg?). VAFan and Conn Cowboy offer free agent wishlists; CowboysFan4Life and PhillipKDick present offseason blueprints for success. I urge you to read all of these; there's a lot of fine thinking in each and every one of them.
The show begins after the jump...

Our opening act comes straight from the Midwest--from Purdue University, to be exact. Yes, ladies and germs, I'm referring to that run-stoppin' renegade, Anthony Spencer. Number 93 has been a hot offseason topic; immediately after week 17's final gun put a merciful end to the 2011 campaign, BTBers began to call for Anthony's head on a platter. After looking at what's available through free agency and the draft, however, a second view has begun to emerge: it might be more difficult to upgrade the position that initially anticipated.
DCBlueStar, perhaps inspired by Kegbearer's terrific post on Spencer, asked "Is he really that bad?," and concluded that "Spencer is better than fans give him credit for, and LOLB is not a position that needs to be immediately addressed." DCBS's take was further substantiated by a guy whose work is now solidly on my list of required reading: ScarletO. S.O. gathers a lot of important material (citing many of my favorite sources: Keg as well as Bryan Broaddus, Bob Sturm and "the Football Show") supporting his assertion that Spencer could be made much better by upgrading the guy(s) he plays next to. I have to admit I began the offseason on the anti-Anthony bandwagon; thanks to all this clearheaded thinking, I have come around. Now, I'd be happy to re-sign him at the right price. Anybody who can convince stubborn Ol' Rabble of anything gets big props. Congrats, fellas!
If you'll direct your attention upward, you'll see one of our posters performing a high-wire act. Look more closely, and you'll see that its our reigning FanPoster of the Year, Chia Crack, performing such spectacular feats of acrobatic derring-do. He's working without a net; its terrifying, yet you can't look away, because he might go ker-splat. Why? Look at his subject: Chia takes on the difficult proposition that is Janoris Jenkins. Like Scarlet O, the estimable Crack gathers some good evidence, which strongly suggests that Dallas is targeting cornerbacks in the draft, and then speculates upon the likelihood that they might pick the ex-Florida Gator with the 14th pick. What makes this so dangerous is that we've been down this road before with terrifying results (anybody care to recall Dwayne Goodrich or Derek Ross?). The Cowboys seem to have cured themselves of their propensity to draft talented knuckleheads. Might they go back to the well at a position of need? Hard to imagine...and hard not to. That's why Chia's working without a net. Nice work, bro--on this and on all the top-shelf draft knowledge you've been churning out recently.
And, now for the big finale. Please focus your attention on the center ring, where this week's headliner can be found, under the white-hot spotlight of FanPost greatness. Actually, we've already seen him earlier in the show--but a man this talented merits more than one appearance. Yes, one and all, its the Columbus Crusher, the man who always dots the "i" in Ohio, none other than ScarletO. His winning post, a look at Dallas' defensive back play in 2011, presents a combination of superb analysis, statistical acumen and graphic excellence (with a tip of the cap to O.C.C., who, as always helped with the technical aspects). I don't want to give too much away, but do feel responsible, largely for thematic reasons, to share the "If I Ran the Cowboys" aspect of Scarlet's post. Extrapolating from his evidence, he concludes:
Drafting an average cornerback to take the place of Newman would actually be a significant upgrade over Terence’s level of performance over the final seven games of the season. From Elam’s grades, it is also easy to surmise that a new safety will be starting in 2012.
I know, not earth-shattering conclusions. Then again, as Jason Garrett is always quick to remind us, this isn't about final product; its about process. And Scarlet's detailed process makes him a FanPost RKG. Have any doubts? Go here, and read.
Okay, all, the show is over. As you make you way to the exits, please join me in a rousing ovation for this week's top acts. Wanna job under Rabble's bigtop? Start cranking out FanPosts!

Can't wait until FA starts
CB starter
C
Draft Ingram plus two CB’s in the 2nd and 3rd
torchindefenses - February 8, 2012
hate to break it to ya.....
but with Scandrick and Jenkins on board…..we are not adding 3 CBs….not to mention using so much of our resources(FA money and 2 of our top 3 picks)
At best we sign a FA starting CB and draft a 1 corner in the first 3 rounds….and even that is pushing it.
We have too many holes to be using a high pick on a 4th and 5th CB,
death of the cool - February 8, 2012
Center wise who is really out there in FA?
I looked at the list and it isn’t that great, believe it or not I would like to see Costa get one more chance with a full offseason in the gym. I know some may call me crazy for saying such things but I think he could get better and may be a better option than most free agents, now draft-wise is a different story but I don’t think we are in position to justify selecting a center with our number one draft pick or possibly even our second round pick with other important depth issues on defense. I truly believe our first and second picks are going to be on the defensive side of the ball.

Okay, where does one find the time?
Who is at work typing these posts? Laid off anyone? Retired? Just wondering, I can squeeze out a two sentence comment now and then. Good stuff! Love this site!

Once you realize that sleep is highly overrated, it gets easy.
Tom Ryle - February 8, 2012
Hey Tom,
I had an an idea for a post but I lack the expertise & will to actually do it.
It would be interesting to see a composite ranking of each prospect using all the available draft rankings. If you’ve played any fantasy sports you’ve seen these rankings. They usually have 4 or 5 different guys rank the top 50 or so players then come up with a composite score for every player by averaging the rankings.
I only know of a couple places that show these ranking though:
http://drafttek.com/BigBoardPg1.asp
http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/rankings/
Just a though for some more pre-combine fodder for the main page any who.
StarloverinWNC - February 8, 2012
here’s data from last year. if one was so inclined, it might be interesting to look at the the performance of the ‘Wisdom of the Crowds’ big board compared to actual value vs. the specific big boards. it also might be interesting to see what it might have looked like if one took the ‘Wisdom of the Crowds’ big board and then applied the various statistic indicators (speed score, sackseer, lewin forecast, playmaker score) to adjust the ranks. but as TID said, who’s got time.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aq_pzudn-VEDdGpjOTQ1ZmNsSGFOZHhybG9aSXpvdXc
mocking the draft did a ‘Wisdom of the Crowds’ big board as well.

"Sleep"?
One.Cool.Customer - February 9, 2012
Hey OCC...
Is it just me or does the “Recent Fanpost” section on the main page seem to have disappeared?
Luke. - February 9, 2012
It’s not just you. The ‘recent Fanpost’ section on the front page has been taken down temporarily across SB Nation.
Short summary in this fanshot: The Curious Case of the Missing Fanposts
One.Cool.Customer - February 9, 2012
Ok, no worries and thanks.
Luke. - February 9, 2012
Of course a robot would not comprehend what sleep is.
It is similar to powering down. But maybe not. Do robots even know they are powered down? Sure, you have a battery so that your cesium atomic clock maintains time, but when you are powered up do you miss the time lost? Other than checking the current time, do you have a sense of the duration of the lost time? Do robots dream?

Thank for the mentions.
It is flattering to be mentioned on this site. The work that the writers produce is some of the best on the internet (trust me, I look around a lot).
It humbles me greaty to be among such great fans and writers. Thank you.

i could run the ranch!
First- I’m obviously the owner, ok?, ok.
Second- I appoint myself as CEO, COO and GM
Third- I trade my 2012, 2013 and 2014 1st overall picks to the raiders for heyward-bay cuz he’s fast!
Fourth- I refuse to ever give up the reigns……. EVER! Insert evil laugh here
DCfootball - February 8, 2012
I get the point
Jerry wasn’t as bad as Davis, but Davis is no longer around to point and laugh which leaves only two knuckleheads to fill his spot, Snyder and Jones.
Shwicks - February 9, 2012
As far as Corners are concerned
If ScarletO is able to conclude on his own that just average production gets us better results than what Newman brought us in 2011, you’d have to expect the Cowboys understand this as well. If I’m not mistaken, the Cowboys have recently employed stats guys. Those stats guys will be telling the Cowboys the same thing.
If all it takes is average production, why spend the 14th overall pick on a CB when this is CB heavy draft? If you can get Chase Minnifield or Brandon Boykin in the 2nd round, why go after Jenkins or Kirkpatrick in the first round? Just to be clear, I like all 4 of these guys. But doesn’t it make more sense to use the first rd pick on the clear cut best G in the draft, the hands down best Safety, or on a top player at another position under the BPA approach?
Thus, unless these guys: David DeCastro or Mark Barron are gone at 14, I don’t see the Boys going CB in the first round. They can target CB without using a first rd pick on one. I trust they come out of FA and Draft with 2 or 3 guys.
Rohpuri - February 8, 2012 via mobile
You are stealing my thunder for a future post!
I did not expect anyone to so eloquently establish the groundwork I am laying for a future post. Nice…
ScarletO - February 9, 2012
I look forward to reading it
Feel free to use what I wrote in my comment.
Rohpuri - February 9, 2012 via mobile
If I ran the ranch in fantasyland...
In my fantasyland
1. The Colts cut Peyton(Who turns out to be perfectly healthy for another 3 or 4 years)
2. The Cowboys sign him to a production based contract(like 1 million per game with 1.5 million per playoff game 16 million to 22million depending on how well he plays)
3. Trade Romo to the Browns for their 2 first round picks
4. We should have enough cap space to pick up Carl Nicks and Brandon Carr and resign Robinson and Spencer
5. First Browns pick take Claiborne. Our first pick take Decastro. And Browns second pick take Baron(best CB, OG AND S in the draft
6. And the rest of the draft is gravy
Hotrod - February 8, 2012
That's the Magic Kingdom of fantasyland.
Why would we need Peyton though when Romo is better???
StarloverinWNC - February 8, 2012
trade value
fill more holes
Hotrod - February 8, 2012
Why Payton?
Other than the fact that he is undoubtedly one of the greats, why Payton? Do you think he would fit in with what Garret is trying to do here? We have a young offensive line, we need a fairly mobile QB because of that, Manning does not fit the profile, he is getting older and a move like that would make sense if we didn’t have a top 10 QB already in Romo"……. Romo is not that bad people!
Shwicks - February 9, 2012
The only way I consider this scenario
If I knew the Browns would give me two first round picks for Romo instead of just using them to trade up for RG3.
Rohpuri - February 8, 2012 via mobile
Trading Romo wouldn't clear cap space.
Therefore, Peyton would eat up our current space. It’s the dead money that kills ya.
CotySaxman - February 8, 2012 via mobile
My bad
I thought if we traded the player the new team took on his contract, hence the reason we cut everybody last year instead of trading them.
Hotrod - February 8, 2012
They continue to pay his game checks
Which is base contract. However, we already paid the bonus money, and, with his restructured deal, there’s a lot of it. We have to pay the proration of the bonus money throughout the life of the contract. We would save some money, but not nearly his whole cap figure.
CotySaxman - February 8, 2012 via mobile
Do we have a site that tracks......
dead money and forward bonus figures by team?
Are all these figures public and disclosed?
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012
Rotoworld maintains what is known.
But contracts aren’t open to the public, in whole, so many teams likely choose to hide exactly how much room they have. Exact incentives are usually unknown, as well, so you can only get a rough estimate.
Sensabaugh and Scandrick contract details (salaries, bonus) were published, and they look smart. Next year starter pay, the next year backup pay, then the years of starter pay which can be avoided by cutting before year three. Basically saying, “okay, here’s your money. Prove you deserve it, or you’ll never see the rest of it.” Low bonuses, as well.
Also, don’t look at Scandrick’s big salary as making him a second corner. It was a luxury to pay him as much, because Jenkins is still on his rookie deal. The next year, their pay rates will reflect their positions on the depth chart.
CotySaxman - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Bob Kravitz of the Indy Star
Reported yesterday an observer of a Payton throwing session described him as ‘noodle-armed’ and well below NFL level.
I’ve dealt with nerve damage from spinal injuries – took almost a year to regain complete motor function and some did not return at all. He might well be done.
tdships - February 9, 2012
If we signed Peyton to $16-22 million, we will not have enough cap space left to sign Nicks and Carr and our own FAs.
fs65 - February 9, 2012
Manning is close to done.......
talk about dumb speculations.
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012

The trouble with this Cowboy Circus
is the head clown. He thinks he’s hansom, witty, smart and funny. He don’t care much what us fans think as long as he gets his money.
That old Arkie thinks the NFL envies him.
While he showboats and ruins America’s Team.
If Disney remakes Dumbo Jerry gets the part
untill they discover he’s just a stupid old fart.
Tom Landry was a legendary football genius
When JJ fired him was he thinking with his penius.
This team will never make another Super Bowl
till Jerry give Jason Garrett full control.
TCB Orange Dino - February 8, 2012
LOL.
Arkie envy thinks
Old fart Dumbo genius not
S. B. J. G. wins
fs65 - February 9, 2012
We should be talking about........That River in Egypt
who could be traded for more numbers of players;
http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2012/2/3/2769793/relative-trade-values-of-the-current-roster
Without more overspending and cap borrowing from the future (why they are in mess already) the roster will not be balanced and ready next year.
Most fans buy the party line; “we are only a few players away” when they should accept “Cowboys are rebuilding and below contender status”. See the poll on the defense above if you want to define D-E-N-I-A-L.
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012
if it was a Herchel Walker type deal I’d take it. It’s just going to be for far less
AustonianAggie - February 9, 2012
How about a little better than R. Williams......
in reverse going the other way to the Cowboys?
Ware and Ratliff, 2 #1’s, 2# 2’s and a third? 5 picks for 2 probowlers. Over two years. Likely to contenders.
11 top three picks over two years instead of 6.
Would you do that?
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012
What? We gave up 3 picks for RW and he was only a ONE time pro bowl ALTERNATE.
You know, I was going to continue my argument but with you, it’s just not worth it.
fs65 - February 9, 2012
So what's the price?
Pompous little twit you are.
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012
Rat MIGHT get you a third rounder.
football mensa - February 10, 2012
That's a grim estimate......
not that I can say exactly either. The money terms are important in these cases.
Cwon1 - February 10, 2012
Why in the world would they give so much to a 3rd round value......
being a logical question?
What’s the value of Ware on the open market?
Cwon1 - February 10, 2012
now how is it that a player is traded to another team , dont the other team asume fully the remaining amt on his contract ?
IRONRAVEN - February 9, 2012
Yes. Their base salary.
We still get penalized for the signing bonus, though, because it was already paid, prior to the trade.
CotySaxman - February 9, 2012 via mobile
I believe, the remaining contract does go with the player.
What doesn’t go, is the remainder of the signing bonus that may have been payed up front. This is pro-rated over the lenghth of the contract against the salary cap of the team that gave him the contract.
oldboysfan - February 9, 2012
Which effectively creates Dead Money.......
at the moment of trade. Draft picks would act as compensations and longer-term cap reduction.
The trouble is that the aquiring team has to think about the added payroll and few draft picks.
This is why the league is iliquid and trade risks are so huge. Draft picks are actually inflated in the current system. We can see the R. Williams consequences as a perfect example. The Cowboys blew their budget in two different ways.
Cwon1 - February 9, 2012
Sorry Coty
Didn’t see your comment.
oldboysfan - February 9, 2012
No problem
I appreciate someone agreeing with me regardless. Same effect as a “+1”, but more helpful to the community :)
CotySaxman - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Well chosen Rabble.
Somehow I had missed Scarlet O’s post. Excellent work. The breakdown cleary shows what has been said on BTB for weeks. Some of the poor grades have to be dropped at the door of RR. It clearly appeared that many times the defensive backfield had no idea what they were doing or who to cover. As has been mentioned before, the Cowboys confused themselves more than the opponents. Congrats to all. rec
oldboysfan - February 9, 2012
I agree. Even when they knew their set, they were still not "playing fast."
BlueNSilverBlood - February 9, 2012
Guard or Best Pass Rusher Available over CB
DeCastro would be a lower risk higher reward player than Jenkins in the 1st round. He would directly lead to points imo. Unless they decide that Jenkins could be a great return man (ala Patrick Peterson 5th overall), they can find someone of Jenkins’ value in the later rounds and get a safter pick in DeCastro. If DeCastro is gone, I would go with best Pass Rusher available.
