Dateline, Indianapolis. We are less than 24 hours away from the first arrivals to the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. The annual ritual, also known as the Underwear Olympics officially kicks off tomorrow, with special teams prospects, tight ends, and most importantly to the Dallas Cowboys, the offensive linemen all reporting for registration. There won't be much action until the weekend, as the draft hopefuls will spend the day doing paperwork and attending orientation; but it will mark the official beginning of the 2012 league year.
Sure, free agency doesn't start until March 13th, but this is the first tangible, substantial piece of new information that we've had since the season turned cold on us early last month. We get to take a look at all of those prospects we've been reading up on and watching highlight reels of.
For those that have only paid slight attention to the combine in year's past, here is how it works.
Each year, the NFL invites every eligible draft prospect that one of their many committees feels has a chance to be drafted in one of the seven rounds or a hot target undrafted free agent (UDFA). In 2012, the number of invitees reached 328, and you can look at the full list, here. They weigh and measure all and see which ones have been found wanting and which ones project to exceed their collegiate production based on athletic abilities, sans pads.
The Combine separates the invitees into 11 groupings, by position, and then runs each group through a four-day process that peaks on the final day with what actually gets all the press and attention, Workout Day. So for all intents and purposes, even though the combine starts tomorrow, the weekend is when things will really get interesting.
Follow the jump to see the position groups, day assignments and more.

Here's a look at the drills that the players will partake in:
--- 40-yard dash
--- Bench press (225lb repetitions)
--- Vertical jump
--- Broad jump
--- 20 yard shuttle
--- 3 cone drill
--- 60-yard shuttle
--- Position-specific drills
--- Interviews (each team is allowed 60 interviews in 15-minute intervals)
--- Physical measurements
--- Injury evaluation
--- Drug screen
--- The Cybex test
--- The Wonderlic Test

Last year, I included a bit of the history of the combine in the kickoff primer that I found interesting and figured it was worth rehashing considering how much of a grand spectacle this has all become. It certainly started from meek beginnings; a handful of teams pooling their resources.
Per scout.com:
In 1963, Lesto scouting combine, became the first NFL organized scouting combine in football history. It consisted of three clubs (the Lions, Eagles and Steelers), with the final two letters standing for Talent and Organization. In 1964, the Chicago Bears joined the group, thus creating the name that forty-five years later still remains intact for the past 45 years.
The Cowboys, Rams and 49ers organized Troika combine in 64 and when the Saints joined the group, the name was again changed to Quadra. Baltimore Cleveland Green Bay and the St. Louis Cardinals formed CEPO and after they were joined by the Giants, Falcons and Redskins, the formed United Scouting.
Check out the link to Scout.com above, it's a great read on the history of NFL scouting.

I personally feel the best thing the combine can do is compare two pretty equal prospects.
For example Kirkpatrick and Jenkins. Both were very good in college. Kirkpatrick has concerns with man to man coverage due to foot speed, Jenkins has height concerns. If Kirkpatrick comes in and beats Jenkins in the cone drill or is even really close, then it def. raises his stock to being the second best cb in the draft. HOWEVER, no matter how Kirkpatrick does in the combine, or how bad Claiborne does, it should never move Kirkpatrick ahead of Claiborne.
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I actually think the exact opposite is going to happen.
I think Jenkins will beat Kirkpatrick in Nearly every drill and do well on his interviews, moving him up to the second best cb in the draft.
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I`d argue he already is 2nd best.
ziggy19 - February 21, 2012
I think of all the CB's
Jenkins and Kirkpatrick have the most to lose. Kirkpatrick in the agility and speed tests and Jenkins in every test basically.
Kirkpatrick though is under less pressure(IMO) because with his height and game tape as long as he posts a 4.5 40 with a 4.1 SS time he will still go high(though will more than likely move to FS)
Jenkins on the other hand has to excell in the speed(4.3 or less) agility(4.0 or less) and Vertical(40"+) to negate both the height and Character concerns…. IF he can’t do this I thin he falls out of the first round altogether(possiblty in to the third)….
JMHO though

Jenkins is 1 INCH shorter than the average nfl cb. Not 3 inches 1. So height is not a factor.
And they both have character issues, IMO Jenkins has less at this point. He learned his lesson. Kirkpatrick got out of his, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t just as guilty as Jenkins!! It just means he didn’t learn anything from his stupidity
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
It's not whether he'll ever play CB in the NFL
it’s whether he’s a risk being picked that high that is then mitigated by incredible speed and agility. Everything I read says teams are looking for taller CBs.
dunkman - February 21, 2012
quick name any 5-9 CB selected in the first round
I await your response

First, day, should be an exercise to prove what we already know...
That DeCastro should be the 14th pick to provide stability and leadership to this o-line and this team for the next decade.
Professor1 - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I agree decastro is still my pick at 14th I just don't know if Dallas will go this way.
C is a much bigger need on the o-line and defense is in worse shape than offense. Also we brought in a bunch of guards last yr. I think we get a vet stop gap at gaurd this yr while the youglies develop. But if they stick to BPA I think decastro is the best, safest pick and will help this team for so many years.
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I predict that Dallas will surprise everyone here
and Draft Kuchley with the 14th pick…..
though I am hoping that Kirkpatrick is there, given his possible Versatility(could be moved to FS) I think he will be gone before then….
I am Ironman!!! - February 21, 2012
If they do that they prove they aren't taking the BPA approach unless Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Ingram, and decastro are all gone.
He’s a first rounder but not a 14th talent. That is drafting need over BPA
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Ironman's been high on Kuechly since mid-January
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
And not even need.
Omar Little - February 21, 2012
How is that not taking the BPA approach?
I would actually say the exact opposite of what you said. Kluechly is the BPA over each player you mentioned…taking anyone of your players, would be what is considered drafting need over BPA
descherle - February 21, 2012
I think the chance of drafting Kluechly is much higher than most people on here may believe...
He is going to be high on our big board, and if he is there at our pick, he is going to be hard to pass up.
descherle - February 21, 2012
You were saying descherle
According to CBS Sports, Luke Kuechly is ranked 19th. DeCastro is ranked 9th. Janoris Jenkins is ranked 12th. Dre Kirkpatrick is ranked 18th.
According to National Football Post, Luke Kuechly is ranked 19th. David DeCastro is ranked 3rd. Dre Kirkpatrick is ranked 17th. Janoris Jenkins is ranked 22nd.
ESPN Scouts Inc are not the only prospect rankings to pay attention to. CBS and NFP are just as reputable.
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I love how my opinion may seem laughable (see below)
Kluechly is almost a unaimuous top 10 BPA…I would say the two references you made (CBS, NFP are the lowest you will ever see him on a big board). And I can guarantee his stock will only rise after the combine. There are multiple big boards where he is ranked higher than Decastro, so its not that laughable.
I myself agree that Decastro is the better player, but sorry if i didnt see his name when its written in all lower case, last on the list:
" Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Ingram, and decastro are all gone. "
I beleive there is NO DOUBT Kluechly will be higher on the Cowboys big board than Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, and Ingram.
descherle - February 21, 2012
I could see kluechly being higher than the others.
Ingram is the best OLB in the draft but he wouldn’t have been last yr and probably not the yr before that. This is a good yr for olb’s but there’s not a huge difference between number 1 and number 5-6. I agree klueckley is a safer pick than Jenkins or Kirkpatrick and may rank ahead of them, not sure just yet. He doesn’t right now, and I don’t think he will rank ahead of both of them after the combine. Maybe 1.
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
All depends on how well they have rated them.
ary201 - February 21, 2012
Kuechly BPA over Decastro??? Lmao lmao lmao.
Not even close and NO scout will have him above decastro, not even close. The others have that “bust” factor but there is no arguing decastro is better.
Dynamicduo - February 21, 2012 via mobile
that was pure comedy
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
is that really so laughable?
Dallas had Sean Lee as a top 15 pick…..and the reports are that Kuchley might be even more athletic….not to mention that Dallas has several young Guards that they like, while having a total of 3 ILBs on the roster one of them a UDFA, and another that while an athletic freak, saw a total of 41 snaps last year….
It would not surprise me to see Kuchley over DeCastro at all….
I am Ironman!!! - February 22, 2012
That would neither surprise nor disappoint me.
There’s no question that we need help at ILB, and it’s definitely possible that the other popular targets are all taken.
Baked Potato Soup - February 21, 2012
The best part is the Eagles would have an anurism. We do not want them fixing their biggest weakness do we?
benjitsu - February 21, 2012
I doubt we will draft Jenkins
I’ll be happy with either KirkPatrick, DeCastro or Ingram.
Antonio S - February 21, 2012
While I will be paying attention
it won’t be through the TV…I anticipate that BTB will keep me abreast, and that plus a couple other sites I will get all the info I need.
BTW and only slightly thread related, I will be publishing a series of Mocks based on my “Position Outlook” series…I plan on three posts, but may expand that…so watch for them…
I am Ironman!!! - February 21, 2012
I have heard some say that the nfl combine coverage was so good that it could cause teams from not attending and just watch from home
Professor1 - February 21, 2012 via mobile
And how would they do their interviews from home?
Rena - February 21, 2012
The gms and scouts could watch from home
while the coaches could do the interviews?
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Something tells me Chia is the one "glued to the TV" vote so far
And for that, we love him.

I am Ironman!!! - February 21, 2012
Nice, so far I'm one of 6 guys who'll be glued to the tv
I’ve enjoyed watching these since 2006, the first year I had NFL Network.
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
I really enjoy watching on NFL Network as well
One of the funniest parts for me is when Rich gets out there and does it himself. I won’t be glued but will defintaly be only a previous button away at most. The fam says I cant RULE the tv
Cowboys_Attack - February 21, 2012
I always plan on getting out the glue but
if Sapp starts grunting and Deion starts singing and Duke starts mumbling…well no need in losing one`s lunch over it. Give me Mayock all day even with him losing his voice. Stick with Mayock and skip the Pepto.
ziggy19 - February 21, 2012
Just Googled The Cybex Test
“The Cybex Test is a fitness examination that is usually given to prospective National Football League players, who are entering the NFL Draft. It primarily tests the joint movement of prospects. All who take the test are connected to a special machine, which collects and computes information into figures that are analyzed by experts and coaches.”
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Is there "if I didn't have sh*t to do" option?
Omar Little - February 21, 2012
Just saw this on the NFL Network Ticker
Steve Hutchinson, G of the Vikings could potentially become a salary cap casualty.
Rohpuri - February 21, 2012 via mobile
hmm thatd be nice
Cowboys_Attack - February 21, 2012
totally off topic
but scratching my head over this one…Bob Pappa on Sirius Radio thinks Stevie Johnson is a knucklehead and teams won`t be lining up for him BUT the Eagles would be stupid to let DeSean Jackson go and that teams would be chomping on the bit for DeSean??? I agree that Stevie is A Tool but so is DeSean and I think the Eagles would be crazy to pay him 9 million to franchise him.
Also said that the Chiefs get an upgrade with Routt over Carr…not the way I see it, Routt got about 7 million per I bet Carr gets 9.
ziggy19 - February 21, 2012
Lucky #13 for Me
Stuck like glue. Haha.
And will record all of it to review. I have neighbors, (fans of other teams), that claim they want to look at their players of intrest. Really believe they just come here to eat, and drink because it is too cold to play golf, or fish. While they are good company any excuse works for them.
1Bullseye - February 21, 2012
I love Tivo
I can watch what’s pertinent to the Boys and fast forward through the chaff.
So I guess my vote is watch most of it.
I hope the Boys can get some interviews with the questionable players like Jenkins but don’t know if that’s a part of the combine.
TCB Orange Dino - February 21, 2012
Test and drills
Here’s a pretty cool link from the NFL’s Regional Combines site that lists the tests and drills given there. I would think the test and drills at the NFL Combine would be very similar: https://www.nflregionalcombines.com/Docs/testsanddrills.pdf
