The Dallas Cowboys' Jason Garrett: The Art Of Garrettspeak

Sports fans tend to be proud creatures. We think we are special, enduring the insults of the poor benighted fools who follow lesser teams while devoting countless hours seeking to gain wisdom about our beloved team from the press releases and news articles that we pore over.

This is true for all fans, but I am here to state clearly that fans of the Dallas Cowboys go to extra lengths. We have to put more effort into following our beloved team. We have to learn to understand Jerryspeak and Garrettspeak.

For those of you who may not know, Jerryspeak is the unique method of communication used by Dallas Cowboys Owner/General Manager/Media Spokesman Jerry Jones, who seems to have been born with an innate and burning desire to make sure no reporter in sight is ever left with nothing to write about. Over the years, some of us have become rather fluent at deciphering this odd, meandering, stream-of-consciousness way of expressing thoughts. No one ever achieves a perfect mastery of it, because it is a fluid, protean, and above all spontaneous thing that springs from Mr. Jones' mind, often without benefit of editing or filter. Look at this sample from January of 2009, when the team was coming off a disappointing finish to the season, and Jerry was at the Senior Bowl:

When you say you've got something to prove, is that an organizational thing that trickles down to the players?

JONES: "Well, I'd like to not be down here at the Senior Bowl. I'd be out getting ready for the Super Bowl, and that's an organizational thing, that's everybody and that includes everyone. I think that's what we want, to take each thing as it turns out. This is the time of year when we're looking at these players and we'll shortly be headed up to the combine and we're just now initiating our evaluations, specifically our games. So all of that is at this time of year, and this is a real chance. During the year you've pretty much got your focus on week-to-week. Now we can step back and look at the big picture and evaluate this year."

There is a certain timeless quality to Jerryspeak captured here. But Garrettspeak is a newer mode of communication. Actually, it is a new mode of non-communication.

More content - or is it noncontent? - after the jump.

Star-divide

It has become one of those memes out there. Sometimes, the nickname JG5000 gets thrown around as a joke, referring to his mechanistic ability to drone on indefinitely without imparting any real information. But as opposed to so many myths and misconceptions that float around concerning the Cowboys, in this case it seems to be completely accurate and universally understood.

In his brief time as a head coach, the Dallas Cowboys' Jason Garrett has just about perfected the art of saying as little as possible in press conferences. He'll talk, of course; he just, for the most part anyway, won't really say anything.

That article was referring to an interview Jason had with Dale Hansen of WFAA, in which JG just came right out and confessed that it is deliberate.

Are you channeling Bill Belichick? You're like a robot too many times. That's not really who Jason Garrett is.

Garrett: When you're in the position that I'm in, the most important responsibility that I have is to the Dallas Cowboys. Often you get in situations like this, the daily press conferences that I do, whenever I am asked a question about anything, what goes through my mind, first and foremost, is how can my answer impact the Dallas Cowboys. That's the thing that's most important to me. There are questions that I won't answer or I avoid answering if I feel like there's a competitive disadvantage to answering that question in a certain way. My obligation is to our team, to our coaches, to our players and everyone in our organization first and foremost.

That answer, at least, explained things a bit. First and foremost, this is a guy who is going to look for every competitive advantage he can find, and controlling the flow of information is one of the things he considers at all times. It almost makes you wonder why the media insists on having daily pressers with him, since they have all pretty much figured out that he is withholding more than he is giving up. JG obviously wants to go into a game knowing more about the other guys' plans than they do about his own.

I wonder how that affects the relationship between Head Coach and Owner? Jerry is pretty much the opposite from Jason, and has repeatedly shown a willingness to talk about almost anything with almost anyone, including random guys holding cell phones in bars. Normally I would think this would lead to a great deal of tension, but there aren't any signs that I can make out that this is an issue between the two. Perhaps this is the way they both want it. Jerry never has to worry about fighting for the spotlight, since JG is always shunning it and leaving the information starved media to come to him and let him bloviate. And Jason may like it that way, since he is well aware that lack of knowledge will not silence JJ. And if JJ gives the press the wrong impression about something, then doesn't that help JG in achieving his objectives? I even have to wonder if maybe he might drop some deliberate bits of misdirection on Jerry, just to get some disinformation going about the team?

Some of that may be a bit far fetched, but I do think that the two are quite comfortable with their respective roles in talking to the media. And I think it is very functional for them, since the press may be a little less willing to press JG for details he doesn't want to divulge when they know they can get something out of JJ, even if it is on a totally unrelated topic. JJ gets to be the center of attention, and JG gets to continue his role as the Red Haired Enigma.

JG must feel pretty good about things, judging from his answer to the last question Hansen dropped on him.

If you could say something to Jerry Jones and not be fired, what would you say?

Garrett: I don't think I could say anything to him that would prompt him to fire me. I appreciate the opportunity he's given me. I appreciate the approach he takes as owner of our football team.

Wait. Is that more Garrettspeak?

Funny Tom.

And I have to say that IMO daily pressers are a bit much. Get off the coaches backs. They have to work enough hours a day anyway. Weekly would be fine, especially in the off season.

Longing for the day Jerry is no longer the face of the franchise.
I'd settle for jerry giving up the GM job
Garrett isn't as polished as most would like but his future is bright as a HC

it could be this season or next but Garrett will keep this organization trending up every year. he coaches great, he brings in the RKGs & he allows young players the opportunity to prove themselves on the field
i also think since Garrett was jerrys hand picked guy this might be the one person that Jerry allows him to make personnel decisions unlike Wade, Campo or even Barry

How do we know that Wade didn't have say in personnel?

I think it’s likely that he had a lot of say, and it seems that the drafts suggest this. Some people here want to blame the 2009 draft on JJ, but it seems influenced by WP to me.

A lot of the 2009 draft was on wade
Jason Williams

Typical “Oooooo shiny”. That was a Wade move.

Jason Williams might have been the worst pick

Jason Williams gets an unfair amount of attention. We should just refer to it as part of the Roy E Williams fiasco

Remember the name, "Shante Carver?"
you act like JW was a 1st round pick

how many other teams or coaches missed on 3rd rounder?

err 4th round picks
I never liked Wade' influence on the draft

but I really can’t blame him for ’09 because that draft was so bad because we went into it w/o a 1, 3 or 5 rounder. We had to trade down to get some 3rd rounders. Unless Wade lobbied for the RW trade, Im gonna blame Jerry for that one.

Nice write-up, and I see the humor

but seriously, who in their right mind speaks candidly to today’s media? They zero in on the smallest points, criticize every misspoken word, and call for firings at the drop of a hat (except their own firings… no one seems to do that job for America). If I were in that position, I’d speak just like Garrett, Romo and 90% of others in the NFL do. Doing anything else is inviting the harshest possible scrutiny with no pay-off.

Completely agree.

“Jornalists” are looking for the headline, the opportunity to make a name for themselves.

We don’t enjoy sports anymore, we criticize.

We don’t enjoy Jeremy Lin, rather we talk about the teams that cut him and wonder when it will all end.

When all the media and fans are looking for us the chance to break down, criticize, and destroy others, what incentive do they have to say anything of substance? Our coach doesn’t trust the media? Sounds like a good coach to me.

I could not agree more
We don’t enjoy sports anymore, we criticize.

Listening to The Football Show yesterday on 103.3 and heard Tim MacMahon bristling over coach Gary Patterson giving the media little info and trumpeting that the TCU story would be over when he “said it was.” Ummm…no, if he gives you nothing, there’s no story, Tim.

Given that the news no longer distances itself from the larger network’s business of selling advertising and thus, specializes in hype to draw viewers in, I can’t blame Garrett for saying nothing.

In fact, I kind of like it….

Yeah

I much prefer this over Rex Ryan and his crazy pronouncements.

+1

but i never been a fan of any of the Ryans

Yeah, 99% of these questions he's asked

fall firmly under the, “Why the hell would I answer that?” category. Let’s see—I can try to think of the one thing that might make my boss unhappy. Or I can put down players who may (until I find decent replacements) be on my squad and in my huddles. Or I can give opposing coaches reason to feel confident about playing us. Yeah, those sound like great ideas.

Anybody with half a brain would obfuscate.

I agree

but I’m not sure why you had to bring Eagles fans into this….

They upgraded to half a brain?
True dat

It’s safer to be a boring interview or a boring press conference.

you know

I am fine with Garrett5000 being a robot
he understands that he represents something bigger than himself and every question he answers he thinks about what he says

it may be discouraging as a fan, but the professional in me appreciates Garrett being a robot

absolutely agree

and its funny others think hes a robot as well

I think he is a robot

but I respect that

I don't need my head coach to be entertaining

I don’t want my head coach to be a clown that shows up for my amusement every press conference.

I want him to lead the team to victories.

but he's not a robot in the locker room

From what I hear from the 90s guys, he has a lot of personality, and is both fun to be around and will chew your a$$ out when necessary. I’d bet his players appreciate that he doesn’t dress them down in front of the media.

to me thats huge, as a foreman in the plumbing field i never talk down to someone in front of others

just like after the coaches mainly JG screwed up and “iced” Bailey and alot of people were bashing JG, i said he probably accepted the responsibility in front of the team and doesnt need to in front of reporters.

i love JG and IMO think he has Dallas going in the right direction.

Garrett was a hero as a backup QB in Dallas imo

i have little doubt Garrett cant get this team/organization turned around unless Jerry gets involved

We are rather fond of more cybernetic types around here.
jerry an garrett are like peter and brian

except garrett is not a dog and jerry is thin

the problem with garrett is he's not a natural

all these things have been learned and i love it but the effect isn’t the same, he’s a geek tryng to be a bully

Like most of the Cowboys’ defenders, linebacker Bradie James didn’t know much about Jason Garrett before he replaced Wade Phillips. But after playing four games for Garrett, James sounds very much like a man who wants to play for the Princeton grad for years to come. “That fire – you are born with it,” James said of Garrett. “He’s got that fire in the belly. He motivates you, man. I’ll be honest with you, he really does. He gives you something to think about, and guys respond.”

There’s several quotes from players like this about Garrett. The players certainly feel he’s a natural leader and they seem to be the ones best suited to make that judgement.

still they didn't came out inspired in clutch times

i doub it but i hope it’s true

I would say that their failures at "clutch times" is a product of not being talented enough...

rather than some sort of failure of Garrett’s leadership. These clutch failures on O and D have been apparent through the coaching tenures of Parcells, Payton, Sparano, Haley, Philips and now Garrett. I say it’s a lack of talent rather than a lack of leadership.

Case in point;

Terence Newman: "Jason Garrett just gave the greatest speech i’ve heard in all my years playing football."

Then Newman played a bad game. It wasn’t a lack of leadership, after all he just said Garrett gave the greatest pre-game speech he’s ever heard, it was simply because Terence is just not good enough anymore.

it's a lack of mental toughness as well

but let’s stop here, i actually want to believe all this about garrett is true but i’m being cautious

i dont understand your geek & bully comment?

just because people goto ivy league schools there all geeks? Garrett played in the NFL & at one of toughest positions before all the rule changes lol.

well he's a cat tryng to be a dog, happy?
Go ahead and keep talking

and saying nothing.

Thats actually very funny you wrote about this.

I work with this guy who absolutely should be Jerry and Jason’s kid. It amazing that he never shuts up but has yet the 4 years I’ve worked with him.said anything at all. When the other engineers come down on bigger projects he usually gives the briefing and I get such a kick out of watching those guys flip through the prints scratch there heads whisper just confused as hell. You just learn to pick parts out of it based on body language and volume of his voice and price it all together. It actually becomes second nature after awhile. He does remind me of Jerry alot. The few times I saw Jerry and listened to him speak he does it too. He changes his tone depending on the relevance of what he is saying. Makes the cowboys interesting I think.

I wonder how you price things together.
I love Garrett speak

Instead of simply saying no comment, he’ll answer the question with a straight faced non substantive remark.

He often grins a whole lot while doing it.

It was obvious very early on that Garrett is just goofing in those press conferences. Rather than acting a clown goofing like a Rex Ryan, for Garrett it’s an intellectual goof. He just talks around the question calmly and seriously all the while grinning because it’s obvious he’s just obfuscating. Daily press conferences are stupid and he treats them as such. He’s not even that subtle about it while he’s doing it and in fact now just outright states he’s not going to say anything interesting ever! Hahaha.

I actually think Garrett is quite the funny guy.

Agreed

As soon as he grins, that’s when you know he’s going to sidestep the question.

it's an intellectual goof----that's one of the best descriptions I've heard about JG's press

conferences

Someone needs to get this memo to Hatcher.

At first I thought Garrett was speaking candidly, but with time he has become quite polished at offering little usable information. Pretty soon he’ll be speaking exclusively in acronyms, which we’ll need a key to decipher.

Do any of the

Cowboys beat writers or radio personalities ever come on here?

doubt it

but Dan Graziano mentions BTB a lot on his ESPN blog

And it is a thrill to get mentioned, I can tell you.
The media deserves nothing

and no coach has any responsibility at all to be entertaining or anything else.

If I was in his shoes I would not even say anything above Yes or NO or Maybe. I would see to it they got NOTHING at all. I loved BP’s Pressers since he was always playing with the mediots and whipping their butts the whole time. But like great comedians, top coaches that can do that are few and far between. If you cannot do that, then what Red Ball does is the next best thing.

Yeah, I would just tell them

it’s none of their business. Jason’s way takes more brains. More power to him.

He deserves a little hate, 1 playoff win in 15 years. Ultimately,

he’s the CEO, the buck stops with him. The 2009 draft was an absolute joke. What scout had enough clout could say to him, yeah, draft Brewster he’s an athlete. Anyone, with an average eye could see this guy was LUMPY.

He does offer up his opinion and honest responses now and then.

“Growing pains”, “nature of the position”, “didn’t want to chance having a negative play”. People ignore them because he doesn’t come out and directly be negative towards players. “The offensive line is not ready to play good enough”. “Brees, Staubach, Rivers, Marino, Manning, etc all sucked once and awhile too.” “Their defensive front was manhandling our inexperienced and incapable line the whole game”. Fans and media say “he sucks”, JG says “he hasn’t progressed enough”. Garret doesn’t often say anything, but when he does, don’t be fooled by his calm demeanor and ignore what he said.

I love Garrett's press conferences

“It’s a process; we need to improve in all three phases of the game.” Love it. It’s so vague and as someone mentioned earlier, it’s an “intellectual goof” for him; he knows it’s meaningless and nothing good comes out of revealing your hand. I always hated Wade’s conferences; he appeared so melancholy and had that “ah, shucks” attitude.

Garrett is extremely well organized in his thoughts

and extremely careful with his words. It’s not that he doesn’t reveal any information, it’s just that he only reveals what he wants to. Some interesting things can come out of his pressers. Usually it’s just the basic facts that he wants to impart, occasionally it’s something larger and newsworthy, but only what he intentionally wants to share.

But then he wraps that information up in all this careful phrasing which is more about imparting a tone and an attitude. That is important, though. The tone he conveys is one of being in control, being organized, being confident, being aware, being positive, learning and improving, and he chooses his language very carefully to reflect that. We’re eager, not anxious. We have challenges and opportunities, not problems and obstacles. It’s about the process and how you approach the work each day. Blah blah blah. But that stuff is all true, too, and even though he repeats it ad nauseum, it is setting the tone for the whole organization, in a way that is much more conducive to success I believe than Wade ever could be.

jason bilachek

I love the the fact we have a coach like jimmy johnson and bill up there in new england. and jerry is doing probably what any of us would do if we owned the team

Us oldtimers can remember that Landry spoke much the same way to the press
It was a different world when Landry was HC.

No internet, the beat reporters were friendly with the players and coaching staff and for the most pros at their jobs, except Skip Bayless. Bayless was lying POS. Now anyone can have a website or a blog and write any kind of trash they please.

thats very true in todays media but imo Landry would still come off the same way.

over the years i’ve heard Landry speak many times & while the sample size seems small in todays media i doubt it would have changed much.

I agree with most of it

Like, Jason does let Jerry speak even if Jerry says nothing of value. Jason knows Jerry won’t give away secret injury information, which I think is the most important kind of secret.

This part goes to far, because it would ruin the quality of trust between Jerry and Jason, who have to be friends as well as coworkers

I even have to wonder if maybe he might drop some deliberate bits of misdirection on Jerry, just to get some disinformation going about the team?

Yeah, maybe a bad thought there.

But I wonder if Jerry would go along with some bait and switch? Sorry, I just have a devious side.

Dale Hanson is an asshole.

There was a time when I liked Hanson, but since Jerry fired him from the broadcast booth he’s had a hard on for everything Cowboy. He so full of himself, it make me want to puke.

Dallas fans should be happy Garrett is the head coach now.

i cant complain about anything to do with Garrett so far unless fans are still stuck on the timeout right before the FG, which i’d like to see the stats on icing the kicker & if it really works.
i’m very critical at times of cerain players but i’ve been like that since 1973 & yes i even given Starbauch & Aikman a piece of mind before in the past. the Jackie Smith dropped pass was my worst moment in Cowboys history & i dont ever look forward to seeing that one topped

I wonder if Jackie Smith and Bill Buckner ever got together over a beer?
