"Cowboys Front Seven Can Win A Super Bowl" - Mike Mayock Conference Call Pt II

DeMarcus Ware and Sean Lee, key players in the Cowboys' front seven.

Yesterday we ran an article with a partial transcript of Mike Mayock's pre-Combine conference call. The transcript was hastily thrown together based on an audio file which recorded the first 45 minutes of the call.

Today, the NFL Network released a full transcript of the call, and Mayock went on to touch on a number of topics and prospects that have received a lot of airtime among Cowboys fans.

Mayock talks about the Cowboys "Super Bowl front seven" and how the secondary has been holding the team back. He talks about how David DeCastro will be plug-and-play from day one, he examines the pass rushers in this year's draft in a lot of detail and talks about the impact arrests and injuries have on the draft stock of players like Dre Kirkpatrick and Mark Barron.

The transcript is provided by the NFL Network, we have simply grouped some of the Q&As that deal with prospects the Cowboys could be interested in.

Star-divide

Q. Is DeCastro a better prospect than OTs Martin and Adams?

MIKE MAYOCK: I think DeCastro's pretty sure. You can plug him in and play him day one. I think Adams is a little bit iffy just because of his past. I think Jonathan Martin's a pretty solid left tackle prospect.

Q. Does Defensive End have good depth in the second round?

MIKE MAYOCK: I like Vinny Curry from Marshall. I like him a lot. Maybe Chandler Jones from Syracuse. There is a guy from Virginia in Cam Johnson that is a talented guy, but did not play well as a senior. I'm not a big fan of this year's four-three guys.

Q. The Cowboys went with a safe solid pick in the first round last year with Tyron Smith. Do you see them doing the same this year with DeCastro, or would they be better off targeting secondary help?

MIKE MAYOCK: I've been a big believer that the secondary is what's kept them out of any potential Super Bowls the last eight or ten years, whether it was safety or corner, I think they need to upgrade back there.

For me, it could be either one of those positions. They've got some former high round picks back there. One corner is getting back up there in age. The safety position has been the single -- if you look at their front seven, it's a Super Bowl defense. That's the way to put it. Their front seven to me can win a Super Bowl. Their back end can't hold up. So for me, you've got to have help on the back end.

I think they have to continue to get younger and more athletic on the offensive line, and they started it last year. Not only did they have Tyron Smith, but they had that seventh round kid Nagy from Wisconsin who started until he got hurt. They had the free agent center. So they're getting younger and more athletic. But they have to continue the process.

Q. Can you compare and contrast Courtney Upshaw and Melvin Ingram? They seem to be somewhat similar body types, but you've got them at two different positions in your rankings. Maybe explain why and what might be different about those guys even though eyeballwise, they kind of look built similarly.

MIKE MAYOCK: That's a really good question. Courtney Upshaw for me might end up at that defensive position before this thing's over with. If you look at their height and weight, they're almost identical. One was 272, one was 274, and the height was within a quarter of an inch.

They are different body types, believe it or not. From the waist down, Upshaw's bigger. He's more of a defensive end from the waist down thank Ingram is. Even though I've got them listed opposite. I'll tell why in a minute. I think ultimately, Upshaw might be a better fit as a four-three defensive end, even though at Alabama he played that 34 rush linebacker position.

Now the reason I still have him at linebacker is that is the position he played and where a lot of teams are grading him right now.

But when you watch Alabama tape in their base defense, he's a 34 linebacker. When they're in the sub-package, he's a hand in the dirt four-three guy. So I think it helps the entire league to evaluate him. From my perspective, Upshaw might be better as a four-three end, and I'm probably going to move him there at some point.

Ingram to me is a little different. He's not as big downstairs. He doesn't have quite the big butt and size as Upshaw does. But I like his movement skills better. I think can you move him around more. If you watch what they did with him at South Carolina, he showed up at nose tackle. He stood up at outside linebacker, stood up at inside linebacker. That's a long way of saying he reminds me of Justin Tuck.

He can do those things. He's got natural pass rush ability, athletic, and can move him around. He's shown he has the aptitude to learn all those different positions. Even though they're almost identically on paper, there are some differences in their game.

Q. You have Ingram higher then?

MIKE MAYOCK: No, actually, I've got Upshaw as the number one linebacker, and I've got Ingram as the number one defensive end.

Related: Mike Mayock's Updated Top 5 Players Per Position

Q. Overall though, who is higher? Overall who is higher on your board?

MIKE MAYOCK: I don't have a board yet. I don't ever do a board prior to the combine and the pro days.

Q. You mentioned earlier Vinny Curry out of Marshall looking like a second round pick. Can you evaluate his game? Can the combine potentially bump him up in that first round?

MIKE MAYOCK: I thought The Senior Bowl helped him more than the Combine will. That is because I admire his game. I admire what this kid is. What that is he's a lunch pail guy that works his tail off. He's got some talent, but he's supremely twisted and gets the most out of what he is. He's got natural pass-rush abilities and toughness.

When you combine those things, you can be a productive, good, NFL player. Can he help himself at the Combine? I'm not sure what he's going to run or what any of his numbers are going to be.

I know he's gotten himself into that late first to mid second consideration because of what he did at The Senior Bowl. Now he's got to continue the process, run well, do well in the meetings, present yourself well, work, and that's what this kid is. People are going to like him because he works so hard.

Q. Do you see him going to an outside linebacker in a three-four situation?

MIKE MAYOCK: I don't know if he's athletic enough to stand up and drop and do all those things. I'm anxious to see what his height, width, and arm length are. I've got that all from The Senior Bowl obviously. Will have him do with the conversion guys, all the defensive end that's will stand up and do linebacker drills.

I'm anxious to see him do those drills. I'm just not sure he's going to be as good at that as he is at rushing the quarterback.

Q. Want to ask you about a couple Alabama guys as well. Does the injury to Josh Chapman or Mark Barron or the recent arrest to Dre Kirkpatrick, does that hurt their draft stock at all?

MIKE MAYOCK: You've probably heard me say a lot of times that this thing is a process. We in the media all of us tend to have knee-jerk reactions to things and I think the NFL let it play out a little bit more.

So if you take those situations one at a time, Dre' or Kirkpatrick, the knee-jerk reaction is, oh, my goodness. Drug arrest, blah, blah, blah. Well, that didn't turn out to be too much. I don't think in the world of the NFL -- are they going to do their homework? Absolutely. Is it a minor red flag? You bet it is, and they're going to do their homework.

But I don't think on its face, if there's nothing beyond that, I don't think it's going to hurt them at all.

As far as Barron the safety, I would have loved to have seen him workout. But his body of work on tape is very strong. He's the number one safety on just about everybody's charts. Everybody's hoping that he'll have an opportunity to work out prior to the draft.

But you can go back to the tight end the Pittsburgh Steelers took out of Virginia, Heath Miller, who had the hernia surgery and was never able to work out. And the Pittsburgh Steelers got a great bargain for him at the end of the first round. I think Mark Barron's going to be fine because his body of work speaks for itself.

Now we all want to see him work out, but I think his tape is really good. Now the defensive tackle, the Chapman kid is what he is. He's a strong, tough, defensive lineman. The combine wasn't going to do a whole lot for him anyway.

Many laughed at Jerry

When he said at the senior bowl that the D-Line was a strength. It appears that the well-respected Mayock shares this view.

I think we're a really good DE away from having a top tier front 7

but Mayock is right, our secondary is just horrid. It needs at least two new starters at the very least.

I agree.

That is the problem with what Jerry said. He used the word ‘strength’. The front 7 is in better shape than the secondary, but we need a DE, like you said, before we can call it a strength compared to the rest of the league.

No. We need a NT!

We need a big strong body that can occupy 2 blockers and stuff the run. That would move Rat to DE and kill three birds with one stone; DE, NT, and the LOLB could get to the QB! Ware gets their because he is a Monster! If we grabbed a true NT both Rat and Spencer’s sack totals would go up. Teams would be forced to put the RT on Rat which would leave Spencer on a RB or TE.

RT- G-C G LT
AA-Rat- NT -Hatch-Ware

Someone’s getting to the QB!

I seriously agree with both!

On draft day a NT is going to go second to the sexier pick of the DE, but I think we need both. Yes to the Cornerback and Safety but I am hoping we do something about Cb in Free Agency.

+1

I want Paul Solai. We get him and move Rat to DE…some serious wreckage forthcoming!

+1

Paul Solai is a must sign for the reasons mtibus, mho. and livendieblue have stated.

Imgine if we had someone other than Ware that can cosistantly get to the QB?
I like the idea of a DE...

But we already have one. And a very good one.

I’d like you to meet Mr. DWare. Dumdumdum…

Ryan runs a 3-4 w/the strong OLB sticking his hand in the dirt to emulate a 4-3 pretty frequently.

What we need is a NT(big guy) and a CB. Thats it.

Rat moves to weak DE opposite Ware, Carter slides outside in 4-3 situations(possibly putting that punt blocking skill to use on QBs. But, primarily for coverage and outside play run-down speed behind Ware), and Lissy/Hatcher/Spears man the DE in front of Ware or move in yo DT next to our new NT in 4-3 situations.

This one signing negates at least 3 worries.

-need for a NT
-need for a DE
-need for Spencer to rush the QB any more than he does now.

The D line isnt a weakness

It jus could use some upgrading. That can be had within ie Lissy more snaps than Coleman, bumping Ratliff to DE. And in the draft with a mid round NT. IMO It’s behind OLB, CB, S, OL.

Put it his way if we kick Ratliff to DE add a stuffer or even Lissy at NT and that’s all we did at DL I wouldn’t be upset.

Ratliff, Lissy Hatcher, Spears, Coleman, Geathers (look for him to contribute) is far from a bad rotation.

Agreed Terry the secondary

Talent wise is lacking ALOT. I’m high on Jenkins but that’s it. Obviously Scandrick isn’t going anywhere but I don’t mind him as the slot guy

our safety play has held this team back for a very long time

Pretty much ever since Woodson retired, we haven’t had any quality safeties to speak of.

The one area Jerry thinks he can just get by

He’s so blind… He’s seem guys like Rolle, Landry, Dawkins, Phillips, Taylor all come through the division yet he gets guys like Hamlin, Sensa, Ball, Roy, Elam smh

I agree, but I don't think it's so cut and dry

You included Roy, which is unfair, because he was 8th overall in the draft and had a few very good seasons. There were some years where he was the envy of most of the NFC. So you can use that as a counter argument against your point.

Also, with the other guys we’ve been up against the wall a bit with having to pay guys like Romo, Austin, Ware, etc. and unfortunately safety has been on the back burner. Was that the right call? I think probably not, but at the same time most of those guys you named that play for other teams were either overhyped or overpaid for, except for Dawkins.

We haven’t really been in the position to take a good safety high in the draft for a few years. Where we’ve really fallen short I think, is DEVELOPING safeties. and corners for that matter. Other than Scandrick we haven’t gotten a lot out of our own guys.

Really?

Landry say what you will is better than any safety we’ve had since Roys good days. Rolle is part of a super bowl defense and was never really a weakness on the defense has been very solid since they signed him. Again I would take him over our safeties. Dawkins speaks for itself. Kenny Phillips is better than our safetys I would take him all day. And Sean Taylor over hyped? Your kidding right, he would have been the games most dominant safety today. RIP

I’ll give you Roy but that was with Darren Woodson as his running mate. Check him out post Woodson

I love Mike Jenkins

but if I wanted Kenny Phillips
too bad we didnt draft Phillips AND Jenkins instead of Felix and Jenkins

First

you said Jerry thinks he can “Get by” on X players. I’m saying you don’t “Get by” on an 8th overall pick. He drafted to get a game changer.

Second, I think Rolle was overpaid for because the Giants already knew what they had in their defensive front and it was a luxury they could afford. I don’t think he’s a game changing safety but he’s paid like it because teams aren’t letting their safeties walk these days.

Landry is pretty good, but if we had him he’s be in the doghouse with his injuries. Grass is always greener.

Sean Taylor was overhyped. He just was. When he played for the Skins and he never bothered me as a defender.

Lol

I can’t believe you believe Sean Taylor was over hyped… To each its own, I digress after that

He was good

but a top-5 overall pick who still had flaws in his game. And it’s not like our scrub team couldn’t move the ball on him back in the day.

Not saying he couldn’t have improved and been an all-time great, but when he played against us, I thought he was just a good player.

I still don't understand us passing on Rolle

to be fair about Landry, the Cowboys actually really liked him in the draft that year, but he was a top 10 pick

Jerry just doesnt put a premium on safety

I’m afraid he’s gonna do the same this year. I know we have alot of holes to fill but if safety isn’t one of them via FA im almost for trading back into either round 1 or high round 2 to grab Mark Barron. We can’t keep ignoring the position.

thats the problem

for whatever reason, they just don’t value that position

I think he's scared of overpaying for the position
Scared money dont make no money
He makes money.
Lol you know what i mean.

If not its a metaphor meaning playing scared won’t get you anywhere. But the extreme is Dan Snyder. So he has to find middle ground

yup

I agree with Mayock, if this secondary was any good, we would be a contender

There is still that Offensive Line!
he's right

The D line and LB’s did enough to keep us in winning situations. There’s nothing they can do about a secondary that avoids contact and can’t cover.

Our secondary has to be able to cover for a few seconds

they’re incapable of doing that with the talent we have currently.

It was worse than that

at times. Sometimes they couldn’t even cover that long.

which is truly pathetic
embarrassing
but if we had an excellent d line

it would cover for our horrid secondary.

if you dont have a horrid secondary in the first place

You don’t have to cover for anything. C’mon?

i laugh at both
cowboys front office has gone cheap on the d-line for awhile now.

The giants have a great d-line, not sure’s ours is even close to that level.

Outside of Canty

Their big 4 were drafted and contributed early. Really nothing to do with money just good scouting. JPP, TUCK, OSI, KIWANUKA

They run a different defense

DL is always the strength of a 4-3 defense, LBs are the heart and soul of any 3-4 defense.

Agree

although it won’t hurt to have disruptive D-linemen.

Hatcher,Lissy

And Geathers, yes Geathers I think will make huge strides Lissy especially. I don’t see a need to draft a DE in the first 2 maybe 3 rounds definitely if Ratliff is bumped out

It isn't exactly a "need"

but we could use an upgrade at DE to make our defense better.

Ware accounted for almost half of Cowboys sack totals

Ware-19.5, rest of team-22.5, either way you look at it, the other OLB’s and the defensive front is not getting to the QB. Jerry has not taken a pass rusher in the first round since 05 (Parcells). he just doesnt prioritize the position

not true, Spencer was drafted in 07
After a moveup, no less

terrible decision.

thats where its important to be able to evaluate talent effectively for the D

in the draft, and we havent really been able to do that since Parcells. nothing is a sure thing, but you want to be hitting more than you’re missing

I do have high hopes for Carter though
Parcells wasn't that great

He drafted Spears and Carpenter with premium picks and they’re complete JAGs.

We’ve evaluated talent pretty decently since he left too. It’s just that one draft really messed everything up.

exactly

We did get Lee, Butler, Lissy, Jenkins, Scandrick.

Lee I love, Butler Lissy we'll see, Jenkins hot or cold,

Scan will hopefully live up to his contract. my main point is that we still need to get a pass rush going and we havent had a “HIT” since 05, cause God forbid if Ware was ever hurt, we wouldnt get to the QB much at all

And even though Spencer isn't great

He’s about 10 times better of a pick than Carpenter.

And we’ll see about Carter and guys like Church and Brent. Could turn into something.

"We’ve evaluated talent pretty decently since he left too."

2 words-Roy Williams

that's a different scouting dept.

And it was mostly a F.O. problem.

Every team makes mistakes.

and really Carpenter was drafted as a passing OLB as well in 06
your're right I should have added "quality" to the post

my initial findings were looking at the D-line, which Spears was the last D-lineman taken in the first round in 2005

and it still doesnt change the fact that no one else is getting to the QB

with Spencer having the next highest sack total at 6 and he may or may not be around next year, so if he leaves, we need someone else to step up

I see the difference being leadership. I think we have some talent but you get guys speaking out over there.

Dallas Cowboys DE Jason Hatcher said he is not sure who the leaders are on the team and believes that the team needs to find a leader this offseason. Hatcher said the team has all the talent to win but needs a leader to get behind

Read more: http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl?PHPSESSID=52560acc6bec7b1987e05412be4d023d#ixzz1mfpeyHNB

Sean Lee needs to step it up and be the leader...

A linebacker usually takes the role, and he is the only one who can back up the talk with his performance.

I think he will be the leader

with james and brooking there, he couldnt step up and take that role yet
with them out of the way, he will
I guarantee it

I also think this is moot

the real problems in Dallas start at Corner Back, not a lack of reading Sun Tzu

Dallas needs 4 new starters, a #1 CB, safety, center and OG.

Sign Spencer, find 2 starter in the draft and sign 2 FAs who can play. Doesn’t seem that hard, but it is.

They need to upgrade the DE position as well
Hopefully some of the younger guys will step up and get the job done.
sounds good to me

Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

What about center?
It was the weakest link last year.
I saw a couple mentions of Kowalski and Costa

But, man. Costa’s snaps looked stupid too often last year.

Peter Konz

Second round. Problem dived for the next ten years

*problem solved
Konz has medical issues

blood clot problem that could come back and with our luck would if we pick him

I don't think Konz will fall

But, Norm Hitzges loves the pick. I think I would too.

just some tweeks

I think Rat, Hatcher, and Lissy should rotate at ends and get a big body nt like Poe. Brent is prolly ready to take over nt. Get a situational pass rusher like SF does with Aldon Smith opposite Ware and our front seven will be awesome. Let’s draft Jenkins or kirkpatrick and let’s kick some tail.

We got Butler

who I still think should get a shot at OLB instead of signing Spencer for $8.8 million.

He's a spot player, not a starter IMO.
He should get a chance

look at Austin, he blew up when he got his first start and that was only due to injury. I’m not saying I expect him to do what Austin did but let him start a few games so we know for sure what he’s capable of.

We still need another OLB for the depth chart
True

If we let Spencer go we’d definitely need to draft another OLB early.

I'd rather see who is out there on the FA market first

and maybe take another borderline project player at OLB to battle Albright.

I’m assuming that we’re not going to get good value on pass rushers early in the draft because the numbers aren’t there. We’d be best served going with offensive line, secondary and D-Line.

I haven't heard much about OLB options

not sure who’d be available to battle Albright.

Well, I meant hopefully we find a veteran in free agency

and take an OLB prospect in round 4 or later to battle Albright.

I want that kid from Troy!
I think he'll rise

Do you want him in the first three rounds?

Massaquoi, I like him a lot
Bob Sturm is big on franchise tagging Spencer

The numbers he brought up to support that idea were very convincing. Look at his solo tackles. I would like to see Butler or Albright as a starter though

need better rush from OLB not named Ware

Spencer is not worth $8.8 million

I got 99 problems and Spencer is 8.8 million of them
don't need much time

As a QB in the nfl if all you have to do is throw the ball in the air and you know you’re guys comin down with it. How do bottom of the barrel QB’s like Grossman//Kolb/T.Jackson just to name a few, struggle against the rest of the league but when they play us they look like pro bowlers? That’s not our D line’s problem. Pretty obvious where we need the most help

Our secondary couldn't cover a corps that's why

Just carpet bomb the position and start over. I’d rather watch a bunch of young guys struggle early in the season and come on strong as opposed to watching our defense play hide the secondary only to have that scheme blow up in our faces by mid season.

What do you mean "carpet bomb"?
kinda like last year

use 3 picks on the O-line. only use it for CB instead this year.

I mean by the start of 2013 season

the only familiar name out there better be Mike Jenkins. It needs to be Jenkins, a few young guys, maybe 2012 FA at CB and two new safeties. Thats what I mean. Just blow it up.

What about Scandrick?

Can we cut him in the next year with that contract he signed?

Orlando's not goin anywhere

Tho sometimes I wish he would

Scandrick's not horrible

He made a few mistakes but looked exceptional at times. Had a smackdown game against New England. Definetly a plus in the nickel…

i wouldn't call Scandrick a plus in the slot

when Jenkins & Newman were playing at a probowl level a couple years ago offenses would burn Scandrick in the slot a lot.
Scandrick has zero ballskills & while he has speed it always seems he’s a step behind the defender. its like he doesn’t have that extra gear to close on the WR when the ball is in the air.

he wasn't burned deep

and he was just a 2nd year guy then

There was a post around draft time last year I think. Showing how the Boys tend to "carpet bomb" a position.

If we really need players at a spot they draft multi players for it. Like Cali said, 3 OL last year. I am hoping they do the same for the secondary this year.
It is a deep draft for CB’s, I am hoping we pick up at least 2 and a mid/late round S type.

yep
Gotta Pick

DeCastro if he is there; go get some dbacks in free agency and in the middle rounds.

They say its a deep draft for corner back.

Man, I’ll be kind of pissed if they pass on DeCastro. My dream is DeCastro in the 1st and Barron in the 2nd.

dream is right

but I would love that as well

we can move up to the 28 or 29 spot if we sacrifice the 3rd.

he might be there but then we probably miss out on a guard or CB in the 3rd

That's why I'm not so sure we need to pick a CB in the first round

unless the scouts just love one of the CBs that won’t make it to the second round. If we pulled DeCastro, I’d be thrilled. Imagine if we also picked up Nicks. We’d hopefully be set for 10 years on the o-line.

Well, there goes the Upshaw pick some people wanted

Too bad, I would’ve loved watching people claim he’s better than Spencer, only to find out later on, he’s exactly like him.

From now on anytime someone describes a 34 OLB as “great against the run, good against the pass” my response is going to Spencer!

Got a defender who's a great run stopper but can't rush the passer?

To paraphrase Bryan Burke:

Trade him to some sucker team that cares that they only give up 3.8 yards per carry rather than 4.2 yards per carry. In the mean time, the perennial playoff contenders are built around passing the ball and rushing the passer.

yup
Anthony Spencer

Is the Roy E. Williams & MartyB of Pass Rushers…

1) Roy and Marty’s best attributes are not what the team acquired them for: they brought in to make big plays and keep the chances moving when their number was called in the passing game. Instead, they’re best known for almost catching the ball and being great blockers.

2) Anthony Spencer was acquired to get after the QB. His best attribute is “setting the edge” and playing good run defense. However on passing situations, he almost gets to the QB.

Getting to the QB...

Almost isn’t good enough in my book. Outside backers in the 3-4 need to get to the QB. The inside guys fill the gaps and attack the run. Signing Spencer at 8.8 mil is not an option. He’s simply not worth it. A good player but not 8.8 mil good.

Butler and Carter

Butler has the speed and intensity to be an effective rusher but doesn’t seem to have the discipline to excel at anything else. Too many penalties and lapses in judgement for my taste. In limited snaps he makes big plays and big mistakes.

Carter just didn’t get enough playing time for me to say anything about him. Hopefully he’s another Sean Lee waiting to explode. That would make me smile…

we should trade Spencer to the Jets then
Why isn't this green?
Mayock and his sexual innuendos...

Ingram to me is a little different. He’s not as big downstairs. He doesn’t have quite the big butt and size as Upshaw does.

We cannot win a Superbowl

with our front seven.

We could with a much better secondary that can cover
Another Pass rusher wouldn't hurt either
We can't pay Spencer 8-9 mil,

But if he’ll sign for less, I’m ok with that. We need someone at his position whether he’s resigned or not. I’d leave it up to RR and SJ on this one.

DeCastro is the guy if he’s there. Protecting Romo is essential for our chances.

We must address the secondary but there is good value after the first.

If DeCastro and Coples are gone, draft Ingram, Perry, Jenkins , Upshaw, Dre, whoever is rated BPA. If Barron slides due to injury try to get him in round 2.

Agreed with pretty much all that you said

except Coples, I’m still not convinced he’d be a great fit in a 3-4.

He's one guy

that I don’t think we need to worry about being there at 14. He won’t.

lol

I don’t he’ll be there either so its moot.

DeCastro is the man

he will directly lead to points in terms of improving the Rushing and Passing game and he will help keep our defense off the field. all of our problems wont be fixed with 1 draft/FA (all teams have holes), but it seems that we can have an elite offense with a few pickups to make a great O-line

If Upshaw is BPA at 14, I'm drafting Barron
at 14 you can't draft Barron over Jenkins or Kirpatrick

maybe if they trade down or Barron makes huges strides with his injury by the draft. the Drs would need to guarentee he’d be available day 1 of TC.

He will be. Normal recovery time is 4-6 weeks. Occasionally it goes to 8 weeks. Not 6 months.
Of Upshaw is BPA

I assume Kirk, Jenk, DeCastro, and Ingram are gone.

Im wondering if the team may not consider DL/LB a NEED.

Not that they wouldnt take a stud DE, NT, or LB if talent and value intersected at the draft. But maybe the team feels better about Lissemore, Brent, Callaway, and a slimmed down Hatcher than we do. Maybe they really are going to move Ratliff outside. Maybe they have Bruce Carter penciled into the starting lineup, leaving the only big question being Spencer and the SOLB spot.

Its so hard to judge this front 7 with such a terrible secondary behind it. Im sure our DB’s handcuffed Rob Ryan quite a bit.

Adding a couple of talented guys to the secondary, and getting Mike Jenkins healthy would go a long way towards improving the defense. Id still like to see us add one more pass rusher to the mix. Even if he’s not an every-down player.

I'm pretty sure you're close to the truth with this

I bet they feel that way.

Also, any reasonable team would take front 7 help if talent and value intersected. So I hope we’re reasonable.

most defenses have weak spots & soon as they fix the backend the runs going to kill us lol
is anyone else getting tired of meaningless speculation?

5 more days til NFL combine and something actually happening

honestly

I am really not pumped about the combine
I am really just looking forward to watching the pass rushers and cornerbacks work out, that’s about it
for me, game tape outweighs the combine

+1 on game tape

the combine is where scouts get excited & move guys up the board soley bc of measurables. i can see how a 40 time could help a WR but still he doesnt have the pads on & running routes against NFL calibur CBs.

I'd much rather have a WR who ran great routes

than one who ran a 4.2

give me

the 4.4 guy who runs great routes over the 4.2 guy who can’t run routes

I still prefer game tape

but sometimes guys do impress me at the combine, but primarily I like game tape
I do like the cone drills and vertical jump for defensive players though

yeah, the underwear olympics really don't tell you much

Game tape is the best evaluation

I agree Terry

I trust game tape/production and my eyes over a bunch of sometimes meaningless tests
like 40 time for a DL is really meaningless, but the vertical jump and 10-20 yard dash splits are

+1

i like Mayock but saying Dallas has a front 7 that can get to the super bowl is like saying A.Smith is a super bowl calibur QB. its nothing but a guess & they have zero clue whos going to get better over the offseason or whos going to regress

What else are we going to do in the meantime?
What I would like to see on draft day ...

- I would like to see the cowboys draft DeCastro at 14, if he’s available (and he probably will be).

- I would also like to see them trade up into the later part of the first round if one of the top 3 corners or Mark Barron is still around.

I am kinda hoping for that myself if we take DeCastro or a pass rusher at 14

move up to grab a CB
if one falls, I would jump on it
teams picking late love trading out of the first round, especially the patriots, but just be careful trading with them, I remember trading up for Dez and they had a video of the Pats war room and Bellicheck says okay to the original deal, but then is like, “see if we can get another pick” and he did, very smooth business man

Trading into the later part of the first round is usually very tricky ...

You almost always have to overpay in terms of picks … But if a guy like Kirkpatrick (unlikely), Jenkins or Barron is still around it’s worth it. Any one of these guys is an instant upgrade to our secondary.

I myself hope we do quite a bit of trading in the first couple rounds.

I love DeCastro, but if I were the GM I’d trade back with say SD and grab Konz. I think C is a bigger need and more important OL position anyway. Plus Konz could be a day one starter at G too. That kind of flexibility is very valuable. Then with the new second we would get trade back into the first to grab Barron or a falling CB. I would then take Kelechi Osemele in the second again very good flexibility G/T. In the third I’d grab Massaquoi and in the fourth I would grab Iloka. I would resign Spencer and Holland

Wow I botched finishing that post before I posted it. I’d also try to trade up in the fourth to snag Trumaine Johnson and sign Routt and/or Carr.

Jerry didnt trade last year

you know he will this year

When the Patriots call offering a trade, you hang up.

Immediately.

But we did make a trade with them to land Dez
lol

we got swindled out of an extra pick in that trade
I will never forget it

LOL
Ingram to me is a little different. He’s not as big downstairs. He doesn’t have quite the big butt and size as Upshaw does

Mayock LIKES BIG BUTT"S AND HE CANNOT LIE

But I like his movement skills better. I think can you move him around more. If you watch what they did with him at South Carolina, he showed up at nose tackle. He stood up at outside linebacker, stood up at inside linebacker. That’s a long way of saying he reminds me of Justin Tuck.

I have been saying the same thing about Ingram for months, he reminds me a lot of Justin Tuck, kudos to Mayock for seeing that as well

Jerry likes the rump of a grown man

i still remember that interview when Jerry was talking about Felix after the draft & how he had that perfect butt lol. i just shook my head

not to mention saying Aikman looked good in his underwear back in '89
how about Aikman and Erin Andrews?
really?

What’s up haven’t heard?

he said perfect butt?

LOL

that wasn't the first time i heard a comparison of Ingram & Tuck on NFL Network

i think it was C.Davis a few months ago

I said it a long time ago as well
i'm sorry I know its a bit immature

but now I picture Mayock making his board and he has a criteria just for big butt’s
hahahaha
oh Michael, you sir are a funny guy

lol
It is common for evaluators to look at their butts. Most simply call it the players "base".

WB does a lot I know.

lmfao it kinda goes to ur comparisons

on dez n what did u call it some sort of chiseled build? Haha

DeCastro is pretty sure....

I agree, Mike Mayock. DeCastro is a pretty sure thing, and you just can’t go wrong adding to a line that needs to be revamped further due to the question marks you have in Kosier, Holland, Dockery Costa, and Nagy. Kowalski played well when given the opportunities, and he can play more than one position, so he would be a good keeper for depth at the right price. DeCastro, if he is there when the Cowboys select, is who I believe the smart thing to do is to take him. Kirkpatrick sure seems to be a stud at his position as well, and if DeCastro is gone, he would be a great pick up for the secondary. Time will tell, but for me, I take DeCastro if he is there, and continue to sure up the O-line to protect Romo and get the running game going. The secondary obviously needs help, but DeCastro would be the BPA, and you work the rest of your draft after him as effectively as you can.

Interesting thought

Protecting Romo and Murray is a priority. It just seems to me upgrading the weakest part of the team—-the secondary—-should come first. If Dallas can get some DB help in FA with Finnegan or Routt, then yeah, jump all over DeCastro.

I hear ya, REAP IT

It is a bit of a catch 22 if you were to have DeCastro on the board at 14, presuming the Cowboys don’t trade up or down in the first round. The secondary is weak, no doubt, but the line is also a question mark, and if you can address the secondary via FA and in the second round and beyond, I think you go with the safe, non-sexy pick in DeCastro. You get him, and you have a piece to the line that could be an anchor for years and years to come. You do your best to build an O-line with youth and athleticism, which we all know is fundamental to football. I still think the secondary can be effectively addressed with DeCastro as the first pick. We will all see if the Jones’ and the coaches feel the same way on draft day.

With a better O-line our defense might look better

I mean imagine, if we didn’t have to watch a punt on 4 & 1 in a decisive situation. I think the offense put the defense back on the field too many times with the game on the line.

BUT, I AGREE COMPLETELY THIS SECONDARY IS GARBAGE!

Maybe they can churn the bottom of the roster and maybe find a gem in the late rounds for the secondary.

with a better defense the offense might look better
Unfortunately a better defense isn't going to help our redzone, goal to go, and 3/4 and one conversion ratios or close out a game and keep our QB safe...

Absolutely though I agree, on the defense we need DB help bad and then IMO interior pass rush.

EDIT- definitely will help us close out a game, i got overzelous.
Mario Butler

Look for him to rise on our depth chart

We can patch up the holes at CB in FA
DeCastro is probably the safest pick in the draft

its not sexy, its not going to blow people away, but he is a safe pick

Agree, the only way he's a bust is injury.

I don’t think Jerry drafts him even if he’s there at 14.

yeah

no way he busts out unless by injury

I honestly agree that S and CB are major needs

and need to be addressed in the draft

but i think i’m going to be upset if Decastro isn’t our no.1 pick… (even more upset if he’s available and isn’t our no.1 pick)

Totally

I’ll be pulling my hair out if this team passes on DeCastro.

i hope you have a wig bc i cant see Dallas investing a top 15 pick in a Guard

Jerry spent a top 10 pick & 2 others in last years draft so i doubt he keeps throwing 1st round picks on positions they can fill in rounds 3-7

No wig

I’ll just have to have some faith in a front office that traded an entire draft for Roy Williams. But, who am I kidding, the Cowboys have been breaking my heart for a while now… You’d think I was used to it.

spending a first round pick

on a guard… gives you a near definite starter at G for the next 5 season…. picking up a guard in the rounds 3-7, doesn’t

Jerry loves Romo, and has stated the interior line needs to be upgraded… i don’t see any reason why Jerry wouldn’t pull the trigger on Decastro if he were available

you build good teams with good football players

if its DeCastro they get an A+ grade on draft reviews

Yeah, they can take DeCastro and ALMOST no matter who else they pick

I’d look at this as a good draft. Obviously I intend to like and feel confident about the other picks. For instance if we drafted a bunch of back up running backs and wide receivers with the other picks I would be seriously wondering what was going on? I’d then give the draft a terrible grade, but then again… They did get DeCastro.

Yes he is but

Pending what we do in FA at OLB and G

I would be highly upset if Ingram is sitting there and we pass.

I love Ingram

you know that
i am gonna be upset as well

agreed..

I think Decastro is the safest but am really drawn to Ingram

a lot of teams will pass on the Notre Dame Safety bc he's white but that kid can play
Do you really think front offices won't draft him because of his skin color?

There’s been a few good white safeties in the past few years.

Eric Weddle comes to mind.
Weddle was one player I was hoping we'd get lasr
Jeremy Lin

was not drafted because he’s asian

Jermey Lin didn’t stick on the back of Dallas’ roster. No one thought he’d have these great games.

realize Jermey Lin has been cut by two teams. No one thought he’d do what he’s done. And I doubt he can play defense, he’d have no roll on this new, defensive era, Mavs

I doubt that

dont be bitter that MY Knickerbockers got a steal

honestly I never knew he was white

i thought he was just light skinned
color means nothing to me man, a purple alien could play for my team I could really care less what race you are, if you can play you can play

exactly

at least Mayock is paying attention
“secondary has been holing them back for 8 or 10 years, whether it’s a safety or a cornerback”

Mayock >>>>>>>>> Kiper
I like getting the combine measurements

I might watch some 20 yard shuttles and 3 cones but otherwise my interest in the combine is looking through the numbers later.

I hate hearing people saying the combine is "worthless."

It’s not nearly as valuable as game tape. But I think it’s a good tool for weeding out the “physically unable to compete.” If you are a WR and you show up and run a 4.85, sorry but you are not an NFL player. If you are a lineman, and you show up and hit 13 reps of 225, it tells me you are too weak to play in the NFL and also that you dont take your job very seriously. Whether or not you think Bench Press is important, you’d have to be a fool to know that you are going to be judged on it, and not put in the work to improve it.

you also get guys like Ware, who get drafted at #11 because of their measurables

Yep.

Ware was probably a 2nd rounder before he set the combine on fire.

Ware was a borderline 1st rd early second round until the combine

one of the few times anyone has moved up that far because of the combine and turned out to be even better then hoped

others too

Wake had a great combine, Watt did too for a man his size. I’m becoming increasingly convinced the combine is actually a very important indicator of future play.

OCC article are QB Pressure

Curious if OCC hS written anything about year end numbers for QBDP…quarterback disruption points. He wrote a great article like 10 games into the season that showed the pass rush had started the season strong but was slowing down. Without seeing hard numbers I can go by what I remember. What I remember is the defense struggling to get to the QB late in the season. With regard to judging the DLine performance, sack numbers are deceiving because Rob Ryan blitzed players from the secondary A LOT which contributed to the pretty decent sack total.

Last 13 games Spencer got 3 sacks

pretty much says it all

YUP

but he was sure great at tackling and the run game
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!! (Geico pig voice)

did we forget what happened in 07?

We could have elite talent in every position, and Romo would still find ways to choke.

The only guys that Cowboys should consider at 14 AT THIS POINT

Are David Decastro, Melvin Ingram, and Janoris Jenkins. Let the Spencer situation and the rest of FA work itself out and then this can be revisited.

Dre Kirkpatrick could be added

But I like Jenkins better in Rob Ryans system

This is the year for a trade down
never

We can get a top 10 talent at #14 you don’t throw that away.

you got a point but the top players in this draft aren’t as special this year compared to other years.

The following are special players

Andrew Luck and RG3 are special.

yep but the talent level sort of falls off after 3.

Put me on the board of guys who will be happy if Kirkpatrick

Is the man at 14. A CB who hits like a safety, willing to tackle, and can lock down, that’s freaking special right there.

I just rewatched highlights of that Arkansas game

He was flying everywhere.
