When Bill Parcells was the Cowboys head coach, he often told the media that his job, in terms of personnel, was to have a plan for all available contingencies. He spent a great deal of his time and energy developing a plan for any possible personnel scenario that might unfold, whether it be due to injury, declining production, or contract problems. Parcells was a notorious worry-wort. I can see why; with 53 guys on a roster, there are a seemingly infinite number of permutations, many of them bad, likely to dance in a coach's head.
The Cowboys personnel guys are now in meetings, coming up with their own set of contingencies. First they must evaluate the roster, determining who needs to be replaced, who deserves a promotion to a starting or key backup role, and how best to fill the roster holes created by expired contracts, retirements, contract casualties, or other cuts. Then, In addition, they must consider which positions are underperforming and need to be upgraded. Once this has been figured out, the real work begins: what avenues can be explored to get the maximum roster improvement for the minimum expenditure?
What real work might we see? Check out some speculative thinking after the jump...

When determining this, its important to consider what might be available in the draft. Each draft has strengths at particular positions--and, for those positions, through specific rounds--and weaknesses at others. Last year, for example, the strengths were at offensive tackle (particularly in round one) and defensive end (into round two). The Cowboys apparent strategy, to select a first-round offensive lineman and a second-round defensive end, was a sound one. Sadly, the run on 5-techniques began and ended before they went on the clock in round two. Nevertheless, it made much more sense than to select a DE in the first round (it would have been J.J. Watt) and hope that a Derek Sherrod would fall into the top of the second round (he didn't, and wouldn't have).
This April, the positions of strength appear to be cornerback and interior offensive line, which works in the Cowboys favor as these are both positions that struggled mightily last season. Also good news is that good players can be found at both positions into the third and perhaps even fourth rounds, so Dallas doesn't absolutely select these positions in rounds one and two. Should a higher-rated player at another position fall to them at pick 14, they can nab him and still address needs on days two and three.
The strength of the 2012 draft class should affect Dallas' free agency plans, as it would be imprudent to pursue big-ticket free agents at positions where the draft class is bountiful, especially offensive guard, and cornerback, when the team has so many roster holes to fill. The exception: because they'll need as many as three corners, they'll probably need to pick up at least one is both free agency and in the draft, with another low-round pick or a UDFA thrown in for good measure.
With all that said, what might the plan look like? Today, I'll start with the offense; next week, I'll do the same with the defense. Let's begin by revisiting our handy-dandy positional needs chart, which appeared in part one of this series. Any roster spots that were manned last year by guys who are currently free agents (and thus not officially on the roster), I've left open (marking them with a "????"). The team only has two RFAs this offseason, Tony Fiammetta and Kevin Ogletree; I've marked both with an asterisk.
| Starter | Backup | Third String | |
|---|---|---|---|
| QB | Tony Romo | ???? | Stephen McGee |
| FB | *Tony Fiammetta | Shaun Chapas | |
| RB | DeMarco Murray | Felix Jones | Phillip Tanner |
| SE | Dez Bryant | *Kevin Ogletree | Dwayne Harris |
| FL | Miles Austin | ???? | Jesse Holley |
| TE | Jason Witten | ???? | John Phillips |
| LT | Tyron Smith | Jermey Parnell | |
| LG | Bill Nagy | ???? | David Arkin |
| OC | Phil Costa | Kevin Kowalski | |
| RG | Kyle Kosier | ???? | David Arkin |
| RT | Doug Free | Jermey Parnell |
What might we do with this information? Let's try to address this step by step, starting with what we definitely know:
1. The Cowboys aren't going to find either a backup quarterback or a third wide receiver in the draft. Romo's last two backups fit the same profile: aged former starters who had won in the league but were no longer keen on being the main man. Both were greybeards: Brad Johnson was 35 when he joined the team; Jon Kitna was 37 (but still had a live arm). Expect a player with a similar profile to back up Romo in 2012. Also, because rookie wideouts historically take 2-3 years to become acclimated to NFL offensive schemes, the third receiver will either be a free agent, or a promotion from within.
2. Although the majority of Cowboys fans will be happy to let Martellus Bennett go, the team is certain to miss his blocking. By 2011, he had developed into a third offensive tackle; in fact, the PFF folks were so impressed that he received a better overall season grade than Jason Witten. While John Phillips, two years removed from knee surgery, can certainly replace Bennett and add a dimension to the offense that 'Tellus never could (namely, as a passing threat), Bennett's departure will leave Dallas with a new problem to solve in short-yardage situations. Moreover, according to Mike Mayock, the TEs in the upcoming draft are all receiving types; there are no road graders. So, if the Cowboys want their 2nd/ 3rd tight end to be a plus blocker, he'll have to be brought aboard via free agency.
3. According to ESPN Dallas' Bryan Broaddus, who boasts all kind of contacts within the organization, the Cowboys have been prioritizing offensive center over offensive guard. When we look at the above chart, this makes good sense; not only was their center play abysmal, but there don't seem to be any young guys with significant upside on the roster. At guard, on the other hand, its much too early to end the David Arkin and Bill Nagy experiments. Sure, Nagy struggled some (in other games he was pretty good) and Arkin was inactive for all sixteen games. But both have the quick feet and nasty disposition the Cowboys want in their linemen and should reap much benefit from a full offseason with Mike Woicik. Bringing in a big-name free agent would relegate one of them to career backup, and I'm not sure the Cowboys are ready to do that, either in terms of development or expense.
Given what we know, what kind of plan might emerge? Extrapolating from the above evidence, I'd expect to see something like this:
Add a free agent quarterback: Its possible that an aging vet or two who still has a little game in him will be released in the coming month. If not, the available players who fit the Cowboys' recent backup QB profile are guys like Kyle Orton (who they made a bit for late last season when he was released in Denver) and Rex Grossman. Don't sleep on sexy Rexy; Grossman has a live arm, and would be better than at least 25 other teams backup signal callers. Like Johnson, he took a good defensive team to the Super Bowl.
Add a free agent receiver, but only at a steep discount: I'm not convinced that anybody currently on the Dallas roster is capable of moving up into an active receiving role. Kevin Ogletree? Please. Dwayne Harris? Let him get his first NFL reception before we consider such a thing. Jesse Holley? Dude has heart, but not much athleticism; I think we've seen his ceiling. That said, in the past the Cowboys have essentially used Witten as the third (or second) receiver, and could do so again if needed. Given how much they have invested in Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, I'd be shocked to see them break the bank for a third wideout--just too much money at the position. A wily veteran who is still around after the initial FA frenzy? Much more likely.
Go get a free agent center: the obvious offensive position of need is OC, where Dallas currently has two game but physically limited youngsters. Either of them would make a terrific backup; both are smart, tough guys who will give it their all. The problem is that their "all" routinely gets steamrolled by Vince Wilfork's "all." Moreover, with Kosier on the downward slope, and the rest of the OL comprised of young-uns, a veteran center who can recognize defenses and call out protections is a much-needed commodity.
I'd love for them to finagle either of the top two free agent prizes, Houston's Chris Myers or Green Bay's Scott Wells, into a Cowboys uniform. Depending on what the market will bear, these fellows might be priced out of Dallas' reach. If this proves to be the case, a mid-level guy, like Washington's Will Montgomery or the Jets' Samson Satele would offer an upgrade at an affordable price. Furthermore, a vet would increase the likelihood of the Cowboys' center developing the same kind of rapport with Tony Romo that Laurent Robinson did almost immediately after donning a Cowboys uniform, something in short supply with both Gurode and Costa at the pivot.
Sign a free agent tight end who can block: As I suggested above, the available tight ends in the upcoming draft tend to be Aaron Hernandez types, guys who are overgrown wide receivers. In John Phillips, they have more of an H-back type, who can block a little and do some damage in the passing game. What they don't have is another in-line tight end who can regularly seal the edge on outside running plays and take on opposing defensive ends without help, as Bennett could do. I'd look for them to pick up a guy who can do that, on the cheap, a Dan Campbell type. One option is the Texans' Joel Dreesen, who tallied very good blocking grades at PFF. He can also long-snap.
Offer Tony Fiammetta a second or third round tender: Last season, the Cowboys anemic running game got a boost from three sources: DeMarco Murray, Montrae Hollland and Fiammetta, who demonstrated the ability to clear out linebackers from the hole that Dallas has been looking for for some time now. What they do to keep him depends in part on what they think if last year's seventh-rounder, Shaun Chapas. If they think Chapas can develop this offseason, then they can risk letting Fiammetta go by offering him a lower tender. Whatever the case, they'll make some kind of offer. I suspect Chapas hasn't showed enough, and it'll be one intended to keep Fiammetta in the fold.
Re-sign Montrae Holland to a short-term free agent deal: Given the severity of needs elsewhere, I cannot see the Cowboys pursuing a Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs. If they have doubts about Nagy or Arkin for 2012, a nice contingency would be to acquire a disposable guy who wouldn't be a progress-stopper should they blossom in 2013 or beyond. Holland, who actually had a pretty good year last season, would fit that profile to a "T." And, if a guy like Stanford's David DeCastro ends up being the pick at # 14, they aren't burdened by a huge FA contract, and can dump Holland (or Kyle Kosier) as soon as the youngsters are ready to go.
OR:
Draft a promising offensive guard in the draft's first two rounds: As previously mentioned, this is a deep draft at guard, so one thing the Cowboys don't want to do is to over-invest at the position only to see the likes of David DeCastro be the best available player on their board when they select at # 14. It wouldn't surprise me to see them hold off on guard until after the draft, when a guy like Holland may well still be available. With money so tight, it makes little sense to re-up Holland if DeCastro is a legitimate first round option. Much of this depends on what they do on defense, particularly at LOLB, so we'll revisit this question in the defensive post.
Find a UDFA punter: Mat McBrier has been a terrific punter since he was unearthed during the Parcells administration. He can do it all--a booming leg is matched with a deft touch inside the 20. That said, he is descending into the vale of years, and missed time last season due to a peculiar "dropfoot" injury to a neural ganglia in his knee. The kind of money it will take to re-sign the veteran punter might be too much, such that its time to find another youngster to fill his shoes.
Looking this over, we have between three and five offensive free agent acquisitions (backup QB; OC; TE, with possibilities at WR3 and OG), a potential draft pick (OG) and a likely UDFA need at P. At first glance, it seems that, since so many of the Cowboys' offensive needs must be filled via free agency (as they can't be in the draft), that the bulk of 2012's picks will be spent on defensive players (or, in the late rounds, offensive depth, including a new developmental quarterback).
How might this defensive draft pan out? Check back in on Monday to see Rabble's musings for that side of the ball, followed up by a comprehensive overall look at an offseason plan.
Until then: Go Cowboys!

Just looking at all the posts about this and that player
Just remember, you can’t have steak at every position
"It's your world, my universe" - February 17, 2012
the old Bill Parcel’s maxim. that’s a fine attitude as long as you aren’t rolling with Alan Ball at safety or Rob Pettitti — we need sufficently good players at every spot or else our stars will never shine
AustonianAggie - February 17, 2012
Very true.....
but right now Dallas has a lot of bologna and mashed potatoes (Newman).
football mensa - February 18, 2012
Stars & Scrubs
The problem isn’t schematic, it’s the wildly uneven distribution of talent. Signing a Nicks, Williams, Campbell or Avril exacerbates, not solves the problem because it then forces us to go OL, DL and S on the cheap. Again.
And yet JJ tried to sign NA last summer sigh
tdships - February 18, 2012
That might have made our secondary better though...
And Newman expendable. Who knows.
selke99 - February 18, 2012
Ok let's keep in mind
Newmann used to be a VERYGOOD CB. Yes, that’s VERY GOOD. Log onto Dallascowboys.com, click on team, then roster, then Terence Newman and READ!
Last year, no doubt he sucked. But look at his career and show some freakin respect!!!!!
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Absolutely.
Well said
Oshawa Cowboy - February 18, 2012
Here's the problem Tyrone....
whenever a game was close, who was the cb giving up the big play ? It was always Newman. remeber who gave up the big play vs the Steelers ? Newman. I can name more games. He was good however he failed in in big ways.
football mensa - February 18, 2012
Remember the Chargers game?
It was Newman who got beat by Vincent Jackson on the Chargers TD drive.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I did like Newman up until 2010
Started getting becoming a liability.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I'm sure you can name more than a few specific games
where he didn’t make a play. How many games can you name where the QB looked to his side of the field to throw the winning pass but noticed the WR was covered?
Newman used to be good. He wasnt’ perfect and he did get beat at times. But he did make some plays and could cover. That’s all there is to it.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Hey
I like Newman, I remember all the good he did for this team. I’m done being mad at him for last season.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
People like to make performance all about character and attitude
Newman has always played well when healthy – and young. He’s not either now and it’s unfortunate for him and the team.
dunkman - February 18, 2012
AS much as I want Nicks
picking a guard in the first or second or even third might be the way to go
burmafrd1944 - February 17, 2012
Keep Fiamatta, lose Chapas
Fiamatta is two years older than Chapas, not old by any stretch. We finally (&^*^%) have a full back, they definitely need to keep him. Fiamatta is more valuable than Robinson to me
AustonianAggie - February 17, 2012
Marty B may be coming back and cheaper than we realize; If McGee is developing at all, it’s time for him to be back up or cut. I like Holland but we need more, more more guards and centers.
AustonianAggie - February 17, 2012
I too would like to see the cowboys sign either Myers or Wells
Professor Ch@os - February 17, 2012
Man that would be awesome.
If they signed either of those dudes and drafted DeCastro, I’d feel really good about this offense’s potential to close out a game. No more kicking a field goal at the last minute to take the lead and we win that game against the Patriots.
JannyDones - February 17, 2012
Koppen my choice
hopefully would be cheaper.
ziggy19 - February 18, 2012
Here's what I see happening
1) Promote John Phillips to TE # 2 and let him take over Bennett’s role. Then the Cowboys will draft their TE # 3 because they need one who can stretch the field. It makes more sense to go this route because drafting one costs less money than bringing in a veteran with accumulated years. Phillips is not a receiving threat, but is a nice short yardage/redzone option. Garrett sees the success of what New England has done and wants to have similar two TE success, so they’ll draft their receiving TE for passing situations. Think Evan Rodriguez or LaDarius Green.
2) I agree the WRs behind Dez and Bryant are not WR#3 quality. What I see happening is Laurent Robinson coming back. He has good chemistry with Romo, and doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who will bolt for the huge pay day, and knows he’s got a legit QB to get him the ball. If you see the teams with deep pockets this off season, their QBs are horrendous or average at best (Alex Smith). Maybe I’m wrong, but I doubt it.
3) I agree it makes no sense to sign a guard before seeing how the draft plays out. I disagree however, that both Nagy and Arkin will be starters for this team. It’s always cheaper and more effective to build and develop a line from within, I believe that is what Garrett is doing, even if it means drafting and developing your backups into servicable players.
3) However, there is currently no one at the center positon in house that can get the job done. They should look in free agency, it should cost around the $6 million range to sign one. The Packers notoriously don’t spend big money on their line, and the Texans have to re-sign Foster & Mario Williams as well. Therefore, I think they should be able to get either Wells or Meyers.
4) They need to sign one of these veteran CBs.
Rohpuri - February 17, 2012 via mobile
interesting idea about the 3rd TE
as a 3rd TE, his draw in the blocking scheme could be favorable since Dallas will have some choices on where to match him up. I can see this being a 5th round draft pick. God forbid they select a 3rd TE in the 2nd round.
Dallas definitely needs at least one FA interior OL, whether at Guard or Center. Center is cheapest so that makes a lot of sense. I’d like to see DeCastro blowing up holes for us. Dallas basically has 3 holes on OL, and has two developing players at guard and maybe Kolwaski is developing at Center? Can Costa improve? Goselin seems to think Dallas needs to spend one premium draft pick on the spot, and that should shore up the line.
Is the consensus that only Arkin and Nagy have much chance of developing?
AustonianAggie - February 17, 2012
i agree with your second 3
C is a must, this alone would help the Gs. then draft DeCastro and this oline is 4/5ths rebuilt with Holland, Arkin, Nagy, Killer K, Costa at the other G.
im hoping for a Robinson return but if hes more then 3 million a year is he worth it? probably but have bigger needs on D.
plz sign a solid CB in FA!

not an accomplished blocker but gives effort. If not him 2 guys that are good blockers and have untapped potential in the passing game are
Kevin Koger TE Michigan
George Bryan TE North Carolina State

Corner Back
I really wish they would sign a FA defensive back. I haven’t looked at who is available at Safety, but I’m really hoping that the Cowboys can get one of those FA corners without overpaying.
JannyDones - February 17, 2012
Question
Do you think with the NFL being a copycat league, and with the success of the Patriots 2 te system we might see a run on te in the draft sooner than they should go?

Professor Ch@os - February 17, 2012
I just do
not get the logic of some of the arguments for FA signings. Take Miles Austin for example. Miles signed a 7 year 57+ mil contract in 2010. Now Miles is a really good receiver but he surely is not the best WR in the NFL. Yet there is opposition to paying Carl Nicks roughly the same contract and he IS the best guard in the NFL. The question is if the cap hit for Nicks was 5mil in 2012 and 6mil in 2013 would you sign him? (Since everyone seems to have cap concerns)
jevans1729 - February 17, 2012
when teams like Kansas City have about 60 million in cap space...
…then the top FAs will almost certainly draw huge contracts. 5 mil for Nicks is conservative—and if the Cowboys pull the trigger there, then they won’t have funds to pay for guys elsewhere. Do you want their third corner to be a UDFA??
rabblerousr - February 17, 2012
i agree about KC and there cap space
but dont they have alot of cap space cuz they dont spend money, and almost half is what rolled over from 2011? IDK if they will spend it all.
i do believe there is a cap floor now so maybe they spend alot of it tho
yehti - February 17, 2012 via mobile
there are a LOT of teams with a LOT of space

You and the Cowboys need
to answer a question for yourselves. Do you want to give yourself the best chance at winning th e SB in 2012 or do you want to win one “down the road.?” The Cowboys went from 6-10 to 8-8. We played seventh round draft picks and UDFA’S on the O-line and hoped for the best. Now is the time to give it our best shot. You can either do cap management or you go out on your shield and try to win the SB now. The SB champ Giants were 1 mil under the cap. They spent the money and got rewarded. Romo and Ware are not getting any younger.
jevans1729 - February 17, 2012
We want to win the SB every year, but that is not what this team is doing. JMHO.
J Jones had that mindset for the longest time, that we are 1-2 players away from the big show, and it just isn’t true. J Garrett was hired to get us back to the SB and we all pretty much agreed that it was a 2 yr project, and that is exactly where we are at. I see this team being really good in the ’13 season,if,we draft well for the next 2 drafts. Which puts us in that 2 yr time frame most thought it would take. We are learning to not make the mistake of going all out for next season, that is what got us to this point. Garrett is going to build this team through the draft and fill holes in FA. I see the biggest player we sign being Spencer and our other FAs we want to keep. We might sign a center and a mid -level CB in FA,maybe. This is just MHO,not carved in stone.
NVCowboy4Life - February 18, 2012
the Giants won because they have a sound organization and a long-term talent acquisition plan
and the Cowboys will continue to struggle until they do as well.
Its time for us to face the cold hard fact that Jones and Co. have wasted Ware, Romo, Witten and Ratliff’s careers. Trying to “go out on their shield” isn’t going to get them any closer to anything except en uneven oroster and anoter 6-10 to 9-7 type of season.
rabblerousr - February 18, 2012
I might agree w/ you
in 2 years. I think the Cowboys can seriously contend for the SB in 2015. Ware and Romo will be at the end of their careers and Witten will probably be 2nd or maybe even 3rd on the depth chart by then (will require restructure of his contract to keep him).
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Another poster has mentioned this a few times before.....
.
Tap tap tap…..hmmmm
Rabble, spot on
football mensa - February 18, 2012
The Giants won one more
regular season game than the Cowboys. The Eagles had the same record as the Cowboys. I’m sorrry, I just don’t agree with your “give up” sentiment. Signing a top FA corner (since I believe they will cut Newman) is just exchanging Newman’s contract for the new corner. The deal also could be structured to be more cap friendly than Newman’s. Brandon Carr would consider 5 years and 48 mil which is about the same as Johnathan Joseph got. Structure the deal to take a 5 mil cap hit each of the first two years.
You then can sign Nicks. Give him his 58 mil over 7 years but structure the deal so that it doesn’t kill you in the short term 5-6 mil cap hit the each of the first two years. NOW, you can go to the draft. If you’re lucky, DeCastro falls to you and he is BPA. Our O-line then would be Tron, Nicks, Nagy at center (sorry Costa) DeCastro and Free. We have now significantly improved the O-Line, got a top corner to replace Newman, and we are going into the second round of the draft with 12-13 mil under the cap. Hell, I haven’t even had to restructure any existing contracts yet. I am advocating signing a couple of young top players to market contracts in the areas of need. You don’t need to go to cap hell to do this.
jevans1729 - February 18, 2012
maybe those numbers work out
But there is a very good chance these offers you are talking about are low. Teams have crazy amounts of cap space right now. That’s a concern. I don’t like the idea of overspending on two guys when there are so many holes.
Additionally, say we do miraculously only use 9 mil in cap space for two guys. We still have to get olb, ilb, ss, and wr.
ary201 - February 18, 2012 via mobile
My friend,
this is the NFL and the NFL is competitive. The 58 mil figure would make Nicks the highest paid guard in the NFL so at least the offer would have to be considered competitive. The fact that other teams have a lot of cap space doesn’t mean you don’t compete for the best players. How do you know the player in question wants to play for what could be a losing team? As far as the other positions are concerned that is what the rest of the draft and UDFA’S are for. I’m trying to make the UDFAS back ups and special teamers and not starters as is the case now.

If you do draft Decastro
You let Killer K, Arkin, and Nagy (who played C in College at WI) fight it out for the LG an C positions. You can bring Costa in the mix too but he didn’t show me a lick of upside last year. With Smith (Potential Pro Bowler) and Free, who I think is going to be a beast at his natural position of RT, Decastro at RG, and if 2 of those 3 step up we have the best young line in the game.

There are certain guys I had the foresight to know would end up being bad draft picks, and I been on this site back then, this site would have been sick of hearing about it.
Since 2007 I’ve been anti-Spencer, and since 2008 I’ve been anti-Marty B. I know it comes off as hubris, but you’ll just have to take my word for it.
This is why I’m coming out to vocal forefront and being anti-Upshaw, anti-Brockers, anti-Chandler Jones, anti-Cam Johnson. I don’t want these projects anywhere near this team. I want talented players who produced in college. The guys I don’t want on this team are the kind of guys who are talented but play to a mediocre level, or who don’t project to be better than what we already have, in my opinion. I could be wrong about these guys, but I’m trusting my instincts here and trusting what I’ve seen of them.
Rohpuri - February 17, 2012 via mobile
should say, had I been a member of this sight back in 07
Rohpuri - February 17, 2012 via mobile
As far as those pass rushing prospects I don't want
Upshaw produced at Bama, but I don’t like how he projects to the NFL. I think he’ll end up being Anthony Spencer 2.0. I don’t like him as a 34OLB, doesn’t have elite explosion to be a great pass rusher. I don’t want guys who are great at stopping the run and only good at stopping the pass. The Giants won a SB with a worse run defense than us.
Brockers, Cam Johnson and Chandler Jones have talent but never produced at college. Sure they look like football players, but they don’t have the consistent production I like. They either never developed, are injury prone, or lack the ability to be forces in rushing the passer.
Rohpuri - February 17, 2012 via mobile
What about Coples?
I hear that dude took plays off at UNC. That was coming from Tarheel Paul and if he doesn’t want him and watched him play consistently, then I don’t want him.
JannyDones - February 17, 2012
If Coples fell to us, I take him
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012
Brockers might be gone at 14... the Panthers have a scheduled visit march 8th.
DCNation73 - February 18, 2012
Good I hope they take him
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
I know
but is it hingsight if you never wanted to draft that player?
personally, I was leaning towards Jamaal Charles Jermichael Finley and another I forget
Martellus Bennett was never a player I wanted
to be fair let me admit where I was wrong too
in 2010, I wanted Akwasi, we got him and I was thrilled, I was dead wrong about Akwasi, easily one of my biggest failures in my draft evaluations
in 2010 I wanted Nate Allen or Morgan Burnett in the 2nd round, I wasn’t mad at the Sean Lee pick, I actually loved it, but I really wanted a safety
but I was wrong and still right, I know that sounds stupid but its true
the DC.com site has a show called The Blitz and they had a draft special right before the draft
Sean Lee Dez Bryant and Akwasi were all on the show talking about how great it would be for them to be Cowboys and at the end of the show, a question was asked to Mickey Spagnola about who is most likely to be drafted by the Cowboys? Now Mickey could have picked anyone in the entire draft, but he said Sean Lee
he said how much the Cowboys loved this kid and everything he had heard in Valley Ranch was that Lee would be a Cowboy
personally I thought Lee was going to go much much higher and I thought Mickey was off his rocker suggesting Lee would fall that far, but he was right
spot on
Archie Barberio - February 17, 2012
First and last time the Mickeroo was spot on!

football mensa - February 18, 2012
What is frustrating with Bennett is we can all see why he was drafted
He has so much damn potential. He could be an absolute monster, but for whatever reason he can’t get it done. Parcells used to say, “potential means you haven’t done anything”.
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
You can apply that quote
To Brockers, Chandler Jones, and Cam Johnson.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
That is
because you refuse to accept WHY they drafted him and no one can tell you any different soooo……..
jevans1729 - February 18, 2012
well I dont believe he was drafted to be a blocking tight end
if that is true, that is the worst logic of drafting a 2nd round player I have ever heard in my life
Archie Barberio - February 18, 2012
He wasn't drafted to be a blocking TE
He was drafted to be another weapon on offense, force teams to get out of base defense on pass downs, which Fasano wasn’t able to do.
Dallas had the foresight to see a two tight end offense in the passing game would be deadly, they just happened to get a bunt single with Fasano, and then strike out on Bennett.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
You're right
he wasn’t drafted to be a blocking tight end. He also wasn’t drafted to be Shannon Sharpe/Tony Gonzalez. He was drafted so the Cowboys could run their two tight end offense. This included attacking cover 2 defensive schemes, physical mismatches with safetys and LBs, blitz pick up when playing against the 3-4 defenses, ( the Joe Gibbs theory), it allows the offensive co-ordinator to have the last word on where the strong side of the offense will be by sending the TE in motion, etc.
You will also recall when Bennett was drafted in ‘07, we didn’t exactly have a FB who was lighting it up. So the pick made sense from a pass protection and scheme stand point. Bennett was always going to get the fewest targets of any receiver and that was by design. You sure weren’t going to target Bennett over T.O. or Witten.
jevans1729 - February 18, 2012
well put

tag Fiametta with the lowest tender
he was drafted in the 4th round and I think we can find his replacement in the 4th easily

4th is pretty high for a FB

Fiamettas a great FB though

doesn't Flammetta have concusion problems?
i might be wrong but i thought there was a medical reason Carolina cut ties with him.
DCNation73 - February 18, 2012
why is there a question about bringing back laurent robinson?
this guy ought to be our third WR – or second, if miles is too brittle or dez can’t keep it together.
my goodness we NEED a C. please, God… and i’d keep kowalski over costa, who should get a chance to compete at G. glad to spend a higher draft pick on a G as well.
i like the idea of keeping fiametta if he’s not too pricey. i keep hearing about being able to replace him easily, but before tony, who was our last good FB?
g8tgod - February 17, 2012
I agree
He looked like our no 1 at times. There are a lot of free agent wrs this year,so maybe we can sign him to a reasonable k
cmttx - February 17, 2012
If you were L Robinson
and you just had your BEST SEASON EVER playing for America’s Team. You caught 11 TD passes. You had over 700 yards. And now, you’re looking to be a #2 WR and get paid.
Why would you stay in Dallas and take less money to play behind two fantastic young WRs when you can go someplace like Houston (who has Andre Johnson and no one else)?
Tyrone Jenkins - February 17, 2012
I think this is definitely a fair assessment
Robinson was our best receiver in 2011. I know he didn’t often get coverage from a no.1 corner, but, he was awesome. I hope he does come back, but if it means not signing a veteran corner back, then I think the team will be okay without his services next season. But, I will certainly miss him and to be honest I will definitely be rooting for him.
JannyDones - February 17, 2012

Get a room!
A lot of people said the same about Free – why would he re-sign with Dallas…. I think Dallas has the upperhand because LR wants to be there. They’ll get a bit of a hometown discount, just not a huge one. I’m betting we see him as a Cowboy next season. They’ve wasted a lot of time and money trying to get WRs who might perform (Galloway, RW, Hurd, Crayton) that I doubt they’ll quit on a guy who actually can and fit in well with the offense. Paying a player fair market value is never a mistake if you know he will get the job done. What they can’t afford is throwing similar money at guys who may not….
dunkman - February 18, 2012
everytime someone brings up Joe Louis...
I’m glad you brought up Free because I think he should’ve been let go. Yes, that’s right, no longer a Cowboy. Last year, Tyson Clabo was coming off of a stellar year at RT in Atlanta. He resigned for a 5 yr / $25 million BEFORE Free was resigned. I mentioned Free was worth NO MORE than what Claybo got but would’ve much rather had Claybo instead.
Now, it seems the Cowboys will be moving Free to RT and pay him $3 mil more per year than a RT that is clearly better than he is. In fact, I’ll go one further and mention that Free will end his career either struggling to be an NFL OT or playing fairly well as an NFL OG.
$8 mil / yr is the reason why Free stayed. If Robinson stays, it will also be because JJ overpays.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
If we hadn't paid Free LT money someone else would have.
Other teams were making a run at him. He was a rare young LT that hit the market. And don’t forget, he did a good job that year, his 1st starting.
We really would have been screwed if we had let Free walk. We would have gone into the season with a raw rookie, Tyron at RT/LT and what else? Possibly able to sign Clabo? And hope Tyron was going to not have to many growing pains and be able to handle the switch to the LT spot at the same time?
Remember if we had been bidding on Clabo that price would of course be higher, not the same. Who knows how high it would have ended up being.
Rena - February 18, 2012
Exactly my point
and their board would be sounding off w/ why did they pay Free LT money and he showed up and laid an egg?
I wanted Claybo and was crucified for it (wasn’t on BTB yet but on other websites).
Fans fall in love w/ players after the slightest amount of production. It happened w/ MBIII, FJ, Free, Austin, T Smith, Lee and most recently, DM. Then the Dallas FO gets ahead of themselves and starts remarking about great the player is.
FJ and DM are AVERAGE (yes, average) when you factor in durability. Austin is solid. Smith is solid. The only 3 elite players on this team are Ware, Romo and Witten.
the Cowboys is a franchise – in other words a business. If a player isn’t worth the $, let him walk. If the Boys did a better job of drafting and had some leadership, they wouldn’t need to OUT BID the competition – they’d be seriously contending for a SB and that coupled with a quality organization would suffice for a hometown discount and players will stay because they WANT to.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Smith is more than solid
by the end of the season he might have just about been the best RT in the league
burmafrd1944 - February 18, 2012
He's SOLID
Part of the problem w/ Cowboys fans is that we’re so USED to mediocre or worse play, that when someone comes along and plays somewhat better, it’s viewed as if the guy is best ever. There were more than a few RTs better than he was – Tyson Clabo was for one. If Smith was better, he would’ve been in the pro bowl (it’s not like he didn’t get ANY votes, just not enough).
And now it seems, he’ll be moved to LT. He’ll face better pass rushers and will be compared to better OTs. Until he grades out in the top 5 in the NFC for more than 2 yrs, he’s solid.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Pro Bowl should be 2 words never spoken
by an educated fan. We all know how overrated it is. It’s a popularity contest and that’s all it ever will be. How many sacks did Smith give up compared to Gaybo?
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
When a guy that young drops off that much
I suspect nagging injury, but we’ll see what Free does next year.
dunkman - February 18, 2012
Agree
If he’s smart enough to realize its better to stay in a system and with a QB where he’s had success he’ll stay. If another team makes a stupid offer or his agent convinces him he can transfer that success elsewhere, he’ll go. Don’t be surprised if he winds up back in SD, especially if Vincent Jackson leaves.
The Hometown Discount for DAL is cheap real estate and no state income tax, nothing more. Probably more relevant to a 3rd WR than a top-tier player.
A major factor in DAL favor is the plethora of decent FA talent on the market – keeping prices and options reasonable if he doesn’t stay.
tdships - February 18, 2012
I think hometown discount is more than that
it’s family stability, it’s knowing team mates and not starting over, it’s being comfortable in a system. Over my lifetime I often had to decide between advancement/better pay and staying put and always stayed put over a marginal pay increase. People almost always prefer the status quo when things are going well and the compensation is roughly the same.
dunkman - February 18, 2012
yeah especially since he KNOWS he gets along well with JG and Romo
he knows his place on the team and Romo obviously trusts him as he had his breakout year.
willyoubemycharizard - February 18, 2012
Maybe he
Would want to stay in Dallas because he had bouncing around from team to team and actually had success with romo.
Also the market is filled with a lot of solid #1 and #2 wide outs, so there will be a larger pool of free agents that teams have for signing one.
Maybe the question shouldn’t be why would Robinson want to stay in Dallas, but why would any other team want to sign Robinson to a freakish contract when he’s bounced around from team to team and there are many other free agents available.

dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
I disagree at WR. Dez only makes
11.8 million X 5 years. Robinson was the most productive WR last year. It bugs me when people say Bryant and Austin drew all the coverage when Austin was hardly ever on the field and Dez disappears after halftime.
dmagikwand - February 17, 2012
magik
Be sure to keep in mind that almost all contracts “balloon” or get more expensive in future years. Robinson is no doubt looking for a long term contract – probably something in the neighborhood of 5-7 years long. I’m sure the Boys’ FO is looking down the road and considering when Dez’s rookie contract will end and he’ll be looking for his 2nd (max money and time as well).
Imagine 3 years from now Dallas payin Miles 6-7 million, Robinson 4-5 million and Dez fresh off a pro-bowl season looking for a new contract.
Fans need to consider that the Boys are looking well beyond just next year.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 17, 2012
so its going to take Dez 6 years in the NFL to make a probowl?
DCNation73 - February 18, 2012
No i'm stating that
he’ll have a pro bowl season (probably his 2nd or 3rd) by then and will be wanting to be paid highest WR in the league $
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
I hope you're right.
If he’s wanting to be the highest paid WR, that means we’ve had success as a team. Pay the man and whatever is left, give to Murray and Lee.
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
Nice article Rabble
I think you can tell by my posts in other articles that I’ve been thinking the same thing…
I’ll reserve comment until you post your defensive addition as the overall strategy for FA and the draft will, of course, encompass the D and ST.
I like your ideas so far though.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 17, 2012
My GM plan
Here is what I would try to do to help offense:
-move McGee to backup QB. saves money and it is his last year of rookie deal so he needs to show us if he is worth keeping.
-tender Fiammetta and keep developing Chapas on PS
-resign Laurent Robinson. i’ve been to three sites and looked at free agent listings. in all Robinson is out of the top ten. this can be done for a reasonable amount. plus, he is insurance just in case Dez explodes in a bad way.
-sign Joel Dreessen as your blocking TE. Houston had the best running game in the NFL last year and Dreessen was their blocking TE. plus he is unrestricted so no picks.
-flip your tackles ( I know too obvious but I had to put it in)
-draft a late round OT like Levy Adcock (6’5/322 Oklahoma St.) to compete with Pernell as backup swing OT
-draft DeCastro in first round and start him at LG. Arkin as backup
-Nagy and Kosier battle for RG spot. loser is backup RG (Kosier)
-money whip Scott Wells of GB and make him my starting OC
so starting offensive line would be:
LT-Smith
LG-DeCastro
OC-Wells
RG-Nagy
RT-Free
-in just two years Dallas has gone from one of the oldest offensive lines to one of the youngest and most athletic
Primary backups:
LT/RT: winner of Adcock/Pernell
LG: Arkin
OC: Costa/Kowalski winner
RG: Kosier
QB: Romo with McGee as #2
FB: Fiammetti
TB: Murray with Jones as #2
WR: Austin #1, Bryant #2, Robinson #3
TE: Witten with Dreessen #2 and Phillips #3
TexasGarcia37 - February 17, 2012
that not too bad
But, not realistic either.
I like the way you mention “resign Laurent Robinson” as if it’s just that easy. Laurent Robinson is a #2 WR in this league – why would he want to play #3 for the next 5-7 years behind Dez and Miles when he could go to teams that are seriously contending (like the Patriots to replace Branch, Ravens, Texans or several other teams)? Plus, resigning him would probably eat up a 3rd of the 20 mil cap (he’s worth 6-8 per year as a #2).
How much is Scott Wells gonna cost – $4-7 mil / yr. That might be doable.
Also, why start Nagy and use Kosier as the backup – right now, Kosier is better (and probably will be next year).
Tyrone Jenkins - February 17, 2012
I know
I tried to find the number for comparable #3s, but ran out of steam. just kind of slapped this together and went as in depth as I could.
TexasGarcia37 - February 17, 2012
"just kind of slapped this together and went as in depth as I could."
pretty much sums it up.
rabblerousr - February 18, 2012
first draft
more of an outline with more specifics to come.
TexasGarcia37 - February 18, 2012
6'2" 200lbs 4.33 40 at the Combine in 2007
Not # 3 measurables and who really knows about any of them in three years? Dez could be out of football. Miles could have an Achilles. What we do know is Romo loves Robinson and he wants to stay in Dallas. Of course LR could get hurt the 1st game after we signed him as well…
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
Kosier is done
injuries are piling up
burmafrd1944 - February 18, 2012
Great plan
Can this really happen?
Man that would be awesome. The only question I have is do we still have the money to spend on a veteran CB?
But, then again, if they didn’t get Wells, but found somebody else that left room for a veteran Corner, then I am on board.
I think the offense could actually make the defense look really good, with an improved offensive line. Man can you imagine the clock burning drives that keep the opposing defense on the field. Going for it on 4th & 1…. And making it!!!
Then the defense comes back on the field rested while the offense was out there building morale, scoring touchdowns.
JannyDones - February 17, 2012
Need to see the whole plan.
FA priority #1 – OC or CB? or LOLB? Big diff. Too many holes on the back end. “Must haves” remember. And that’s the secondary.
stubabe - February 17, 2012
gotta be LOLB
as that’s where the hole is at present.
Right now, Newman and Nagy are better than nobody (or Butler). And that, in a sentence is a summary indictment of the Cowboys front office.
rabblerousr - February 18, 2012
so, a lot of the defensive article will be taken up with a discussion of Spencer
you;re always getting ahead of the story, Stu!
rabblerousr - February 18, 2012
Read an article about L Robinson, asking, what he wants to be.
He could be a mid-level #2 WR somewhere else or he could be the best #3 WR in the league for the Cowboys. It all comes down to what Dallas offers and what he wants to be. I for on would want to be the best #3 at 3-5 mil,but that is me.
NVCowboy4Life - February 18, 2012
for a winning team, perhaps
but why stay here when there’s no guarantee that he’ll get the supplementary benefits that winning provides?
rabblerousr - February 18, 2012
agreed
NV – look around the league. Think about what SF would’ve been had they had a WR who could catch. They have one of the best TEs in the league but Craptree and Ginn Jr aren’t getting it done. Neither is Branch or Ochocinco for the Pats. Or anyone not named Andre Johnson in Houston.
3-5 million to play for an 8-8 team of that same money (possibly more) to play for a playoff team?
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
TJ, but the good thing is it is a buyer's market this year:
2012 FREE AGENT WR
Ranked by nfltraderumors.com
1. Mike Wallace (restricted)
2. Dewayne Bowe
3. Vincent Jackson
4. Marques Colston
5. Wes Welker
6. Desean Jackson
7. Stevie Johnson
8. Reggie Wayne
9. Brandon Lloyd
10.Laurent Robinson
(Honorable mention: Robert Meachem)
Yes, I have a Laurent and Kirkpatrick crush working at the moment LOL. My obsessions have been changing weekly though. I’m just ready for FA and the draft to be over with so I can stop.
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
Banghead....Mike Wallace is a nuke.
He offers kill shot from anywhere on the field….coulda shoulda……
football mensa - February 18, 2012
Of that list
Wallace back to the Steelers.
Bowe back to the Chiefs or possibly 49ers.
VJ is a GOOD prospect but not for Dallas – he won’t want to be 3rd WR.
Same for Colston.
Welker isn’t going anywhere new.
DJ is a POS that nobody wants
SJ is somewhat intersting…
Wayne is over the hill but would make for an EXCELLENT WR3 for the Boys if he can be “convinced” he’s just the 3. He could provide leadership, step in and be WR2 when Dez and Miles get hurt (for them it’s not if, it’s when) and lead the WR group. I like RW to the Cowboys.
BL drops more passes than TO.
LR is a #2 WR and will be competing w/ guys mentioned earlier for better destinations like SF, Bmore, NE, etc.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
But will he have the same "Instant Chemistry" with A Smith as he did with Romo?
In my youth I traveled with my job,a lot! Now that I am a little older, knowing where I am sleeping every night means a lot to me. Dunk alluded to this up the thread. It just seems to me,after listening to L Robinson talk,he would rather keep what he has in Dallas. Going for the $$$ with a another team is no guarantee that he will be doing anything but bouncing around some more. JMHO,but it sounds to me that he wants some “same old same old” for a while.
NVCowboy4Life - February 18, 2012
Comment above,in re to TJ replying to me,above^ :-),
NVCowboy4Life - February 18, 2012
If Romo could pick 2 out of the 3 himself...
I think we know which 2 he would pick. Hopefully 3-5 million would do it, and maybe he is still under the radar. Chemistry cannot be overrated. Dez is a great talent but he has to be where Romo expects him to be when he expects him to be there. Hopefully he will get it figured out next year. I love his desire to score on every play and his refusal to go out of bounds although it scares me sometimes. And I don’t think it"s out of the question that Romo would restrucure. He’s a smart guy and if he can do something to keep WR or get quality OL I would think he would be onboard.
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
SF would have won
if they had a good QB
burmafrd1944 - February 18, 2012
Hell, they would have won if they had a punt returner

He was matching Brees and the Saints, TD drive for TD drive. I was in shock watching it.

So
Everyone wants to go guard and keep the same crappy defense outside of ware, Rattliff, and Jenkins and hope we can sign big name free agents instead of drafting talent like the giants, ravens, steelers, and even Texans have done our defense blew a 12 point lead late at home we never got key stops or 3 rd down stops is decastro gonna play some defense cause if not we r gonna b in the same postion as last year in my opion. nospinzonefactor - February 18, 2012
Yeah your probably right, but at least he has a pulse unlike most of our team
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
I would be interested in Shockey
Archie Barberio - February 18, 2012
Can't see him under Garrett.
But anything is possible with Jerry.
selke99 - February 19, 2012
sorry should be Shockey for TE
LeedsCowboys - February 18, 2012
A good rabblerouser isn't also the voice of reason.
Nice work, man!
BlueNSilverBlood - February 18, 2012
Or maybe he is, and the idiots just fight over what he says.
IDK, either way, I’m going to sleep.
BlueNSilverBlood - February 18, 2012
I hope Dre Kirkpatrick passes his character eval and tests well at the combine
I just re-watched some Alabama stuff…the first thing I noticed…Dre Kirkpatrick is a CB that hits like a safety, and isn’t afraid to tackle. You could play this guy anywhere, a chess piece DB. If he’s there at 14, I won’t complain. We need a DB like him. We need toughness and playmaking, he’s got it.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
He is faster and looks like he lays more or as much wood as Barron IMO
Reminds me a bit of C. Woodson.
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
Yeah does
All I needed to see was highlights from the Arkansas game to sell me. I’m buying in.
Rohpuri - February 18, 2012 via mobile
He He He...He said wood.
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
I know right. He made a highlight reel out of one game
Also, there is a youtube video of an interview with him after what I think is the game you are talking about. He just doesn’t seem to put off a shady vibe. I sense shadiness with Jenkins. The more I dig into it though the less I see him dropping. I really hope I’m wrong. There will still be a nice player there at 14 though.
dmagikwand - February 18, 2012
Off Topic, But this was a pretty scary looking headline.

Why no love for Jesse Holley?
All the guy does is make big plays. He catches the game winner against SF and then in the next 2 games, he doesn’t even get in. He’s caught a lot of big 3rd down passes, and I’ve yet to see him not give 110%. What we need is more guys like him on the team.
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
great heart
but undertalented. We need guys w/ his heart w/ Dez talent.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Under-talented? How did you come up with that evaluation?
Seems like every catch he makes is a big play for a first down or more. Dez could learn a lot from Holley. I’ll take Jesse all day long over Ogletree.
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
It's not a mistake that he wasn't drafted
people say its because he played basketball. it was because he doesn’t have that much talent. Not overly fast, not overly quick, doesn’t separate well but is average in most categories. He does have heart.
Tyrone Jenkins - February 18, 2012
Is it not a mistake that Romo wasn't drafted?
Did you even watch the show he won? All the coaches said that the competition was a lot harder than any training camp they would go through. He won a roster spot at training camp, he wasn’t guaranteed a spot on the team, he had to earn it. And he’s been on the team for 4 years, so he must be doing something right. Not overly fast? Fast enough to outrun the 49er’s secondary 80 yds. for the game winner, fast enough to be the first guy down on kickoff coverage. And how would you know about quickness and separation. Let me give you some facts about this year…7 targets…7 catches for 169 yds. and 6 first downs. That’s a 24.1 avg. Yards After Catch?…How about 60? Also returned 1 punt for 15 yds. So how can you say anything bad about that? The guy needs to get on the field and play. He is nothing but a hard worker that never complains…just like the “other” undrafted player.
Mikellie - February 18, 2012
Good call-stats are ruining the discussion of football
everyone thinks they’re an expert and they quote 40 and shuttle times.
Some guys are just players. This dude is a player. You could see the same thing in Austin his first few years when he could manage to get on the field.
The flip side of this is those who still defend Bennett. (Sorry if you’re on…) Just watch him play. I don’t care how “athletic” he is, he’s no football player.
Realist Larry - February 19, 2012
he makes plays
he only had like 8 catches this year, but every single one of those catches was a big play
I would love to see him get more looks because he is very underrated as a WR and has totally worked on his game since making this team
he proved me wrong, I thought he sucked as a WR, but man he really changed my opinion this year
Archie Barberio - February 18, 2012
Plus...
It seems like when he’s targeted! He’s wide open. I don’t think opponents respect him. Don’t know why he doesn’t get more looks.

De or Olb
if this draft is deep in corners, guards, should we not look at a premium De or OLBIF in the first and fill with cb and ol in the second and third. Not taking into account FA
Oshawa Cowboy - February 18, 2012
2 FA pickups
Starting corner and then look at Chase Minnifield in the second.Either one of the top centers or Satale and a guard in the 3rd.The rest all D

It’s like 9:30 on Sat morning – time for the defensive edition of your article…
High anticipation here you can see.

Whoa!
What the hell is Martellus doing with the ball in that picture? Did he catch it? Now there’s something you don’t see everyday.

Can't lose Laurent......
I’m not so sure Austin (on-field – seems to have the concentration of a fly at a BBQ) or Bryant (off-field – mall trips, studying/working) are completely reliable and Robinson has a developing chemistry.
Ogletree can leave anytime and you can always find a decent WR in a later round.
They have to upgrade the O-Line, Safety or Corner in Round-1. Can’t play around with that pick. You have to take BPA for those 3 spots. The 2nd round? Same thing those 3 areas have to be addressed in the same way.

Great article
The overall evaluation and forecast is solid.
OL-I view Arkin as a potential longterm starter. Is he ready in 2012? Good question. Nagy, Costa, and Kowalski have proven to be servicable. JJ’s comments(overzealous) clearly state we need help. If healthy, Holland and Kosier are decent players, but coming off inury? Bottomline is DeCastro helps Day1 and is cheaper for 4yrs than any of the top FAs. We can also target a OC in rds 1-4, whether it’s Konz early or Brewster later. At any rate shelling out 7-8 million a year for Nicks is a trainwreck. Also I feel that Free will return to better play next season. Something was up with him. Whether it was injury or a lack of offseason, not sure.
WR-Robinson is a must sign, but he must be reasonable. If not, how about Eddie Royal, who also helps in the return game. Let’s help LR realizes the value of the connection he and Romo have. I feel he will bust elsewhere.
TE- I think MartyB is going to be shocked with his value. I just don’t see a bidding war for his services. So if he is gone get a cheap blocker. Here’s one: See if we can get Miles Plumlee to convert to foootball after the season. I don’t see him playing in the NBA, but at 6-10, 240-250, physical, solid hands and mobile, he could be a jumpball monster. Just for kicks and giggles of course.
Projection: FA-CB(Routt if the price is right), CB(cheap vet), ILB, OG/C(short term potential starter, including Holland resign), NT(widebody if the dollars allow it) DRAFT: OG and OC(doesn’t have to be at 14th), CB(Minniefield and Tru Johnson), FS/SS(George Iloka), ILB, DE( Conrath, Wolfe), OLB There are plenty of late picks here, so it is possible.

My FA Plan:
Just please after all these years dump Bennett.
Any signings after that are gravy.
Like Chia I hated that pick from Day One, and the fact that some here STILL defend the guy always gives me a smile. We had Fasano on the roster already, a serviceable backup TE.
I mean, who builds their offense around a having a good backup, 2nd, TE??
“2-TE Offense” That will always be a punchline to me.
Realist Larry - February 19, 2012
Well, the modern
“2-TE Offense” that people like you find to be a punchline, was started by Joe Gibbs in the ‘80s to block Lawrence Tayor. If you would like to actually become acquainted with the logic of this offensive scheme, and why it’s run, you can go here. http://www.footballtimes.org/Article.asp?ID=218 The article actually makes a case for “Three Tight Ends”.
Come to think of it, New England runs a two tight end scheme and went to the SB this year. Imagine that.
