Cowboys Director Of Player Personnel Ciskowski Candidate For NFL GM Jobs

According to multiple sources, the Indianapolis Colts are interviewing Dallas Cowboys assistant director of player personnel Tom Ciskowski this weekend for their recently vacated general manager job. Other candidates who've reportedly been granted permission to interview for the Colts job include the Atlanta Falcons director of scouting David Caldwell and director of player personnel Les Snead, Philadelphia's director of player personnel Ryan Grigson and the New York Giants' director of college scouting Marc Ross. The Colts are also looking at in-house candidate and director of player personnel Tom Telesco, and are rumored to be also interested in Buffalo's assistant general manager Doug Whaley.

Former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson tweeted yesterday that he thinks Ciskowski is "good", and that he had talked to the Colts and recommended Ciskowski.

Jerry Jones said yesterday that he's not surprised the Colts are interested in interviewing Ciskowski.

"Of course that's how it works. When people do a very good job they do get opportunities and Tom does an outstanding job of coordinating all of our scouts," Jones said on KRLD-FM. "He has a group of people, probably 30, who he basically coordinates of what we call pro scouting and college scouting and then we have our college scouts evaluate our pro teams as well as our own team. Tom does coordinate that and it's a big job. He answers directly to Stephen Jones, who is head of our personnel, and ultimately to me. He certainly should have the opportunity to advance and he may get a chance to advance with this interview."

Star-divide

Nick Eatman from dallascowboys.com writes that in addition to the Colts, the Rams are also believed to have inquired about Ciskowski. Ciskowski had already interviewed for the Rams job in 2006, but the position went to Billy Devaney, who was fired this week.

Ciskowski originally joined the Cowboys scouting department in 1992 as a Combine scout. Over time, he moved up through the ranks of the scouting organization, first as an area scout in the West and later taking over the South East. He was named the Director of College and Pro Scouting in 2008, after working for seven years as the club’s assistant director of college scouting. In 2011 his title was changed to Assistant Director of Player Personnel.

The interest in Ciskowski (and there are rumors that more teams than just the Colts and Rams are looking at him) highlights the fact that while Jerry Jones - and to a lesser extent Stephen Jones - hog all the headlines, the Cowboys have personnel people on their staff who are highly regarded among their NFL peers.

The issue for personnel people in Dallas is that both the title of General Manager and that of Vice President of Player Personnel are not available, as both have been held by the same two guys since 1989, Jerry and Stephen Jones. As such, it's almost inevitable that Ciskowski will eventually leave the Cowboys, just as Jeff Ireland did before him. And it's just as likely that the Cowboys already have a succession plan in place for this eventuality.

The most likely candidate to replace Ciskowski is Todd Williams, who is currently Director of Football Administration and previously held the position of Assistant Director of Player Personnel for the Cowboys. Until recently, Williams was Ciskowski's #2 man in the scouting department. But because other teams had been sniffing around Williams, and it was only a matter of time before Ciskowski landed a GM job somewhere, the Cowboys moved Willimas to a postion where he could gain more experience with the financial and contractual aspects of the personnel side of the business.

judd garett???

Any relation to JG??

he has a twin brother Pudd also coaching.
Pudding Pop Garrett is a scout

Crud Jarrett Garrett works as a scout somewhere too

AKA Big Pudd and Little Pudd.
Garrett Family tree

Garrett’s father, Jim, was a scout with the Cowboys from 1987-2004.

Jim and Jane Garret have seven children. In order: Jim III, Jane, Jennifer, Janine, Jill, John, Jason, and Judd.

The three youngest, John (TE coach, passing game coord.), Jason (Head Coach) and Judd (Assistant Director of Pro Scotuing) all work for the Cowboys.

makes me nervous when you see so many people from the same family in one organization
Spranao

Just said on ESPN Jerry wants him back…Todd Haley also. Im all for those moves

Six coaches contracts are expiring, Jerry said there will be some asst coach changes.
which 6 are expiring?

Houck? Campo? Maxie? i seriously hope all those 3 are gone next season. Houch did well with Free but i think he was overrated last season & after seeing him get pushed around it takes a little wind out of the Houch sail IMO.

Houck and Campo are two names that keep popping up in this discussion.

I will die a little inside if either of them stick around.

Maxie's is up, too. There are something like three more; I'll try to find them.
Did he give any indication that he's interested? It would be great.
just heard it was down to the Cowboys & Jets for Spranao.

i hope Jerry didnt piss Spranao off before he left bc that would be a great pick up by the Cowboys.

What position is he up for with the Jets?
i didnt the title but probably something on the lines of what he did before becoming a head coach i'd assume.

they might add something to his title to make more $ but Spranao was known for being a great OL coach

I hope it's not something that exceeds what's open with the Cowboys. By all

reports, he would be a great addition to our staff.

i didnt see his title++
OC?
whatever title they give isn't going to reflect what other organizations do.

his job will mainly be coaching up the OL in pass protection & the running game. what confuses me is that Spranao likes the bigger OL that Garrett seemed to get awy from.
either way if they land Spranao its a good move & with the Jets trending down hopefully it gives Dallas a better shot.

I keep reading that he and Romo have a great rapport, so I'm hoping that

would maybe be the tie breaker. We know Jerry will pay well.

i beleive Spranao & S.Payton were the ones that got Romo.

Denver offered more $ to Romo back when he was undrafted iirc but he decided to come to Dallas bc he had a better chance to make the team.
i also believe S.Payton went to E.ILL (just like Shannohan) so they had the inside scoop on him.

You're right about Payton; he did go to Eastern Illinois, and he was

instrumental in getting Romo to the Cowboys. I didn’t realize Sparano was involved, too. I’m getting my hopes up here!

Payton also wanted Romo

When he got the head job in NO.

Romo might already have a ring.
C'mon, Jerruh! Get Soprano Sparano back!

I’m getting excited for next year already.

yeah getting some of the proven coaches back in the fold can get ya excited.

Spranao is a no nonsense kind of coach & should not only coach the OL but instill that nasty attitude needed to have sucess in the NFL.
hiring Spranao would be a homerun & the Jets know this also after facing him twice a season.

Yeah, I'm sure the taste Sparano left in their mouth (the Jets) this year is purrrr-etttttyyyy bitter.

I like his fire and energy. I’ve watched him on the sidelines here in South Florida for the last few years, and have taken a little guilty pleasure in watching his head coaching tenure fail here, in hopes he would return back to Dallas.

Schefter tweet this:
Tony Sparano and Todd Haley have discussed joining forces in 2012 with Sparano coaching run game, Haley pass game, as they did in Dallas.

So far, he won’t say if they’re interested in doing this for the Cowboys.

Nepotism might stop that team from coming to Dallas.
Too many Garretts? Or do they not like Stephen Jones? More than

one nepotistic relationship.

A wise man said "never hire a person you can't fire"

and you can’t fire family.

salivating at the thought...
where would Haley fit in?

Dallas already has Robinsion as Wrs coach/offensive asst & Garret is the passing coordinator.

Asst to the asst HC.
If he can coach DB, I'm all for it.

He’ll at least light some fire to the DB backfield.

This is going to be an interesting off season. Lots of shake ups. I was listening to

the radio guys here the other day, and they were saying that, as much as there needs to be some player turnover, especially on defense, the coaching staff should be scrutinized and some let go.

Adding that they said that a lot of the staff are holdovers from previous regimes and that

Garrett should get more of his choices in place.

I think Jerry will circumcise all asst coaches.
LOL, huh?
Yeah, since Jimmy left, Jerry has nudered all the HCs also.
thats sad & were starting to see Garrett is not much different.
These asst coach hires will tell us something about JG's power.
after watching Jerry in that Philly game told me a lot about Garretts power.

either way its obvious Jerrys ego is bigger then what this organization can handle. losing scouts isn’t ever a good thing but if these are the same guys that got us Carpenter, Spears, Spencer or Felix with the 1st round picks then it might be a good thing there gone.

That sounds like JJ, Wade and Parcell's rather than Ciskowski.

All his team can do is evaluate and recommend, as far as the final decision, well in that era we all know who pulled the trigger.

Jerry said JG would have final say on players and coaches, I didn't believe then and I don't believe it now.

Like the old saying " you can’t teach an old frog new tricks".

God, I hope that's wrong, but JJ has an ego and if things don't turn around fast,

I fear he’ll revert to his old ways.

I think he it was lip service about JG having the hammer on coaches and players.
Yeah, I agree on the neutering, or rather, I think he picked guys that came

pre-neutered, with the exception of Parcells, and I think Parcells was just kinda done.

Tuna needed the money
He just wasn't the same coach.
No fire left to do the job properly.
Not sure how healthy he was either.
i cant wait to see what Wolick (sp) does with an offseason.

we still havent seen the rewards of having him for an entire offseason. that OL should be a heck of lot stonger & the same goes for the LB’s

going to look at some DBs, OLBs & DL that could be picked with the 14th overall selection.

has anyone seen where J.Hosley is expected to be drafted? that kid can cover, defend the pass & has the nose to get INTs. he also has the speed to be a returner…

Round 2-3 for Hosley right now.
Just Google it. Type in the "J Hosley draft scouting report" or something similar and click the links.
Is any one upset with JJ letting Ciskowski leave?

When Jeff Ireland left and before JJ seemingly gave control to JG, player personnel issues seemed to flounder for awile until Cis got everything back on track. If Stephen doesn’t have a good backup, this may once again demonstrate how JJ’s ego comes before the team. Scary thought IMO.

Not sure how this works. JJ has to let him interview, since it's a promotion, right? Unless

Jerry is willing to make him GM, I don’t think there’s anything he can do to keep him (well or if Ciskowski can be bought with bigger money).

SERIOUSLY?

2009!

He's not making the picks

he organizes the board from what all the scouts give him and then on draft day, he can make cases for who he likes to Jerry but Jerry makes the final decision after hearing things from everyone.

Scouts have been saying 09 was a lot of Wade, he would get enamored with some guys and not listen to the scouts. It could be they are only saying that to save their reputation but we won’t ever know.

APRIL 29, 2009 - MR. TOM CISKOWSKI SPEAKS -

Dallas Cowboys scouting director Tom Ciskowski said the organization is pleased with the recent draft despite criticism for selecting Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee in the fourth round and concentrating on special teams players.

With no picks the first day and 12 selections the second day, the Cowboys added depth at linebacker and the secondary but didn’t address what some felt were the biggest needs — safety and wide receiver.

“Because a lot of these players will be good special teams players, the media has misconstrued that all they can do is play special teams," said Ciskowski, an Oklahoma native. "That’s not true at all. We drafted football players that can play special teams.

“Because we signed (three veteran free agents), for the most part we have our 22 starters penciled in. But some of these draft picks will be quality backups that can ascend into starters."

THANKS TOM…..

Tommy Boy went 0 for 12

How can anyone who is being paid to evaluate “football” players miss twelve straight times!!!

If I was Indianapolis…I’d run for the hills before hiring Tommy Boy.

I think you're a little harsh on him but if we can find the right guy to replace him

I would be alright with letting him go

He was named the Director of College and Pro Scouting in 2008,

Don’t let the door hit ya.

Far as I’m concerned we need everyone who vouched for those picks in 2008 gone.

Everyone.

OCC, the most likely candidate to replace Ciskowski is Todd Williams

He is currently Director of Football Administration and was formerly the Asst. Director of Player Personnel for the Cowboys.

Thank you

I’ve amended the post accordingly.
