New Rule #4: More cheerleader pics!
Last year, KD posted a list of 21 things he thought he was thinking about Dallas Cowboys type things. I'm stealing the idea for the third time now. Here are my 13 random thoughts about the Cowboys and stuff.
- America's Team? Sunday's Cowboys @ Giants game had the best overnight rating of any Sunday prime-time N.F.L. broadcast in the last 13 years. In fact, of the seven most watched Sunday Night football games only one, yep, only one, did not feature the Cowboys. Further evidence that the Cowboys are not America's team, of course.
- I'm usually a pretty big homer. I believe with an almost religious zeal that every single Cowboys draft pick could be a future Pro Bowler, much like half of the nation thinks Tim Tebow could be a future NFL quarterback. But my faith has been severely tested recently, a feeling I share with many Tebow fans. This year I watched 2010 fifth-round pick John Skelton lead Arizona to a 5-2 record, I watched 2011 fifth-rounder T.J. Yates compile a 2-3 record for Houston, and on Sunday, I witnessed 2008 seventh-round pick Matt Flynn throw for a franchise record 518 yards and 6 TDs for the Packers. So how much longer are we going to wait for our own fourth-rounder from 2009, Stephen McGee, to show us he can get it done in the NFL?
- Go figure: Seems like these days, there's a lot of chest-beating folks popping up and proudly declaring that they never saw the Cowboys as more than an 8-8 team this year, 9-7 at best. These are often the same people that are complaining the loudest that Rob Ryan 'only' improved last year's 31st ranked scoring defense to 16th this year.
A math challenge: Every time we talk about Dez Bryant and his production, somebody will bring up the argument that he is "constantly double- or sometimes even triple-teamed." Every time we talk about DeMarcus Ware's pass rushing, somebody will explain that Ware is "constantly double teamed." Every time we talk about Jay Ratliff and the absence of pressure up the middle, somebody will point out that Ratliff is "constantly double teamed". Notice a trend? Elementary school math tells me that if six defenders are covering three Cowboys, there should be a couple of Cowboys running around the field completely uncovered on every play. Can somebody please inform Jason Garrett about this?
Grammar Police: Watched a replay of the 44-yard reception on 3rd-and-7 in the 4th quarter by Victor Cruz against Orlando Scandrick on Sportscenter. Tim Hasselbeck says: "What a job by Cruz, catching the ball at its highest point." I hear this phrase all the time from sportscasters. My conclusion: they are either ignorant of basic physics or have not fully grasped the concept of a pronoun. At its highest point, a typical NFL downfield pass is easily 20 feet or more up in the air. Not even Olympic pole vaulters jump that high, at least not since Sergey Bubka last crossed 20 feet in 1994. On to the pronoun: Cruz caught the ball at his highest point. This is what it's come to, a German lecturing a broadcaster on English grammar.
Huh? I was watching a rerun of the Fiesta Bowl yesterday, when Oklahoma State had a touchdown reversed on replay in OT. After reviewing the score, the referee announced that the "runner was down at the half-yard line". I spent the rest of the broadcast looking at the playing field, but I simply could not find the half-yard line marked in chalk anywhere on the field.
Trade down and then trade up again. I'm not generally a proponent of trading down - unless you're trading down not because it gives you an extra pick per se, but because you could use that pick to trade back up again. There are many scenarios that could work, but here's one: The Cowboys trade their 14th (1,100 draft value points) for the 22nd and 54th (1,140). The Cowboys could then package their own 45th and the acquired 54th (810) to move into the 21st spot (800). The Cowboys could potentially hold the 21st and 22nd pick and - depending on which juniors declare over the next two weeks - could end up with two blue-chip prospects.
Draft Value Chart: With the new CBA and the rookie wage scale, is the old draft value chart still valid? Four months left to discuss this and many other draft-related issues in minute detail, interrupted only by the Combine and Free Agency.
New Rule #1: When a team offers you their entire draft to move up a few spots, you do it.
New Rule #2: The Cowboys will henceforth quit playing down to the level of their competition.
New Rule #3: Coaches that punt inside the opponent's territory with five yards or less to go on fourth down must wear a chicken suit for the rest of the week.
Finnegan: Just watched an NFL Films segment on Titans CB Cortland Finnegan. I used to think the guy was a scumbag, but he seems like a genuinely nice guy off the field. So I've changed my mind, that's the type of guy I want on my team. And he's a free agent. Jerry, do your thing.

I wonder sometimes why ? a) Some of the players that look great in preseason and are kept on the team, especially rookies rarely see real playing time to be evaluated. Other than special teams we saw very little of Albright at LB. He has to be faster than Brooking or Bradie. We saw a bit of Carter at the end of the season. b) Why we keep hearing about dumbing down the defense. I get a lot of Cleveland radio and they never spoke of that when Rob was there. The radio guys in Cleveland are tough, so if that was a problem they would have done a week of shows on it.
Love the rules.

I’d say, 4th and 4 or less at the opponents 40 or less. But then, I favor the conservative playcalling. Anybody who watched the 1:00 games saw what an edge not giving a F can do for teams…

Good call on Finnegan
He’s exactly the type of player this defense needs. He brings a lot of intensity and can get under the skin of receivers. Then draft a pass rusher with the 14th pick and all of sudden the defense isn’t terrible.

Don't know much about Finnegan
..but I’m pretty sure at this point in his career he can play man to man better than T New. You know it’s bad when a QB heaves a ball down field and you kind of already expect it to be completed for a monster gain, it just makes me angrier when it’s #41.
I’m not bashing Jenkins but isn’t it funny that every single time he makes a play he gets hurt? Lol :/ sigh, what a mediocre bunch

That was the first time ive seen scandrick actually look for the ball but it didnt really make a difference. this is something that enrages me during games is scandrick is often in a good position, couldnt be any closer to the guy without interfering but he lets the ball zip right past his face into the receivers hands.

he’ll be 28 next season. I didn’t watch the flaming thumbtacks play this year so I don’t know if he’s still got decent speed or if he’s lost a step. Obviously we can’t have any of the latter.
so maybe a short term 2-3 yr. deal would be good for us. I just don’t want to be tied to a ballooning contract when the guy hits 30 and runs like Charles Barkley plays golf. That’s the touch thing about CB’s you can never tell if they are going to suddenly lose it. Darryl Green never did, TNew seemed to lose his speed and confidence overnight. Maybe they are both part of the same Mojo.

Oh, and I'd argue that the new CBA makes the chart valid again.
It became invalid when high-first round contracts got so out of hand, but not that sanity has been restores to rookie contracts, much like what ruled in the late 80s, when the chart was created, I’d surmise that the chart more accurately reflects the values of the different picks.

I think so too, but I thought I’d put it out there as a trick question. I think the new CBA takes the draft value chart back much closer to the early 90s (when it was originally conceived) than it has ever been in the past couple of years.

Not at all here to troll or anything, but
a quick mention on the whole “America’s Team” thing (that along with the “Dream Team” are the two things that get me seething the most)…and this is in quick reference to that article that the Cowboys aren’t well liked….I’d say the ratings are really high on SNF w/ the Cowboys for two reasons:
1) Regardless of their inconsistency, the Cowboys are always a good matchup with whatever team.
2) A lot of people tune in, quite frankly, to try and see the Cowboys fail.
There’s a lot of Cowboys hate out there. And I’d take that as a compliment.

You second point is why they are THE most popluar team in the NFL. You either love them or hate them. There is no in between. We all know people love to see the Cowboys fail. The hate is pushed in our face everytime we turn on the t.v. or radio. There is no other team in the NFL that pushes the needle the way the cowboys do. The NFL, Fox, CBS, NBC, BSPN all know this. I personally dont give a crap about the “americas team” label. I think its hilarious how fans of other teams and people in the media keep bringing it up.
Anyway, OCC’s point (atleast I think) is that they are the most popluar team in the nfl and its not even close. Being popluar doesn’t mean that everybody likes you. Love em or hate em, either way everybody watches.

I can't disagree with that premise.
I’ve never seen so much dislike for another team by fans of teams like, idk, the Chiefs, Rams, w/e….teams that have no rivalry to the Cowboys…as much as I’ve seen the pure hatred thrown towards the Boys.
Fans and media pull out that America’s Team thing just cause it gives ‘em a target to focus all of their hate on, because lets be honest, if you’re a fan of the 31 other teams…to call yourself (whether you actually do or not doesn’t matter, because its attributed to you anyway), “America’s Team” is the height of douchiness in our eyes. Add to that, the smaller stuff like the hole in Cowboys Stadium was so “God could watch his favorite team” and Demarcus Ware saying that everybody wants to be a Cowboy just adds fuel to the fire lol.
As for the troll thing, had to throw that in there so people didn’t take me the wrong way haha. Thanks for the ’grats, Paul.

is 100% fact! Thats why they are struggling now because Jerry keeps the roof closed so much. He even punishes Jerry when he does open the roof for primetime games. I can actually hear God saying “oh, nooooowwwwww you want my help, well sorry, I’ll be in Denver today.”
And Ware was right. Everybody DOES want to be a Cowboy. EVERYBODY. Even you. You know you want to be Cowboy fan.

but make no mistake that both Tex Schram and Jerry have taken the title and run with it. The Cowboys organization didn’t give the name to themselves but they sure as heck ran with it.
I do remember that Tom Landry didn’t like it at all. He felt like it put a target on our back. He was right.

Really weird to read the part about Finnegan
On my hour long drive to work this morning I was thinking about the 14th pick and about our secondary. My first thought was that Morris Claiborne is the man. My second thought was that there is absolutely zero chance we can get our hands on him. So, after thinking about that I realized that there might not be another corner in the draft that I would want starting right away. So I drifted to Free Agency and the first name in my head was Courtland Finnegan. Then I though, “na, that guys a thug.” Then i came to my senses. He is a physical cb that likes to play man and would be a perfect fit in RR’s defense. Then to get to the office and see OCC mention him just confirms my thoughts. It is now written in the “stars”. He will be a Cowboy.

Finnegan is terrific, but he is also going to be very expensive.
I don’t think the Cowboys will be able to afford him and the ballance of T New’s contract when he gets cut this year, plus account for Jenkins new contract in future years. I think the Cowboys are more likely to sign a mid-level free agent (or two) for depth purposes and focus on improving the defense with early draft picks at corner, Dline, and OLB (not necessarily in that order).

It was dripping with sarcasm throughout….loved it.
I’m with you, this team has two pressing needs: top-notch talent at the CB and OLB/DE positions. Whether it’s through your “trade down, then up” scheme, or whether we get a guy like Finnegan through free agency and use our 1st on a pass rusher, it matters not. This is a completely different team with a revamped pass rush and a little secondary help. So many late-game heroics would no longer be necessary. I’m torn, though, because I really like a guy like David DeCastro in the 1st to finish JG’s OL project. Jerry Jones does a lot of things wrong, but the man can wheel and deal, and now’s the time for him to do it.

Laurent Robinson’s production was directly tied to defenses selling out to erase Dez leaving him single-covered by the #2 CB.
Defensively there wasn’t the talent to overcome. Despite Anthony Spencer only being singled up against RTs and TEs all season, the only team he was able to exploit this against was the Dolphins and terrible Marc Colombo.
There’s also a need for better ILB and safety blitzes up the middle. Efforts to slow down Ratliff should open up the middle to the kinds of blitzes and stunts that had such an amazing effect at shutting down the Cowboys this year. Unfortunately, Sean Lee, Gerald Sensabaugh, Abram Elam, Keith Brooking, and Bradie James combined for zero sacks this year. Once you took out Ratliff there was nothing for a QB to fear from the middle of the Cowboys defense.

Is the defense really so much worse than the offense?
It’s interesting that everyone is slamming the D, but the offense was the bigger letdown, in my opinion. For all the star power, they were no more effective at scoring than the defense was at stopping teams from scoring. In a lot of those late game meltdowns, how many points was the offense putting on the board? Or for that matter, how often were they sustaining drives? We were 16th in scoring defense and 15th in scoring offense. Given the respective talent levels, which is the bigger disappointment? And given the current NFL landscape, which is more important to improve?

Let's go down the list:
Jets loss – more on the offense or the defense? I think the offense, but let’s agree to call it even and add in the special teams.
Lions loss – offense – they allow the other team back into the game by giving up 14 points, then score 0 of their own in the 4th quarter
Patriots loss – offense – the D holds one of the highest scoring offenses in the league to only 20 points. The O only scores 16 against one of the most porous defenses in the league (much worse than ours), including only 6 points in the second half.
Philadelphia loss – both units were awful
Arizona loss – we can call it even, but I think the offense. Which is worse, allowing a big play in overtime for a total of 19 points, or only scoring 13 points and the debacle at the end of regulation? 3 points in second half, 0 in 4th quarter.
Giants loss – defense – you can’t allow 37 points and win on a regular basis. Luckily or unluckily, we typically only allow that type of scoring to the Giants and Eagles.
Eagles loss – offense – The defense held one of the top scoring teams to only 20 points, while the offense managed one garbage time TD.
Giants loss – both – Too many points allowed, not enough points scored. Blown opportunities in all areas.

I dont understand why he got zero playing time against a meaningless eagles game, where he could have gotten some much needed reps, but plays in a few packages in the biggest game of the year.
If you watch the game again, D-Ware was not doubled team as much as everyone thinks he was.

and the Eagles’ Jason Peters is quietly been very very good. I think this marks the 3rd season where he’s effectively shut down Ware.

As for the Bruce Carter comment. December 10th marked the 1 year anniversary date of when he tore his acl. It takes almost a full year before you get back to 100%. Compile that with being a rookie and not being able to practice football until november. He will be fine.
I have to remind myself that not everybody saw him play for 4 years like I did while he was at UNC. He will pan out and you guys will him. I am very very confident of this. Even though that is just my opinion and it means absolutely nothing.

I dont understand why he didn’t start the game with the hurry up, considering the over-aggressive giant’s d-line, a new left guard, and how our o-line usually gets manhandled in big games. If he had started the game like he did in the 2nd half, might be a different story.

And i for one would love to hear it myself. Anytime they went “hurry up” this season it seems like it produced good results.

I think Finnegan would be a perfect fit in RR defense.
But what about Brandon Carr, he’s only 26 and may flow under the radar if he tests the market. I’ll keep an eye on him and Calais Campbell this offseason.

Backup QB dilemma
Not sure what everyone else thinks about McGee, but I think he is in a tough spot. Regardless of how good he is now or will be in the near future, he will be nothing more than an insurance policy in Dallas behind Romo, or a bargaining chip for trade. The best case for the Cowboys might have been that he followed the Kevin Kolb path, spent a couple years in the league developing, got into a few games where he looked good, then have Cowboys flip him to a needy team for a high pick or needed upgrade elsewhere. By the time McGee was drafted, Romo was a 3 year starter that was 28 years old who was well on his way up in the league. In a scenario like this, the only way he was going to get any significant playing time was if there was a major injury to Romo, and they had already signed Kitna for that duty. It is rare that a team takes a QB anywhere in the draft and has that pick play significant time or supplant the incumbent during the span of their first NFL contract when they already have a QB of Romo’s age and caliber starting. I don’t think he has been horrible to date, but he seems to turn quickly to his check down options on passes and doesn’t appear to have a lot of full-time starting potential.
