Random Things About The Dallas Cowboys - Senior Bowl Week

Darren Abate - AP

Jerry Jones loves the Senior Bowl. There's college talent to evaluate, lots of microphones around to talk into, and he doesn't have to wear a tie!

I don't know if it is because I now look for things I can write about concerning the Dallas Cowboys, but I had never noticed before how much was going on during the week of the Senior Bowl. Here are some brief items that caught my eye this week.

First, a clarification from an earlier post of mine. I wrote about the offseason conditioning and training for the team. At the time, I put in this information about what the players could do outside of the OTA and minicamps, based on what I thought were the rules under the CBA.

But the players are not allowed to workout at the team facility or work with the S&C coaches if they pass the "exit" physical at the end of the season. If they do not pass it, they are allowed to continue in a rehab program at the team facility under team supervision.

Our resident football insider Birddog26 has provided some clarification of the rules. It turns out that under the CBA all the players can use the team facilities, they just cannot work with any coaches or trainers. That sounds to me like a situation that is ripe for some cheating, since the facilities they can use include the video facilities as well as the weight and training areas. Can you imagine Tony in there looking at video of coverages, and Jason walking by and not getting into a little "casual" conversation about it? But that's just me. Anyway, I wanted to make sure that the information going out was as current and correct as we can make it.

But wait, there's more! Just pay additional shipping and handling, and follow past the jump.

Star-divide

Jason Garrett talked a little about what kind of players he is looking for in Mobile.

"In general, you want smart, tough football players who have a passion for playing," Garrett said. "That's something you want from every guy, regardless of what their position is."

He goes on to talk about the different kinds of smart involved.

"You can factor in instinct, and test scores are certainly part of that. But also a feel for how you play the game is part of that, and that varies from position to position."

This is all certainly consistent with his overall concept of the Right Kind of Guy.

Meanwhile, Jerry Jones is talking. And talking. For better or for worse, the owner and general manager loves the spotlight. Sometimes he says way too much, or the wrong thing. But he also gives a lot of insight into what the thinking of the staff is. If you missed the link elsewhere, here is an interview he had with the NFL Channel guys.

Another topic he talked about this week was the idea that Bruce Carter could have the same kind of sophomore season that Sean Lee had.

"I think that's a jump or presumptuous," Jones said. "It was amazing what Bruce Carter was able to do relative to the time you assess when you have that kind of injury. He was outstanding in his rehab. He was really used with the speed and skill on special teams, he made some good plays for us, did some things out there a lot of normal players can't do. If he can carry that over, which he should be able to do, to defense he should make a good defender for us."

In another fine example of Jerryspeak, he seems to say two completely opposite things there, opening with the disclaimer that you shouldn't jump to conclusions, and then listing all the reasons maybe you should.

In still another interview, Jerry talks about how he likes both Jason Garrett's youth as a head coach and Tony Romo's experience as a starting quarterback. And he also drops a bit of a hint about what the team may intend to do.

"I think we'll coordinate that with what I do, we do, in personnel, and that way we've got a chance to get better. But it'll be a multi-pronged approach."

That certainly fits the idea of going after both free agents and the right draft picks to address the team's issues.

The last thing needs a bit of a set up. I have always had a bit of the fanboy in me, and though I don't read many comic books anymore (for crying out loud, have you seen how much they charge for those things now?), I still have a few old favorites stuck in a box in my closet. And some of the ones I really enjoyed were the alternate universe things, like what if Bruce Wayne had been the one to get the Green Lantern's power ring? Or what if baby Kal-El had been found by Tom and Martha Wayne, and Batman had wound up with Superman's powers? You know, just crazy ideas to mix things up a bit.

So I had to read this little piece about the idea of . . . well, this.

In case it has slipped everyones minds, if (Peyton Manning) doesn't get his wish to stay in Indy, he wants to play for a team that has a chance to make it to the Superbowl within the 2-3 year window he has to work with.
BING!!! The Dallas Cowboys!!!

Now, I don't for a minute think that this would ever happen. It would mean that Tony would be traded, and even though that could mean a real draft pick bonanza that could be used to shore up the holes the team has, I just do not see that happening. But it is a weirdly entertaining idea. Imagine, as this guy does, the Forehead getting to play little brother Dumb Face twice a year. (OK, OK, I'm sorry for calling Eli Manning Dumb Face, but sometimes I go for the cheap laugh.) And of course the Colts would have to let Peyton go right after negotiating his mega contract.

I just figured this is some strange, not very knowledgeable fellow enjoying a nice little daydream (I mean, he even spelled it "Payton" in the original, which I corrected for him). And then I read this about Peyton and the Colts' Jim Irsay.

Shortly after introducing Chuck Pagano as Indianapolis' new coach, the team owner responded to the comments Manning made earlier this week by referring to the only four-time league MVP as a "politician."

Now, we can get rude and even a bit nasty around here - but we never, ever stoop to the level of calling someone as insulting as a "politician"! BTB has standards, after all! I am nervous about getting chewed out just for putting that quote here.

After dropping the "P" word again, and mentioning a reference by Irsay to how there is a certain amount of walking on eggshells in Indy because of the superstar quarterback, the article gets down to the real nub of the matter.

The Colts, who also have the No. 1 pick in this year's draft and could take Andrew Luck as their quarterback of the future, also have to decide whether to pay Manning a $28 million by March 8 or risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent.

It's these kinds of things that sometimes make you go "Hmmmmm".

But I don't see any real chance of Manning coming to Dallas. I think the team has invested too much in Tony Romo, and would shy away from going with a player who has the possible health issues and the age Manning brings to the table. What I do see is a franchise owner setting up a really ugly situation for the end of the career of one of the truly great players in NFL history. And I wonder just what kind of cap impact cutting Peyton loose would have? At the rate things seem to be deteriorating with the Colts, it may come down to that.

Oh, well, at least Indy doesn't have to put up with an owner/general manager the way we do. We all know that is much worse, right?

the manning thing wouldn't do any good

As good as Payton is, Tony is probably similar in ability at this point in their careers. Not to mention the injury risk with Peyton. At this point, I’d rather have Romo. The problem with this team is not QB.

Can't bring an older, less mobile guy in here and expect

anything but physical punishment to Manning’s body. Unless they really do manage to significantly improve this line, even as great as Manning is, he couldn’t play his game here.

A team like SF would be ideal because they need just a small boost to be really, really good. LAst year I would have said the Vikes, but they suddenly look really old on both sides of the ball. The Skins might be another really good fit given their defensive talent, but they need a WR upgrade.

Can Peyton play CB? Can he rush the passer?

Then what would be the point? Until the defense is fixed, it doesn’t matter who the QB is. And when it does get fixed, Romo is capable of getting us where we need to go (and he’s younger and healthier than Peyton).

Arizona has to be the odds-on favorite for Peyton in my opinion. He gets an easy road to the Playoffs in the NFC West (yes, I know SF is there. Let’s see Year 2 before we call them a perennial powerhouse). He also has 4 Division games in a dome (3 in ARI, 1 in STL), 1 in SF (generally beautiful weather), and 1 in SEA (I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a snow game there). Pretty ideal environment for him in that regard. And he also gets some WR named Larry Fitzgerald. He’s pretty good I hear. And not a headache like Brandon Marshall or Santonio Holmes.

As much as I would love to see Peyton vs. Eli 2x/yr (with Peyton on the Redskins, of course) or Peyton vs. Brady 2x/yr (on the Jets or Dolphins), I think that he’ll end up deciding to go to Arizona.

I wouldn't rule out SF, Alex Smith is a FA and I'd take Payton over him in a sec.
If Peyton is a free agent

Why the hell would he want tomplay om a team with crappy receivers such as Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams, and Ted Ginn Jr?

Arizona’s got a nice young team that just needs a QB. Plus Larry Fitzgerald is there, and they play in a climate comtrolled dome. The Mnning tomSF is a bunch of hogwash. The 49ers will not break the bank and kill their cap by going after a 36 year old QB, they’ll get better on offense with the draft, and if they fall back to earth in 2012, they can draft a potential franchise QB in 2013, or get Colin Kaepernick up to speed.

Alex Smith wasn't the reason they lost to the Giants...

better WR’s for Alex to throw too, and a punt return guy that actually holds onto the ball….they will resign Alex Smith.

Peyton Manning

If this was pre-nck injury, I’d be a fool not tomconsider it, however, Jerry amd Co, well mainly Kerry, would be prudent to continue to build a team that Romo can guide to a SB before his career ends. we have too many holes on the roster, and Manning won’t be able to cover them up. Besides, QB as Jerry Jones said, is not a postion needing much improvement. That signals to me the Cowboys are looking for a backup who doesn’t look like a deer in headlights, cough, Steven Mcgee, cough.

damnit Ipad

Tom=to; Kerry= Jerry

haha you must have ticked off the machine overlords

sometime in the past few days. What did you say to OCC?

look how many holes Manning covered up in Indy lol.

that was a 12 win team the last decade & they barely won 2 without him. that says a lot about Paytons skills & if there GM had actually drafted some decent players its no telling how good the Colts could’ve been over the last decade. Payton carried that organization & as much as i cant stand the Colts i love to watch Payton on the field.
if it wasnt for Manning i dont think mr.Polian would’ve had a job very long

It was an Organizational Decision-under Polian's regime

To build a juggernaut offense around Peyton and go with fast, hard hitting, undersized defense that could take over games late once the offense built up a big lead early.

I’d call the Manning era a success under that strategy, winning over 100+ games in his time, making the playoffs 12 times in 14 seasons, reaching 2 SBs and winning 1.

Stephen McGee just needs some actual playing time....I think he does well with what he is asked to do...

did he really have a chance that second game against Philly?…was the rest of the team playing like it mattered?….I think they bring Moore once he’s released by the phins to compete with McGee for the backup spot tho….familiar with him and he has proven himself at least capable starting for a few games if something happens to Romo. Miami wants to go with Flynn at QB so I hear….

well said - he had no practice reps and the only time he did he played against scrubs and still we gave up sacks

He was able to get some help working with Wilson and Kitna but he needs 1st team reps to show us what he can do. Romo is 32 and always gets injured in even years since ’08, he was playing injured a lot this year so Jones-Garrett know that McGee may have to step in for at least a game or 2.

with the playoffs one the line it was evident they didn't trust McGee with limited experience....

and with Kitna out with his back it forced Romo to play thru his injuries….I wish that they had trusted McGee a little more and given him some snaps especially when Romo was playing with the rib injury….we would have found out more about him if he had gotten decent snaps with the regulars….

McGee sucks, he was the #2 qb it's his job to be ready with few practice reps

He’s been here in the same offense for 3 years, he should know it with out needing all the practice reps. He obviously wasn’t ready to play. He plays it safe, checks it down, missing wide open receivers because he’s to scared or to dumb to recognize the coverage. Why would year 4 be different than year 3. Time to move on.

McGee does the same thing over and over.

He doesn’t move the ball, he takes way to much time to read the defense. Since he can’t read the defense he checks it down and we punt. Every possesion is the same. He has not developed, time to move on. He’s shown absolutely nothing to say he’s ready for a back up spot in the 3 years he’s been here.
Why would the phins release Matt Moore?

Thank you

I think all McGee suporters either love special olympics option QBs turned scared passers, bor they’re Aggie homers, or they’re actually believe he could be Tony 2.0

Ipad grammar fail again
It's those same rose colored glassed folks

The same bunch that had Jason Williams in the probowl.

I can just see Raf writing about how we just don’t know football, and haven’t watch McGee in person to see how he is the next Peyton Manning.

Jason Williams?...who?..oh yeah the 2nd round pick from 2009 who was a hell of an athlete but had zero in the way of football instincts...
not nit picking but Williams was a 3rd or 4th round pick

remember that was the draft Jerry traded the farm for Roy Williams

And recieved manure in return.
that was the draft Jerry traded the farm for Roy Williams

Williams was a 3rd rounder. Then we got the big fat tackle Brewster. Awesome talent additions for the Cowboys.

williams was a second round....number 5 in the 2nd....brewster was the 3rd rounder...

sorry mensa…just looking at the hard copy for that year….

my mistake....ol nasty corrected me....
Jason williams was selected with the 5th pick in the second round of the 2009 draft

sorry..not nitpicking but this is per the hardcopy of the Sporting News 2009 season preview…..just makes it worse….

Jason williams pick and rd found in the link

He was a 3rd pick at the 5th spot http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/jason-williams?id=89818

NFL.com

I remember this one vividly because i couldnt believe we waited til the third rd to choose a player, the reason why, cause nobody would crack the Starting lineup that coming season,,,,, for the love of phil

i stand corrected....thank you

i think i might have been sure there was no way we would wait til the 3rd round to take anybody……

they have matt flynn following the GB coach to Miami

and I just know what I’ve seen in McGee….for all those that think he can’t play he has proven he can drive this team when it counts and when he’s given a chance……that said i’m not a homer and do think that if someone like Matt Moore is available he would provide a better option as the backup….

I would guess you are refering to the game against the eagles last year.

Remember, that was against the eagles backups. It was a glorified preseason game. Except, McGee was playing with the starters.

there was also the game against the Cardinals where he had to come back from 2 td's down becuz of Kitna's ints that were returned for tds..

in preseason wasn’t he also the highest rated passer in the league as far as backups went?…he has a feel for the clutch and he had to grow into being a nfl qb the old fashioned way….qb’s used to sit on the bench for a number of years before they were deemed ready to play….with the new cba and rookie cap we way see the league revert back to that way of thinking instead of tossing rookie qb’s to the wolves, ruining otherwise promising careers as well as wasting a ton of money becuz you have to play the guy who is being payed what peyton manning is making his rookie year….

he's not a rookie anymore. he's going into his 4th year with very little development to show for it.

Jerry apparently doesn’t have faith in him. he’s already talked veteran back up. and don’t forget they put in a claim for orton. IMHO 3rd string is for development not 4 year washouts.

McGee is not a good player

After 3 years, our project of turning an option QB into a pass thrower has been a worthless exercise. we should have taken the kid from TTU.

McGee, playing with starters, struggled in the glorfied preseason game that was 2010 Week 17 against Eagles backups. Dallas barely won that game, no thanks to Footsteps.

In his relief duty against the Eagles in 2011, he could only manufacture a garbage time TD. Yeah, he can really move the ball. Screw him, he sucks.

MCGEE has 0 business being anything in the NFL beyond a 3rd String QB. Anyone who thinks Dallas will go into the the season with two QBs, and McGee as one of those two, has zero clue about football. Get over it. He’s not a starter in waiting, he flashed zero promise and zero potential in College, he’s got 3rd string emergency QB written all
over him.

The reason he has a decent passer rating in the pre-season, is because he gets mop up duty against guys who will not make a roster or become practice squad players. He’s playing against 3rd and 4th stringers. How hard is that to understand?

good players do well when there #s called (just like Romo did).

McGee doesn’t do a lot of things well & i dont see anything special about him to keep around. he’s not even up to par with Andys Old Kolb.

If McGee sees the field in 2012 for extended time

you can bank on drafting a QB in the first rd of the 2013 draft.

Peyton to the Redskins

I have heard rumblings that Shanahan would love to have an experienced quarterback like Peyton take over in Washington. “The Mastermind” could relive those days in Denver before Elway retired.

Given the strength of Washington’s defense, the emergence of Roy Helu as a capable running back, and the fact that the Redskins would still have a high first round pick to obtain help for Peyton, the Redskins could make a huge jump in 2012.

Add that this is a good free agent crop of wide receivers, there are quality interior offensive linemen that will be unrestricted free agents, and that there is a cornerback or two that could be bought by Danny, and Washington could easily reclaim their title as off-season champions.

Oh yeah, don’t forget that Snyder is not shy about spending money on veterans, and Shanahan needs to win soon or face the humiliation of getting canned. Peyton Manning to Washington makes a lot of sense for all involved.

Imagine the NFC East next season…oy vay!

i'm not sure i could handle the schedule...playing manning 4 times a year or more.....
meant as a reply to Scarlet...
Got it.

Vick x2, Eli x2. Peyton x2.

Yeah, that would stink.

Imagine Davis and Cooley with Peyton at the helm. Look at what Peyton did with Dallas Clark.

With Peyton in Washington, getting to the playoffs would truly become a Herculean task.

they still have noone blocking for him and they need more than jabar gaffney catching...

we improve the secondary and the pass rush numbers will improve….just too often the ball was off becuz of poor coverage by the secondary that allowed the pass to be thrown…course not calling holding penalties on Ware when he’s tackled by the oline doesn’t help matters much either….

improving the secondary starts up front with pressure/pass rush

most QBs in this era with the rules favoring the offense have taken a toll on great Cbs. a good comparision is the Jets (great secondary & no pass rush) compared to the Giants (great pass rush & barely average secondary)
the Giants win that game all day long & even the best secondarys cant stop Wrs very long so imo its all about the pass rush/front 7.
this defense wont improve until Ware gets help & they find another legit NT/DE that can push the middle of the pocket.

Historically Peyton as always had problems against 3-4 defenses
Peyton has not been cleared medically and will have to consider the risk of playing after, what is this, his third surgical procedure on his neck.

Seems as if the prudent thing for him to do is to consider gracefully retiring rather than risk serious injury. The Colts must draft Luck. They would be the dumbest team on the face of the earth if they opted not to. 28mil is a lot of coin for a QB who may not be able to play. How can you justify that kind of dough and the cost of the top pick in the draft.

I think Peyton might very well be embarassed at the offers in FA. I certainly wouldn’t sign him to a big contract with that injury he sustained to his neck.

Dr. pfloyd1

As you probably know, a single level fusion to fix an unsuccessful discectomy revision is hardly that dangerous. Adjacent level instability occurs at a rate of approximately 3% per year following the fusion (Ghiselli, et al.). That means that a problem at an adjacent level has about a 3% chance of occuring in 2012, 6% chance in 2013, and 9% chance of happening in 2014.

In other words, Peyton has greater than a 90% chance of not having a problem for three seasons. The greater issue with Peyton is the regeneration of the nerve through his throwing arm. Generally, there is a three month window for surgery to relieve mechanical pressure on a peripheral nerve. Manning had the revision by the surgeon in L.A. immediately after the season (February). Peyton did not have his fusion until August: about 6 months after the second discectomy that failed to relieve the pressure on the peripheral nerve.

Chances are that Peyton needs several years to regain most of the strength he had in his throwing arm prior to the onset of symptoms from his cervical derangement. Since the Colts will not be able to work with him formally until after the March 8th deadline, nobody except Peyton will know if his arm has regained enough strength to be effective again.

wow....well put..but the end result is the same....Peyton is no longer worth the money

course we would all have to hear for the next couple of years from his daddy how his boy was released too early and that indy could still be competitive if was playing….

I see and understand your point, but to my knowledge the nerve damage was directly due to the disc problem.

Hence my comments about the three surgeries. No matter how you portray it, Peyton’s a high risk for 28mil or a big FA contrat. How did you know that I was a physician SO?

Haven't you said you were before?
Well said Pfloyd

These are the terms of Peyton Manning’s Contract:
5 yrs $90 Million, with $54million guaranteed

This is how the guaranteed money works:
1) $20 Million Signing Bonus
2) 2011 Salary: is a base salary of $3.4 million +$3millon roster bonus.
3) (If Manning is on the roster as of March 8th 2012): $7 million +$28 million dollar roster bonus-therefore if he’s not cut by the March 8th deadline, the Colts are on the hook for that entire $54.4 million.

As of right now the Colts have paid Peyton Manning a grand total of $23 million, $7 million of which counted towards their salary cap already, $16 million outstanding. Starting in 2012, the Colts must count that outstanding $16million (of money already paid) towards their salary cap: if the Colts release or trade him, they take an $8 million cap hit for 2012 & 2013. NOW, this is important, if Manning is on the roster as of March 8th, that $28 million dollar bonus money not only becomes due to Peyton, but that raises the Colts outstanding cap hit to $44 million dollars: not only would a trade or out right release become impossible, they’d have to take a cap hit of $11 millon in 2012 (1/5 the 20million + 1/4 the 28 million); $11million in 2013, $11 million in 2014, $11million in 2015.

Based on that break down, the earliest they Colts could cut him without having to pay more than $11 million in dead cap money would be 2014. Thus, it is my conclusion, it is in the Colts’ financial and competitive interests both longterm and short term, that they cut Peyton before his $28million dollar roster bonus vests.

Now I know some of you feel they aren’t taking care of their superstar by doing him this way, however, the Colts took care of Peyton Manning in 2011 by leaving him on their roster at the start of the season, meaning he was entitled to that $20 million dollar roster bonus for this past season. Thus, in 2011 Peyton earned $26 million dollars to wear a baseball cap and cheer on Curtis Painter. The Colts didn’t have to leave Manning on their roster at that start of the season. If you ask me, they did right by him in 2011, now they need to do right for their franchise moving forward.

I mean as of today, the Colts have already paid $26.4 million dollars.

There was a typo up there in one paragraph.

wow. just. wow.
200 mil in the bank won't do you any good if you are cripple the rest of your life
It would be nice to hear some news about the prospect of drafting Peter Konz if DeCastro is not available for Cowboys

I think there might be truth to us trying to move up for Claiborne but if we draft DE, LOB or OG 1st we might as well look at drafting Konz and moving Costa to OG. I think Dockery and Kosier will be gone so that leaves Holland to groom Arkin or Nagy. Also got KK to add some depth at either C or OG. It will be interesting to see how NFL-ready Arkin and Costa will be. 2 of those spots have to go to young guys and I just wonder how high we draft OT, Arkin can also play there.

Konz would be nice, but 14 is too early, and he won't be there in the second round
i prefer Ben Jones from UGA

no history of injuries and has a nasty temperment to boot

Most likely scenario

Dallas offers Nicks a 7 yr, $63 million contract w/ a 33.5 mil bonus (or somewhere in that neighborhood). They structure the contract so that the bonus is paid for in the 1st 4 years of the contract.

With the 1st pick in the draft, they obtain the best pash rushing 3-4 OLB that’s available (probably Ingram or Upshaw). If they don’t go that way, then I’d expect they trade down as there probably won’t be any CBs or 3-4 DEs worth taking at 14 – except if Brockers has a great combine and interview.

With the 2nd pick, they obtain that CB or FS that is needed (probably Markelle Martin or Stephen Gilmore or Chase Minnifield).

3rd pick is a crap shoot. This is actually the one pick that might be used in a trade up from 14 if that occurs. If not, there are a TON of options which make sense from Massaquoi to Ben Jones to Burfict to Vinny Curry. The 3rd round pick in this years draft should be the HIGH value pick in terms of low risk for high potential award.

Please no third round trade up.

As referenced in one of the CowboysNation recent articles, the 91st pick for the Dez Bryant trade up cost them Navarro Bowman.

Mostly likely scenario to me is a FA C.

That would allow us a lot more $ in FA to get a decent CB or a pass rusher. Nick is to pricey.

I really like Jones too.
they just give Kosier a new deal last season that wouldn't make sense to cut him.

Kosier was solid & i think his problems were more bc of changing positions & also playing with 2 rookies on each side.
i think bringing in a vet Guard or Center & findout what they have in nagy, Costa, Arkin, Killer K or another mid to late round draft pick. Callahan has said he loved the way things worked out with the Jets OL when they aquired Fanica to pla between Fergeson & Mangold.

don't forget the injury to his foot made it extremely difficult to push off of...

for him to play thru that showed more than a fair amount of toughness and was an example to the younger o line how there is a difference between hurt and injured…..

Didn't he tear his MCL at the end of the year?
What do you think we would actually get for Romo?

Maybe a late first and a late third? I don’t think he has that much trade value, and definitely not enough to get such an older, injured player to replace him. Because then we would also have to push the search for the next franchise QB to the front of the line, rather than having 2 or 3 years.

just stop
Problem?
He's just saying that isn't going to happen.

He’s right.

Okay...

But isn’t that what it said in the article? That it won’t happen, but it’s interesting to think about? I have this weird thing that I do on rare occasions where I will attempt to discuss the article. Sue me.

Looks at what people paid for Palmer and Kolb.

Romo is better than either, thus his price would be higher.

just think

if KOlb is worth Cromartie and a 2nd rounder

Romo has to be worth say Revis and a First?……

that would be tempting…….

Not so Random Thoughts about this Offseason

1. You have to look deeper into the draft and free agent process — I’m thinking that most of the Cowboys’ targets in FA are going to be the spots where the draft is weakest.

2. There will be growth from within — A full offseason is very key. I’m hoping Robinson is resigned and Fiametta will be back. And it seems everyone soured on the Yuglies, I’m excited to see Arkin and Nagy next season.

3. DeCastro won’t be the pick, unless we don’t get Hicks — It’s one or the other, not both. That 14th pick will be used on a pass rusher, I want Melvin Ingram.

4. Free Agent Pickups — Truth be told, I don’t want to make any splash signings, unless Calais Campbell isn’t franchised. Use that reported $20 mil, plus some after Newman is cut, to get: a solid C (Myers or Saturday), starting-worthy S (Adams or Griffin), young vet CB (Carr or Thomas), backup QB (Hill or Orton), true NT (Franklin or Bryant), and lastly a guard that Callahan has green lighted and wants. If it’s Hicks, cross the C’s and CB’s I listed off the list. I hope he can see something to mold in a cheaper option (Connelly or Samson).

5. This draft can be a great experience for a Cowboys fan — It’s deep at our need positions, which means we should get excellent value. I keep wishing for Ingram, Fleming, Zeitler, and Heyward to be the 1st 4 picks. Plus, I think the Browns would be great trade down partners if Richardson is still there. I’m not budging for less than a swap of 2nd’s and their 3rd though.

6. Rob Ryan will control the draft — His stamp will be all over this draft, with a sprinkle of Callahan and Garrett. The only offensive positions I can see the Cowboys having any kind of interest in are G, C, QB, and TE, and the last two are late round options.

7. McGee will have a serious challenge for a roster spot — Garrett will bring someone in to groom, and there will be 3 QB’s on the roster. So McGee better step his game up or hit the road.

OH and stop with the PEYTON Manning to Dallas crap

I’d much rather have Romo at this point.

Scandrick

I am thinking with the contract we just paid him he will be given a run for the starting RCB job in camp, I also think Saturday would be a good FA pick up, if we cut Kosier, Holland & Dockery he will bring much needed experience to the O/L and could help with the grooming of Kowlaski, Nagay or Cost to to be the long term Center.

This is the key to me...
2. There will be growth from within — A full offseason is very key. I’m hoping Robinson is resigned and Fiametta will be back. And it seems everyone soured on the Yuglies, I’m excited to see Arkin and Nagy next season.

The draft will tell us something about what they think of their recent in house prospects.

is why you guys won’t win a Superbowl, it’s that simple, until he gets a real Gm you are doomed.

The franchise has won 3

since he became owner and GM. It’s that simple.

+3 and hopefully soon +4
not to back up a Giants fan but Jerry hasn't won much since the salary cap started.

Jerry presalary cap was great & Jimmy Johnson was a great coach that got everything out of his players. it was the prefect marriage.
hopefully Jerry & Garrett can find that same magic but as of right now Dallas has been on a roller coaster (not just the Romo Coaster).

I think Manning is finished, his neck will never be the same

If he’s smart he’ll retire and get a broadcasting job.

Broadcasting, plus do commercials from here on out, with the occasional SNL hosting gig. The guy is naturally funny
yup him and JT made a great duo.
i cant see Manning in a booth lol.

he’s more of a hands on type guy & if it wasn’t coaching (college maybe?) then i expect to see him pushing the Manning academy full strength. all the Mannings are very active with kids & love to be involved charity work from there.
i’m still not counting Manning out bc he’s a very rare player & those guys have beaten the odds there whole life. i also hate to see that generation of the NFL to come to a close. the Mannings are class acts & while i cheer against them when the Cowboys are involved i dont think the NFL will be better without P.Manning on sundays.
with that said i dont see Manning coming to the NFC East.

Mannings great but he would die here

With our swiss cheese oline manning might literally die @ jerry world. Just imagine JPP around one end, Jason “i.wish I had DWARE’s ability” Tuck and Chris " 360 degree vision" canty meet @ manning all at the same time and BOOOOOOOOOOOOm! When the dust clears mannings fusion will be ruined and is head would be laying right on the star. So I guess i’m not in favor if giving the NYG the
pleasure of killing one of our qbs.

Matt Moore

Someone mentioned this above and I think it has some legs. If the Cowboys made a play for Orton why not Moore from Miami? He nearly ruined my thanksgiving, and posted impresssive wins over a couple teams who put us away (NYJ and ARZ.) He’d be a servicable back-up in the event Romo gets laid out and its not entirely out of the question [like the Peyton to Dallas fantasy floating about] since MIA is a top player for Matt Flynn with the the new HC coming in from GB as well.

Think about, let it marinate, its not awful.. (a la Stephen McGee)

I can see that.

I just think it is time to **** or get off the pot with McGee. He (McGee) looks tentative and scared out there, and those are the two worst qualities to have in a NFL quarterback.

i agree with M.Moore over McGee anyday & then draft another project with more upside.

honeslly i think Moore is better then most give credit & if you look at his last 6 or 7(?) games with the Dolphins he put up some decent numbers.
i hold nothing he did against him that happened in Carolina. that place was a crap hole & even though they got Mr Newton they still only won (4?) games. Ron Rivera is a good coach & will change things around on defense & the OC in Carolina shud get some kind of award with the job he did with Newton & how he used his skills to fit the scheme.

That was the original thinking

So it makes sense. Moore was going to the practice squad, and got snatched up on waivers.

the senior bowl is a great place to find hungry young coaches.

i’d like to see Dallas find a new QB coach & fill in some of the lesser know jobs with young, smart, hungery guys that understand the translation from college to the NFL.
how do they pick the coaches from the senior bowl? i’d like to see Dallas get a chance to scout up close like Washington or the Vikings have with this opportunity.

I think there is a rotation like who plays in the HOF game each year
The NFL decides who coaches the Senior Bowl

Towards the end of the season the League offices start talking with Owners who have the worst records to see who can coach. It is a good indication of who will still have their HC and most of the staff intact after the season.

No Contact with Trainers ?

WTF ? Can someone explain to me why the NFL and its players seem to be emulating the idiotic style rules of the NCAA ? Are NFL players not adults ? Are they not capable of making informed decisions about what advice they should and should not take from team coaches and trainers ? Is there some epidemic of players becoming injured or otherwise harmed from offseason contact with coaches and trainers that I’m not aware of ?

That kind of rule makes NO SENSE at all.

I think it's so that teams can't quietly bypass rules on practices

So my guess is that the NFLPA wants it that way
