There's always plenty of interwebby fun to be had when talking about the Dallas Cowboys! Let's dive into Cowboys Pick Six, what appears to be my newest recurring post. Six of the top storylines occupying the minds of Dallas Cowboys fans at the moment.
Salary Cap Won't Be Issue For Cowboys: ESPN Dallas | Interesting confirmation that the Cowboys could have as much as $20 million to spend this offseason. With the retirement of Jon Kitna, the Cowboys have about $12.6 million in cap space, right now, based on last year's cap total. This already takes into account the 'dead money' from last season's salary purge. We'll get into this in much greater detail, but with the 14th pick in the draft, Dallas is looking at spending between $5m and $7m on rookies (estimate based on 2011 #14 pick counting $2m against cap). BTB's Tom Ryle did a great piece on the Cowboys free agent situation here, which is headlined by Laurent Robinson and maybe a desire to sign Martellus Bennett, Tony Fiammetta and/or Anthony Spencer. Give or take, that could bring the available money pool down to about $3 million.
However Dallas also has bullets left to fire. They could save up to $6 million releasing Terence Newman and also another $12 million reworking the deal of DeMarcus Ware and shifting money within the Orlando Scandrick and Doug Free deals. That bumps them up to about $20 milly, with Robinson in fold, a mid-first round draft pick and optimism right around the corner. Maybe literally.
PFF Wide Receiver Drop Rates For 2011: Pro Football Focus | For all the negative press he's been getting from (allegedly) getting into an altercation with rapper Lil' Wayne and his colorful jeggings, Dez Bryant deserves his accolades too. He ranked second amongst all NFL receiver's with more than 50 catchable balls (receptions added to drops) with a 1.56% drop rate. 63 receptions, one drop. In 2010, Dez was second on the team to Jason Witten, with a 6.25% (3 drops and 45 catches). 108 catches, only four drops over two seasons with no full offseason. Three cheers for Rabble's article.
The scrap was real, the opposition is undetermined, and so is the potential. Oh, and if you didn't understand the earlier reference, google Lil Wayne's Jeggings to see the hip-hop star's highly questionable taste in "mens" pants.

Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick Arrested On Marijuana Charge: NBC DFW | This is news that most of you know already, but I'll be touching on it on the next Krunchtime With KD Podcast. Kirkpatrick is by most accounts one of the two sure-thing cornerback prospects in this coming April's draft. Does his arrest preclude him from becoming a member of the Dallas Cowboys? Two days ago, the consensus opinion was that there was no way Kirkpatrick would make it to the #14 pick? Now the question is, would Jason Garrett want him? What's more the concern, that a 20-year-old smokes the ganja, or that he couldn't even stay away from it facing the biggest opportunity he'll ever get?
Roger Staubach: Tony Romo is a solution: ESPN Dallas | Captain Comeback is the latest former signal caller to support our Tony Romo; on the heels of Danny White's vote of confidence last week.
"We have enough talent we can get it turned around," Staubach said Monday night at an event honoring the first Cowboys Super Bowl title team. "We have a quarterback that can do it. I think our defense kind of let us down in the secondary, especially at times during the year when we were coming back. That should get improved next year."
SB Nation Officially Opposes SOPA: SB Nation | I don't want to lessen the impact of this by quipping, and we normally stay away from political discussions. However, this legislation threatens the way that BTB and other SB Nation sites interact and provide coverage to the masses. Chris Mottram laid out SBN's stance.
Vox Media -- the parent company of SB Nation -- is officially opposed to SOPA. The bill as drafted is overly broad, vaguely worded, and gives rise to a number of significant concerns:
-- Serious constitutional issues in regards to due process and seizure of property.
-- Decreased effectiveness and questionable availability of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) safe harbor for sites that host user-contributed content;
-- Higher compliance costs for all sites that host user-contributed content;
-- Potentially overzealous compliance efforts by search engines and payment providers in their attempts to maintain the immunity offered by SOPA section 104;

Oh my God! A 20-year old smoking weed?!?!
Yes it was VERY stupid to at least put himself in the position to get caught just months before cashing in, but if he falls to 14 you take that weed smoking bad@ss without thinking twice. I’m all aboard for David DeCastro given the early rankings, but Kilpatrick falling to 14 would be a no-brainer.
Lord Humungus - January 18, 2012
No question
Too much talent exactly where we need it to pass up due to outdated societal misconceptions.
i dont rent Im a romowner - January 18, 2012 via mobile
but until the NFL changes it's policy on testing for weed........
just4fun - January 18, 2012
I would bet
that you couldnt pull 11 guys off of any teams roster to even take the field if one of the requirements was that they had never smoked weed. If that was the case Tebow may be the only guy in the NFL
sexililkitti - January 19, 2012
It's all about timing and judgement. It's not about him having ever smoked weed
It’s about choosing to smoke weed and be out at 1am when all of the NFL scouts are looking you over with a magnifying glass.
just4fun - January 19, 2012
+1
What exactly do you think his committment level to the team would be if he cant stay away from the stuff long enough to cash in at draft time…..to me that is a much bigger concern
BigBad Joe - January 19, 2012
exactly, we already drafted one knucklehead in Dez
We don’t need to draft anymore like him no matter how talented they are.
Terry - January 19, 2012
Exactly,
can any one of you walk into your workplace and blaze up? No, you can’t because it is illegal. Every time you buy a bag of pot, you are putting bullets into a Columbian drug czars gun. Not only should he not be drafted by the Cowboys, he should be removed from the draft all together. Until these boys get it through their head that they are responsible for their own actions they will continue to be the drunken thugs that the average person thinks they are.
GunsUp - January 19, 2012
Let's not get crazy...
and at least be accurate. He was not at work, and not even on his way to work, when he was arrested. Not sure why you chose to take that route. I would venture to guess that he is not even employed at this time. You must have never been young and done anything wrong in your life. Must be tough being perfect all the time.
cowdog - January 19, 2012
You win!
I nominate this post for “Best unintentional hilarity of the day”! Don’t let it go to your head though.
Most weed smoked in this country is grown in this country. Hell, Kentucky’s biggest crop, period, is marijuana.
Maybe you should rephrase your statement to “Every time you buy a bag of cheap, crappy Mexican pot, you are putting bullets into a Mexican dirt farmer’s gun.”
Buy American!
danielt - January 19, 2012
Wow you have issues gunsup
Since 2006 the majority of pot sold in America is American home grown and since the 14 states have legalized for medical use in 2010 over 80 % of pot is medically grown in America. Seriously some people are retarded when it comes to weed. I’d much rather a guy smoke a joint and hang out the get drunk and try to drive himself home and that’s just a 1 game suspension.
Sado44 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Atleast the War On Drugs propaganda worked on someone....
UnitedStateOfTX - January 19, 2012
Every time you buy a bag of pot, you are putting bullets into a Columbian drug czars gun.
Yeah, this is totally correct. Everyone knows that Beardo the Weirdo who grows a couple of plants and sells the excess to his neighbors tithes to Columbian Drug Czars AND Al Quaeda.
It was the guy selling loose joints at Phish shows in the Ninteties that brought down the Twin Towers.
Everytime someone takes a bong hit, the Presidents on Mount Rushmore shed tears of stones.
Why do the rest of you guys hate America?
Seanrude - January 19, 2012
under 20 grams
that’s < 1 oz. — def personal use quantities.
I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again, without getting too political, the stuff shouldn’t even be illegal and should carry no more consequence than drinking a beer.
But to know what the consequences are and not be able to avoid the trouble speaks more to judgment than anything.
Would love it if this dropped him to 14 and wasn’t a deal breaker of being non-RKG for JG and we could get great value on him because of this.
scottmaui - January 18, 2012
pot would not be illegal if .....
the US gov could tax regulate it, but they cant cause any1 can grow it, see what they did to all the moon shiners, they stopped them from making it , and made it where you had to have a license to sell and pay tax on it lol .
IRONRAVEN - January 19, 2012
Zone cover guy.....
is the other rap I’ve heard. He seems very physical but the Cowboys need the coverage man-to-man as well.
Seems the 7 of the first 14 teams in line need a CB as well. Cowboys need so many things maybe they should trade down for numbers. Pick up Cordy Glenn in the process. Oline nowhere near complete either. I can think of another CB with a record that might come in such a deal; Janoris Jenkins if you need the arrest record to make you happy.
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
The Boys have been burned before by drafting high players that had drug history.
As a result they tend to stay away from them.
Rena - January 18, 2012
and by passing on them, uhhh Randy -Cowboy Burner- Moss
and we would all be surprised how much drugs are a part of athletics …right Sam Hurd
LiveNDieBlue - January 18, 2012
they tend to, I agree
but how often have they been offered an elite college player who has just dropped to due being caught with a very minor about of weed? This isn’t exactly Pacman or Tank Johnson we’re talking about here.
foyesboys - January 18, 2012
Hakeem Nicks
Didn’t he also get busted for smoking before the combine. Look at how that worked out….
dallas_assasin - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Shouldn't be a problem
given the set of circumstances, he likely still won’t make it to us at 14.
Cowtoys - January 18, 2012
Not gonna happen unless something else comes up...
BlueNSilverBlood - January 18, 2012
This is not the first incident with Dre
There had been rumors about his use of pot for a couple of years now and it is well known with scouts and NFL teams. It was just this year that there was specultion in the media that he was on the verge of being suspended from the team permantly after sources confirmed multiple failed drug tests atAlabame and run ins with campus police involving drugs.
Birddog26 - January 19, 2012
Again, thank you for the info, Birddog.
Just my opinion:
I do think marijuana could be legalized as a controlled substance. However, even if it is relatively harmless, current laws would greatly impede DK’s career with us if he gets caught. I would not chance the first rounder on him if he is a smoker. I’d much rather see us take chances on players like Lee or Carter, who’s stock dropped due to injury.
BlueNSilverBlood - January 24, 2012
Oh I'd have to disagree. He knew he was a top ten pick, he's in FL preparing for the draft
and gets busted for weed at 1am? That very very questionable judgement. What’s to stop him from getting busted again, then it’s suspension time. That’s way too much of a risk that high in the draft. Dez dropped to the 20s and he didn’t even have a drug problem.
just4fun - January 18, 2012
I don't know what to think
It seems to me like everyone’s position in this debate depends on their opinion of the moral implications connected to smoking marijuana.
foyesboys - January 18, 2012
I don't have a problem at all with people who smoke weed. Got plenty of friends who do.
But the NFL tests and suspends players for it. So my moral stance on MJ is irrelevant. The question is how likely is the player to get suspended for using a banned substance. If the NFL tested for using mayonaise and he got busted for eating a tomato sandwich with mayo, I’m not taking him early in the first round.
just4fun - January 18, 2012
NMNA
No Morons Need Apply
No on anyone DUMB enough to get caught just a few months before their biggest payday. Before determining where and for how much they play for.
That is the kind of STUPID this team does not need. Not like we have that many smart ones anyway.
burmafrd1944 - January 19, 2012
I wish that statement was pure b.s but sadly i agree with it, wouldn’t it be great if the team could clone lee & ware say i don’t know about 9 more times.
DarkKnight88 - January 19, 2012
Actually, in my case it does not depend on my moral opinion of pot.
I have no moral problem with pot and think it should be legalized. But I don’t want to draft Dre Knucklehead.
Why? Because the NFL and Goodell have rules against smoking pot and I don’t want one of the Cowboys getting suspended and hurting the team’s chances. Sure, a lot of the current Cowboys probably smoke pot but they are proving that they aren’t stupid enough to get caught. Dre has proved that he is stupid enough to get caught.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
I think the point is
If he would do this before he gets a chance to actually see all his hard work his life long dream come true and ruin everything what would he do before the playoffs god forbid he get the bye week and he gets popped smoking pot. I’m not against it at all but in the situation our players in the NFL are in this isn’t an option and if the influences around you are to much to bear than you have a long road ahead of you. Might have just ruined his chances to be a cowboys or even a millionaire this year.

SOPA is a bad law and I support SBNation
The idiocracy blows my mind. From what I’ve read on the one hand you have Google, Wikipedia, and the scientists that founded the damn internet explaining why this law will fundamentally damage how the internet behaves, how the social web is founded on freedom of speech and its innovations are rapidly propelling forward humankind’s collective knowledge with tools such as wikipedia. And on the other side you have 60+ year olds saying “I don’t understand why you want to defend foreigners stealing form hard working Americans.”
It’s such a reduction, such idiocracy. It’s like a toddler playing with a gun, these SOPA politicians have no clue what they are doing and the consequences of their actions.
If this law passes things like comments and fanposts on SbNation could very well be a thing of the past. How could a site like SBNation risk getting taken off the internet by SOPA if some bad person posted links to torrents as a fanshot before the moderators noticed it?
Blue Eyed Devil - January 18, 2012
Government running out of businesses to ruin......
think of the fine job they did with housing and Fannie Mae. Why worry?
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
and plenty of private banks also screwed up.
There was a lack of govt regulation on the govt’s own assets and the private market. Having said that, SOPA goes WAY too far in dealing with a medium-level problem (theft of intellectual party). It’s like if we passed legislation vaguely giving the govt the power to lock up everyone suspected of being a terrorist indefinitely…….oh wait?
As a historian, I can say that democracy and basic rights (not being locked up at the arbitrary will of the govt) are precious and few. This may sound cliche but we need to balance using govt to solve real problems without signing away our rights we take for granted.
ScottB1985 - January 18, 2012
Sigh.....
exactly the sort of sort of Wikimindset response to be expected. “As a historian”….please spare me!
I’m against SOPA but I want to puke knowing the sort of baffoons who wrap their arms around “free speech” when all they want is to AVOID what they want to impose on others every minute of every day; government oversite and control. Hypocrisy #101. As for SBN they deleted my first observation in less that a few minutes.
Heaven forbid Wikipedia, who have lowered our culture especially for those under 30 since inception was forced to live by the very culture they advocate to all others. You and I are really living in a Orwell world at this point. So spare the false cliches about democracy while Wikipedia and the rest of statist advocate tribes make fools out of themselves. the last people on earth who should cite “free speech” as the driver of their policy and advocacy.
If you were a “historian” you would be condemning this huge hypocrisy and what the internet largely is in the hands of the cartel leaders whining about SOPA. Talk about gonads the size of grapefruit. As for Chris (mortgage point shaver extrodinaire) Dodd who should be in jail but is now on the Hollywood payroll supporting SOPA, let’s just ship it.
It’s seem you haven’t figured out the key lesson, government is the root of failure. So you’re against SOPA but have a kind word for Fannie Mae. You should explore this contradiction because you and many people like you clearly don’t get it at all. Most of my venom has been targeting the phony and corrupt private industry leaders who have the gall to feed “free speech” twaddle on their platforms while they violate those principles every minute of everyday. As I said on another thread imagine EXXON handing out leaflets and lobby efforts at gas stations? You would be having a COW! More irony for you to consider. I’m not looking for the government to do a darn thing to Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia or SBN. The market will eventually correct these excesses but it can be a long wait.
Cwon1 - January 19, 2012
sigh, I won't even get started on SOPA and PIPA
If it gets passed itll be one of the final nails in the camels back for this country. We are run by paranoid, corrupted senior citizens that are afraid of change and only care about making money for themselves. The rich stay rich and everyone else gets robbed. Instead of progressing forward they are busy forcing over sized steel pieces of junk that run on black gold instead of developing a more efficient engine and body. Instead of finding a more efficient design, materials, and strategies we are still living in homes designed from the 1600s. Instead of working towards renewable energy (like Germany just declared to do) we are still fighting CFL vs incandescent. And most of all instead of encouraging and nurturing critical thinking, the arts, creativity, world life problems and economic fundamentals we have a school system that "prepares you for standardized test that prepare for you for more standardized test that prepare you for the next level of “higher” education that leave you in tens of thousands of dollars in debt only to realize you need a “higher” education now and have nothing to gain but a “well rounded” “no student left behind” “senior projects” mush.
Scary world.. sorry I just watched “contagion” and my mind was flowing.

King Man - January 18, 2012 via mobile
MPAA gave their favorite Senators almost $100MM
to draft this legislation for ‘protection’ from a minor threat, and oh by the way, stifle competition. Never in the history of the country has innovation become so repressed by interests trying to protect the status quo(see BH comment above). And now with virtually unregulated contributions from corporate interests they will get the best government money can by.
As with Dallas Cowboy SB titles, a true free market economy is but a fading memory.
tdships - January 18, 2012
Not gonna touch that last piece with a thousand foot stick, but...
Don’t the “capitalists” like this bill? It makes it easier to prevent people from stealing your intellectual property, isn’t that a tenant of capitalism? Work hard make something good people will buy it?
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
capitalism is blind on the issue
One capitalist would say piracy is the free market expressing the value of the medium. Digital distrubution is a disruptive innovation and it’s the companies that should adopt to the masses rather than the masses adopting to the companies. That the companies should find ways to create movies and music and distribute them online for free.
Another capitalist would say it’s the duty of the company to capture the value they are creating in terms of revenue.
Capitalism is blind on such matters.
Blue Eyed Devil - January 18, 2012
I mean I'll take your word for it...
I agree even if you say that this piracy is the worst thing ever, SOPA still goes too far. I agree with that other capitalist. There’s plenty of avenues to make money off the internet, and some business models that worked in the simply aren’t viable anymore. The record industry for one, which I am intimately familiar with, is still wanting record sales back at 90s numbers. Ain’t happening, the current economy won’t support it and piracy is too easy. They have to change the model of how records are sold. I had some more stuff in Ironman’s fanshot. I completely agree with that other capitalist you mentioned. Sounds like a bright dude.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
That capitalist might point out
That this shift in business model is well under way. The consumer doesn’t want to spend $12 to sit in a room and watch an Adam Sandler comedy. It doesn’t need a team of writers, an actor paid $20 million, and a team of directors, producers, and editors.
Instead, the consumer wants to sit through a mere 15-second commercial and watch funny videos on Youtube, CollegeHumor, the Onion, etc.
A capitalist might call that the car overtaking the horse-drawn-carriage. That the entertainment industry should spend less time and money trying to impose increasingly draconian laws to fight back the tide in vain from their eroding sand castle of “Zoo Keeper” and “Jack and Jill” movies. That instead they should focus on making places like Hulu the destination of choice for comedy the way the consumer wants to consume it.
Blue Eyed Devil - January 18, 2012
Still...
There’s way too much of the old business model on the way. Plenty of shows aren’t available for streaming that SHOULD be available for streaming. CDs are still way too expensive and the industry still insists on trying to stimulate the movie theater industry.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
Not to start a political fight but I can't stop myself from commenting.
There is also too much old business model in the way of health insurance companies, drug companies and even school book publishers. I’m not even talking about universal health care. But just those 3 examples are pushing against change harder than the music and movie industries.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
Well two of those industries are more connected than a computer lab.
The book industry…sigh. I know authors that write text books, the horror stories they tell me, you’d want to cry. Society changes, but it seems like these huge industries are almost “too big to change.” Sucks, but that’s the way it is.
Omar Little - January 20, 2012
Read Scott Adam's Blog post on the subject
While I don’t agree with all of it, he makes some illuminating points. But the overall issue remains innovation being stifled by vested interests protecting the status quo. And getting Congress to do it for them. The notion that a ‘democracy shouldn’t pick winners’ is laughable in this country. That’s precisely what this government does – on behalf of business, at the expense of its citizens.
http://www.dilbert.com/blog/
Digital distribution is about disintermediation, which is more about efficiency than any kind of ‘freedom’ someone wants to ascribe to it. Of course, the vested interest want to limit it, because they don’t want the sheeple to understand their value-add is nowhere commensurate with the cost they add.
tdships - January 20, 2012
I am pleasantly surprised that the 2 replies to my comment are by people who understand what I meant.
Instead of being flamed by people like Cwon1.
fs65 - January 20, 2012
Chris Dodd's response to the legislation's defeat
is startlingly tone-deaf especially now. Almost as bad as Gingrich/Romney on a daily basis – which is really saying something. Fundamentally, he said, ‘when we pay for legislation, we expect legislation. Don’t come back here asking for more money when you don’t deliver what we pay you to.’
Can’t expect much from a career politician, and not a very good one at that, who’s pledge not to become a lobbyist lasted all of 60 days. At least he has a good mortgage.

My reply to your neophyte comment here was censored, how's that for irony??......
or that three evil organizations; MiniTrue (Wikipedia), Thought police (Google) and the dull wits at Yahoo all are publically whining about SOPA when they support censorship in China and the total corruption of facts and history in their own ways.
That they are liberal organizations and I pointed it out is why I was censored.
Again, irony or more correctly hypocrisy at many levels. Here you are whining about “corrupt senior citizens” when you don’t have a clue.
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
Darrell Issa and Ron Paul (not exactly George Soros) also hate SOPA
Realistically I don’t see why you like the bill. The China thing’s MILES different, comparing the two situations and acting like they’re the same demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the internet and politics in general.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
Did I say I support SOPA???
I’m only commenting on the stoooopiddd, hypocrisy of many participants who clearly look the other way when it suits them.

Dead Money Stats
I’ve argued on the recent FA review thread the Cowboys have a bad history with dead money of past dated signings of veterans. If there is a site tracking dead money over the years that would, I believe, confirm my claim. Any such site?
Lee, Carter, Ware, Ratliff, Jenkins are the only sure things on my defense card and if the price was right I would trade some of these (Ratliff being a focus). Sensabaugh and Scandrick should be moved if possible, more poor extensions. Likely these are more in a line of White Elephants that can’t be traded now or for much later on. Every draft pick on defense and the Cowboys will still be short players. The need some oline picks as well.
The team is top heavy and short players. They need to downsize the expensive players and add numbers from drafts and lesser knowns. This bad pattern has gone on for years.
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
Everson Walls
was not the best player and was I believe a Free Agent or undrafted player. Scandrick and some of the others that you name can be better at the game, bt that is where coaching comes in. Walls I believe lead the league in interceptions his rookie year, so can Scandrick. Campo was acancer in my mind and complacency does become a factor. I loved Tom Landry, but at some point in time we had to move on. That kills me to say that and it has taken me almost 22 years to admit it. It is about the coaching make no mistake about that.
damnarab2 - January 18, 2012
Rotten management ideas....top heavy player culture for example
has something to do with the Cowboys problems, it’s beyond coaching. To many empty big names, soft contracts and extensions that sell tickets but fail to advance the team.
Plenty of enablers and apologists on this blog,
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
Tyron Smith?
JG’s philosophy is to build the line, yet there is an obvious need at CB.
ScottB1985 - January 19, 2012
scandrick can't lead the league in INT's his rookie year just because well he ain't a rookie anymore
ratware - January 18, 2012
Now Carter is on the "sure thing" list. I love it. He played what, 30 snaps this year?
fivetwos - January 18, 2012
About Carter
If he’s recovered, picked in the second round why wouldn’t he be? Should he join the many hyped bench rot players Dallas is also famous for? We should have him play special teams until his contract expires and becomes All-Pro for another team in our division?
Dallas is short 7-8 starters/players on defense alone. Scandrick got smoked when it counted, Sensabaugh is a no impact invisable player at best. Newman is gone for sure. Jenkins is made of glass. In short very little to build off the roster in the secondary. Two LBs short and an average aging DLine that needs players.
What do you have in mind fivetwos, another five year plan?

Just like Martellous Bennett after his rookie year, right?
No reason a physical gifted athlete drafted in the 2nd round making touchdown passes from Romo wouldn’t be playing at a Rob Gronkowski level for the rest of his career.
Blue Eyed Devil - January 18, 2012
Maybe they should have taken the Cincinatti offer??
What always gets me about this board is how people complain but always support the status quo culture that created the situation.

Sure thing list? Or "were confident that this guy's going to be good, and we need him to be good" list?
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
Going by what Brian Broadus has said (we don't have much else to go on) Carter has looked good so far
and had started to pick up the defense/reading and reacting better towards the end of the year. We have no reason to think Carter can’t start next year.
just4fun - January 18, 2012
Fail or succeed....
What alot of old wash woman fans there are? They want the team run like a motor vehicles department.
Soft top heavy contracts, bench rot. They cry for more and still can’t figure out why the team is 8+ starters short come training camp..
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
This direction, I personally believe this team needs to go in is young and talented
not old and talented.
Support of the 2nd round pick carter is support of a young and talented player. The alternative, is to either sign a FA ILB (which I’m not opposed to as long as they are young an relatively cheap) or to draft one (I’m also infavor as long as it’s not in the first three rounds).
The question about carter came up due to the draft mock claiming we would take Luke Kuechly ILB. Many of us question this move, not because we wouldn’t like competition at ILB, but because if we have a much greater need in the secondary, interior offensive line and DE. If Carter is a complete bust,, Kuechly becomes a viable option, thus the question: Is Carter a bust……. Many of us say no….. based primarly on reports. And since he didn’t play much, it’s all we have to go on.
just4fun - January 18, 2012
So, let me get this straight.
You have spent the last couple days telling all of us how stupid we are, dumb, idiots, sheep, etc. Vs how intelligent you are, you insult everyone, show your “superiority” and talk down to us.
Exactly why are you “wasting” your time on us here again?
And how do we intro you to Mensa?

Draft
1st round- Upshaw or barron
2nd round-janoris Jenkins
3rd round- Brandon Boykin
The rest of the draft… Defense
Now let’s go win the NFC east
drobe86 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
If we honk janoris Jenkins will be available in the second I say get him in the second.
That would be a steal. I personally think Ingram is a better prospect than upshaw.
So I say Ingram or decastro in first. I’ll be shocked if Jenkins even makes it to the second let alone all the way to where we pick. If he makes it to the second I wouldn’t mind trying to move up and get him. But that’s a long shot

Ingram
Is really overrated. You realize he only has 1 full year as starter at south carolina? He’s a 4-3 de… I watched alot of their games and he rarely stood up and rushed. He has no moves except a bull rush. This guy has bust written all over him. Remember vernon gholston? Smh
drobe86 - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Are u serious??? Why do people talk without doing their homework.
“he only has a bull rush” are you kidding me? Have you seen his spin move? Its Dwight freeney like. Ingram will be a beast in the nfl.

I’ve seen him play several times this year and he’s good.

Copy and paste the whole link including the black letters on the right.
Sometimes SBN cuts off the end of links like that. I don’t know why.

Never mind. The links are broke.
I should have tried my own advice first, but I have seen that work before.

The bowl game vs neb… Ingram sucked it up big time…
drobe86 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
no Janoris Jenkins any time at any point
He got kicked off of his college team. Anytime that happens a player has serious judgement issues. He was most likely given 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances, and probably more that was swept under the rug. He’s a low character guy. Not what you want on your team
just4fun - January 18, 2012
Sometimes young people make HUGE mistakes. Doesnt mean they are horrible people.
StrosSouth - January 18, 2012
True, but at the same time, I would take the chance if I'm giving him millions of dollars
just4fun - January 18, 2012
Im still for taking him myself. Every pick no matter what round is risk of failing so why
not take the roll of the dice with him?
StrosSouth - January 18, 2012
But some are more risky than others, and you have to ask what kind of personality
are you bringing into the locker room. This team isn’t strong enough mentally to handle a rouge personality that is selfish. Furthermore, Garrett has stated he wants the RKG. Getting busted for weed twice (meaning he’s used it a lot more than twice) I’d imagine doesn’t consistute the RKG
just4fun - January 18, 2012
This kid, and thats exactly what he is, needs guidance and structure and with
this current coaching staff and the guys around him could do that i believe. Id be willing to take gamble unless he just shows no remorse or doesnt show any kind of maturity in his interviews at the combine.
StrosSouth - January 18, 2012
He had the chance to change his behavior at florida, a Division 1 SEC school
Yet, he chose to defy his coaches and continue his behavior anyway. He transfers to North Alabama where he is waaaayy more talented and famous than anyone the school has had play for them ever and big surprise doesn’t get busted again for weed. He may interview well but so did Jamarcus Russell. This isn’t about rumor or immaturity. It’s a confirmed drug problem. He couldn’t put the weed down to save his college career. What makes you think he can put it down to save his pro-career.
just4fun - January 18, 2012
Also, Jerry Jones has stated previously that he would take chances
on players with off-the-field problems as long as they weren’t drug related. This is drug related. It would seem to cross him off Jerrys list as well as Garretts
just4fun - January 18, 2012
Well that pretty much garauntees we won't be drafting a cb in the first round unless it's Dennard which I think would be a stretch at 14th
Dynamicduo - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Yep, that's the way it's shaking out. I'd bet on us signing one or two in FA
Luckily there are plenty out there this year.
just4fun - January 19, 2012
Ohhhh here you go. I nearly forgot!!!!!!
Michael Irvan was arrested for cocaine!!!!!
Yeah our hall of fame superman receiver was arrested for drugs. Yep I guess all those superbowls he won us should be thrown away because we should have NEVER drafted that drug head. In sarcastic text
Cocaine is a little worse than weed don’t you think?
Dynamicduo - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Long after Irvin, in the mid 2000's, Jerry himself said he will not draft drug related problems.
So you can drop the snarky remarks towards a BtB’er.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
AND IM TELLING YOU WE WOULDN'T HAVE ALL OUR SUPER BOWL WINS IF WE HAD THIS RULL A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!
All of you people dogging someone for getting busted for drugs are the same guys that loved Michael Irvin in the 90’s. I think they have a word for people like that? Oh that’s right they do, they’re called hypocrites.
Dynamicduo - January 19, 2012 via mobile
First, I'm not such a blind homer that I can't recognise that Irvin did bad stuff while helping win SBs.
But also, I spent the 90’s stationed overseas so other than knowing that the Cowboys won SBs, I had no idea about any of the players actions until the 2000’s.
And the fact still is that Jerry decided on his rule in the late 2000’s AFTER Irvin and guys like Quincy, Pacman, Tank etc.
Nothing you can do about it and yelling won’t help. It’s Jerry’s rule.
fs65 - January 20, 2012
He got busted for weed twice.
Yeah that’s pretty freakin stupid but he cleaned up and hasn’t gotten into any trouble over the past year. I agree it’s a chance, so is Kirkpatrick now. Thats what player interviews r for. Talk to him question him and if he seems clean, I say draft this top 10 talent IN THE SECOND. He could easily be the best cb in the draft. But if his interviews don’t go well and there’s still questions your right it’s not worth it.
Dynamicduo - January 18, 2012 via mobile
It's a lot easier to get by with weed at north alabama school for the blind than it is at florida

Your telling me that if he’s available in the second we shouldn’t take a chance on him? That would be 3 straight yrs we’ve got a 1st round talent in the second. You do realize that probably half the nfl does drugs they just don’t get caught? Yeah he’s a moron for getting busted, but it’s weed. Heck it’s legal in some states.
Of course we shouldn’t even be having this conversation b/c he won’t make it all the way to where we draft in the 2nd. He may get picked ahead of Kirkpatrick now

Look at his tape as a junior at Florida
He plays Julio jones very well. If that doesn’t work just type in his highlights and it’s the first one. Shows his positives and negatives. The kid can come up and make the tackle, play zone, press, blitz. He’s the whole package. I would love to get him if his interviews go well. We took a chance on Dez, I’m telling you this kid has that type talent. He would come in and start at a very high level right off the bat.

SOPA/PIPA are bad laws and threaten pretty much any site that depends on user generated content
It’s really scary to read that legislation and think it might actually pass. I encourage everyone to contact their elected representatives about it. The mind boggling thing is it isn’t even a partisan issue; too many republicans and democrats that have been bought by Hollywood. :\
Spaceball - January 18, 2012
Obama already put the legislation on ice.
The bill’s writer basically said that he needs to research it more, SOPA’s dead. If it comes back again the web’s most popular websites will see to it that the bill dies. It’s election season, very few House members have safe seats, support for SOPA will just about assure that you get the boot.

Wikipedia the “good guys”??? That’s especially clueless.
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
thats why i was suprised the moderator brought it up.
You’re not in the wrong for discussing it considering they brought it up.
TARHEEL PAUL - January 19, 2012
Notice how I brought it up without bringing any of my personal liberal/conservative viewpoints into the discussion
It deals with the sustained viability of this blog, to which we call our home on the internet.
It SHOULD be possible to discuss the merits of the legislation, which to my knowledge is supported and opposed by both sides of the fences, without a conversation deteriorating into mudslinging and agenda advancement.
But I guess some aren’t able to do that, so in that, I guess I gave folks too much credit and I shouldn’t have.
KD Drummond - January 19, 2012
Yeah I never got that as someone in school and still get it.
Does it matter what “side” you are on, both parties fail their most important goal, taking care of the American people. They are careerpoliticians.

need some short term limits, but it will never happen, and the career politicians are the root of all evil
BigBad Joe - January 19, 2012
Ever wonder why someone would spend millions to get elected to a job that pays

Term limits will not eliminate the lobbyists, but it will allow congressmen to vote rationally without fear of losing their next campaign contribution or fundraiser.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
I get why you did it.
But i also knew where it would go.Your post was fine KD. Just from reading it I have no idea what your political views are which is exactly how a good writer should do it.
But yes, you gave people too much credit if you thought it could be discussed with civility. Thats why i just steer clear of it all together.
TARHEEL PAUL - January 19, 2012
That's pretty condescending.......
and inaccurate. It’s a joke if you want to lobby against a bill misusing the narrative it’s about “free speech” and align yourself with some clearly evil organizations like Wikipedia which is right out of Geroge Orwell’s “1984” in design and politically correct purpose. Google, Yahoo and Wikipedia all surpress free speech and are tools already against “freedom”.
This doesn’t mean I’m lining up with Chris Dodd who is now whoring for Hollywood instead of the banking industry (which he should be serving time in jail for the results but isn’t).
Can you imagine if Exxon, who has far more legitimate social complaints for being scapegoated ochestrated such a stunt as Wikipedia did the other day? The episode confirms how clueless large sections of the population really are and how phony the talking points can be on any side.
So you presented a simple minded narrative about “free speech” and SOPA and I rejected it because it is BOGUS. Now you will be a bigger hypocrite and likely censor my comment while leaving your gruel on the blog.
Cwon1 - January 19, 2012
If you really can't see the difference between discussing the merits of the legislation and what you posted
you deserve to be talked to in a condescending manner.
KD Drummond - January 19, 2012
and furthermore, since you want to act like a clueless victim
notice how many of your pro-SOPA comments I’ve allowed to stand. Yet, you still can’t grasp the concept that your comments which I did hide were far and beyond discussing the merits of the legislation.
Notice how only one of us has felt the need to spiral into personal attacks.
Walk away.
KD Drummond - January 19, 2012
The ultimate irony of course.....
is that I’m against SOPA as it is written now also. I just can’t stand the dolt talking points and attitude you and thought police organizations you are shilling for (Wikipedia and Google) for example.
There is also the host of usual blather about “bad Government” “free speech” when a good part of the internet base supports more government in housing, banking, energy, financial services, wealth redistribution, Orwell education systems but somehow thinks their pet rights should be exempt. More hypocrisy then you can shake a stick at.
Think of this as a “teaching moment”.
Cwon1 - January 19, 2012

don’t worry, I’ll wait.
KD Drummond - January 19, 2012

It pains me to voting on the same side as pinheads and thugs.

Actually more Republican politicians oppose SOPA than Democrats
Lissyyyyy - January 18, 2012
There's more Republican house members...
The President opposes SOPA, so does Pelosi they’re the de facto leaders of the Democratic party and are the faces of the party. The author of the bill is a Republican, from Texas too…you guys should give Lamarr Smith the boot…primary him if you have too, just hold that jackass accountable. There’s prominent Republicans that DO NOT like the bill, like Ron Paul (not really a traditional Republican, but still), Darrell Issa, and others.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
Lived in Texas
Was actually in Lamar Smith’s district, he won’t be going anywhere. As long as he keeps running, he’ll get the seat. I don’t think most people realize he was one of the brainchilds for the bill.
Final Frame - January 19, 2012
Yeah...
I mean, full disclosure I’m about as big of a lefty as they get…but that’s just inexcusable. Replace him with a Republican for all I care. Let Sean Hannity take the district for all I care, just get him out of there. How many guys lost their seats over healthcare? This guy writes the most unpopular bill in the past twenty years and he gets to keep his? Please.
Omar Little - January 20, 2012
The irony is that SOPA is fighting the very thing that makes the interwebby stuff so successful.
It is trying to regulate and control a thing that thrives because it is too far ahead of government for government to effectively regulate and control. If the idiots pass SOPA, then someone will find a way around it, and the worldwide online community will move on, leaving the governments wondering what happened.
Only totalitarian governments have any real chance at “controlling” the internet and social media, and that battle is far from over.
I can understand content creators wanting to protect their rights to what they produce, but you have to careful about how much you restrict the free flow of information and accept that nothing is going to be 100% successful. Some piracy will happen.
Tom Ryle - January 18, 2012
SOPA is reactionary and a nonsense
so the big companies “spokepersons of free market, of laissez faire, laissez passer” are opposing to free exchange. Interesting. For the ones thinking about illegal implications and piracy i told you the way neo-liberalism approachs “laissez faire, laissez passer” nowadays is just as ilegal or more.

If we cut TNew after June 1st we only save 4 mil? When do we have to cut him to save the 6 mill?

The end of his contract.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
Omar, did you read the linked article?
It states that we could save 4 or 6 million dollars depending on if Dallas chooses to make him a post June-1 cut. So when do they save the 6 million? Post or pre June first?
mho - January 18, 2012 via iPhone app
would be post june first
Cutting him would accelerate the remaining portion of his signing bonus to the 2012 cap (8million if I am not mistaken…if Dallas were to cut him after June 1st then we can move up to 80% of the cap hit(6million) to the 2013 cap….as I understand it
I am Ironman!!! - January 18, 2012
Confirming my point you ignore......
the Cowboys are systematically top heavy. It isn’t the failure of any single higher end signing it’s a pattern.
Cowboys will remain dead money leaders and the fan base eats it up. you were wrong about the oline years ago and you’re wrong today. The Cowboys should trade what they can (Ratliff might be possible right now) and fix the management problem of top heavy payrolls. That’s why they are short 8 starters.
Cwon1 - January 19, 2012
I would say the boys are short 8 starters
cause this team didn’t draft quality depth to eventually replace the starters that were given a ridiculous contract but that’s just 1 man’s opinion.
DarkKnight88 - January 19, 2012
It was a joke...
Definitely don’t want Newman until the end of that contract. Wherever the cut has to take place I’m sure they’ll do it to save the cash.
Omar Little - January 18, 2012
I am wrong in that the Cowboys have only 33 players under contract right now?
and are only 12.5 million under the cap. I do not see how they can afford to bring in much of the way of an impact player(s) via free agency
082288 - January 18, 2012
They are in good shape under the new CBA rules and by cutting certain players and restructuring
a couple of contracts
StrosSouth - January 18, 2012
Actually, it's a good thing
I’d still like them to dump 5 or more contracts and if they could get 4+ more draft picks in the process that would be the right thing to do.
Do we have a projection on this years dead money so far?
Think hungry cast-offs ready to kill to get a chance to play. Like Robinson. 40+ rookies should be processed through camp this year as well.
Cwon1 - January 18, 2012
I thought it was around 23 million in dead cap money
but I read somewhere that it might actually be closer to 28
082288 - January 19, 2012
I'd like detailed league stats but......
I think the teams obfuscate the reporting. They can also carry the losses forward.
Still, I’m surprised there isn’t detailed site or list compiled. My gut feeling is the Cowboys would be high in dead money.

that so many people are acting like Kirkpatrick and Jenkins were members of the Manson family. Jenkins has paid his debt to society and Dre will soon. How many of us has smoked a little weed in our day? Our generation did it our parents generation did too. The kid was enjoying his last few days of his youth cut him some slack but make sure he understands its time to grow up.
sexililkitti - January 18, 2012
I couldn't care less about how weed would/wouldn't affect his personal life.
The NFL tests for weed. He couldn’t put it down when he knows he stands to make millions of dollars as a top ten pick, it’s stands to reason that there is a good chance he won’t put it down when he starts playing in the NFL. Then you start talking about suspensions and missing games. It’s not about the harmful affects of smoking a joint or even if it affects his play. It’s about him getting suspended and being unavaible for critical games

being dependable is a big part of being responsible....
he made the choice to procure a controlled substance even tho he knew how it would affect public perception of him. That’s not making a mistake, thats making a decision that what he wanted was more important than anything else. Saying he was young and stupid won’t solve the inherent problem of why he made that choice…
TruBluToTheCore - January 19, 2012
Forrest Gump Kilpatrick and Jenkins
and not in a good way
we don’t need more stinking dumb players
burmafrd1944 - January 19, 2012
I'm hoping we consider Russell Wilson in the late rounds, the dude is lights out at qb
…….but he’s only 5’11". He’s a boom or bust type. If he can overcome his height disadvantage he’s a first round talent. Smart, hardworking, good at reading defenses and has a natural feel for the rush. Just that height thing.
just4fun - January 19, 2012
just4fun if Russell
is “smart” & good at reading defenses then i would be more than happy to have him on board, i could care less about height cause this dallas defense needs more guys with those qualities.
DarkKnight88 - January 19, 2012
Brees is 5-11
Terry - January 19, 2012
His qb rating is 22 points higher than Luck and he's done it in two different major conferences
He transfered from NC state to Wisconsin with out having to sit out by some weird NCAA rule that they have sence gotten rid of. Most 5’11’ qbs can’t make it. But if he can then we have a replacement for Romo (let him sit like A.Rodgers did).
just4fun - January 19, 2012
I think he didn't have to sit out because he had already graduated and his football coach released him from his scholarship.

I dont care if Kirkpatrick smokes weed...
as long as he loves playing football much more then ganja
but what is worrying me now, is that he dont care for his draft stock as much as he should…
orli - January 19, 2012
rather smoke weed then get paid
ain’t smart
Oh and by the way all this BS about smoking in college; most college kids are SMART enough to quit after leaving school.
So it means nothing
as long as the NFL tests for it and suspends for it we cannot afford the risk of using a first on anyone like that
burmafrd1944 - January 19, 2012
does anyone know if he actually smoked the weed?
From the Fanshot put up by the CowboyWay:
if this is true, and there are ways of proving it, wouldn’t that mean he was just “wrong place, wrong time”?
I am Ironman!!! - January 19, 2012
easy. drug test. marijuana stays in your system for a month
just4fun - January 19, 2012 via Android app
knuckleheads are usually in the wrong place at the wrong time
Terry - January 19, 2012
I really couldn't care less if he smoked it or not.
From everything I have read, this is the second time he has been in the wrong place at the wrong time. This makes me question his judgement and makes me worry is he going to continue to be in the wrong place at the wrong time after being drafted? Because, what Dallas really needs, is another player drawing a lot of negative attention.
Furthermore, will he be charged and convicted of any crimes? If he is convicted, this could lead to a possible suspension. So, now you 1st round draft pick can’t play for his first 3-4 games. Then what if he gets convicted and is given a year probation? That could kill his first season.
To me, these are the real questions that need to be answered before you decide if you draft him.
Grimlock83 - January 19, 2012
Where were ya'll when I was alone over on Rena's Fanshot?
I could’ve used a little back up.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
BD says he failed multi drug tests at Alabama and was close to being suspended this year over it.
Rena - January 19, 2012
Bryant Has A few Civil Law Problems
And some of the Cowboys fans act like he’s the second coming of John Dillinger; this guy gets into CRIMINAL problems and some of you HOPE they draft him? What a deal.
Howleyesque - January 19, 2012
They're both idiots and the Cowboys shouldn't be drafting idiots
Terry - January 19, 2012
Dez isn't an idiot...
He has some problems with money, so would you if you immediately got gobs of money at his age and with his upbringing. Those were fixed, he paid his debts. He got in an scuffle with some losers who were disrespecting him, big deal. I’m sure you’d defend your honor against a couple of degenerate losers. It’s not that big of a deal.
Omar Little - January 19, 2012
Actually, I would walk away. Because I am weak? No.
Because degenerate losers are not worthy enough to put a dent in my honor. And what they say and do is not worth my time.
fs65 - January 19, 2012
Say you're 23...
I mean don’t get me wrong I’m pretty close to you in principle, but as a guy who goes clubbing quite often…I can tell you, some guys deserve it. Badly. You won’t believe how many assholes there are out there. Like imagine your most hated football personality, Joe Buck, Mark Schlereth, etc. and multiply that by about forty and imagine that they’re talking down to you and all their idiot friends agree…it’s awfully hard not to level one of those guys.
Omar Little - January 20, 2012
That's very easy of you to say.
Not everyone is like you. So don’t hold people to whatever standards you have. Somebody was causing Dez problems, he handled it. I know a lot of people who would do the same including myself.
BrickTop - January 20, 2012 via mobile
The timing was perfect!
The kid was just on a team that won the national championship! He deserves some R and R and celebration time before he goes to the combine and has to deal with all the publicity and stress of the draft and such. Finished college, won national title, bout to make millions…. let the man enjoy some of God’s Green Earth!!!
pballinboxer - January 19, 2012
Staubach is a Romo supporter, not sure about Aikman though
and rightly so, it has taken Romo a long time to figure out what Aikman knew out of college. Being the QB of the Dallas Cowboys is not only a great privledge, but also serious job which is not to be taken lightly…
Romo is coming around.
I’m excited to see what happens when you combine Bennett, Fiammetta and Demarco or Felix with Callahan. I get the feeling there could be some room to run this year. We need youth and depth at the guard positions and the future of this team might just be how quickly we can get an Arkin or Decastro at LG. Holland has been great but we need a Nate Newton or Larry Allen. Having a running game can go a long way to wearing down a defense.
scraig - January 19, 2012
You don't remember the huge fuss when Aikman was dating Lori Morgan do you?
We lost a game after he went to Alanta to see her preform live. People were throwing all kinds of fits about it and how he needed to keep his head on football.
