I'm going to try something new this offseason. This is the premiere, and hopefully not the final, edition of Krunchtime with KD; a podcast designed to wrap up the latest in Cowboys conversation. I'll attempt to consolidate the most important news of the present for the franchise, and include my personal take on the comings and goings of the team. They'll probably be of various length, although this one ran a little longer than expected.
In episode 1.1, I'll discuss the Cowboys assistant coaching changes, the units on the team that are a cause for concern as well as a flaw I see in how the Cowboys approached the roster and handing out contracts. This episode also features a special guest, none other than BTB's own, Chia Crack.
Chia was kind enough to deliver some of his insights on this coming April's draft prospects to set the stage for the conversations over the next coming months. If you're interested, and tired of hearing your local radio station play the same three songs in an hour, give it a whirl. Just click on the link below to open the podcast in a separate window, then continue reading the great work the others have been cranking out recently.

This was great. Thanks guys

Great Job KD and Chia
Hey Chia I’m huge on Ingram as well. Not only does his talent jump off the screen but he already possess what Spencer lacks, a motor with intensity and passion. I think he would thrive opposite D Ware
CowboyWay - January 13, 2012 via mobile
me too
total RKG
very humbled dude too
idk I just love Ingram, reminds me of Justin Tuck kinda
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Total playmaker
I would be phsyced if we drafted him. I believe he could have an Aldon Smith, Von Miller type of impact… Also I agree on your BPA vs Need its definitely a combination of both needed.
CowboyWay - January 13, 2012 via mobile
yeah that was a good question that i am glad KD asked
I dont think its an exact science and I dont think one need or one BPA is the way to go
a hybrid of both theories is my stance
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Agreed... missed the podcast hope to be available for others. I'm sure it was great.
On Ingram… I love Melvin Ingram one of the few guys in the draft I actually have a man crush on…. lol. Though I just don’t see him around at 14 … period.. .he’s going to be taken in the top 10 easy.
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
listen to it , its up there
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
LOL... missed the link thank you Chia!
Old people need better eyesight… and memory… don’t quote me on that though.
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
we wont put in in the old folks home yet dont worry
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Chia did you give me credits for alerting you to Brockers going pro ?
And also how good Claiborne is ?
Also Chia about Upshaw……Greg Williams told Kirby Smart how to defend the option. This obviusly has caused great consternation in the cajun nation for Williams turning against LSU. However the reason you saw Upshaw in such good position was because Smart had his de’s and olb’s squat 1 yard outside fo their normal alignment. It makes a huge difference. If you want a more accurate feel on Upshaw’s speed go watch Bama vs Western Kentucky. You will change your mind about speed and Upshaw being in the same sentence.
football mensa - January 13, 2012
you said something last night but I didnt see anything official until today
he ran down the RB from inside the pocket to the sideline
its an impressive play regardless of the coaching scheme
Ive been digging up on Upshaw, I think he is a little faster than he is getting credit for
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Nah you will see. Upshaw is a good payer. He isn't fast.
It was official Thursday. I knew Tues. I’m helping you scoop brah. You gotta trust me on LSU players for reasons I can’t get into. I abide by the I know what I don’t know dynamic. If I don’t know it , I won’t say it.
football mensa - January 13, 2012
yeah you knew pretty early
Archie Barberio - January 14, 2012
I think you are a booster
Archie Barberio - January 14, 2012
LOL. I actually almost got in a fight with a fellow LSU fan at a Texans game for calling our Jordan Jefferson 2 seasons ago.
I keep it real about LSU just like I do about Dallas.
football mensa - January 14, 2012
keep up the work guys...
lostar2009 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
excellent work guys
I will say though, KD you would do well as a radio guy IMO. you certainly have the voice for it
I am Ironman!!! - January 13, 2012
yeah the dude has an awesome voice
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Both of you have an awesome voice. looking forward for the next podcast

You should be able to download and play it on just about anything that will play mp3s.
hookerhome - January 14, 2012
My first Podcast..
And I loved it! Keep up the great work! I think its great to be able to have voice with the name.
meisternance - January 13, 2012
Excellent stuff, fellas!
Like DCFanatic radio, except KD doesn’t ramble and knows how to conduct an interview! And Chia was laying it down; very clear and smart takes, Mr. Crack…
And: I second Ironman’s comment re: KD’s radio voice.
rabblerousr - January 13, 2012
thanks
i was kinda nervous son, never did anything like that before
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
You could have fooled me
It sounded like you are about to get a spot on ESPN; make that the NFL Network.
RenoCowboy - January 14, 2012
yeah it sounded awesome
Archie Barberio - January 14, 2012
I like DCFanatic a lot man
he gave me an interview when I was running my blog so he gave me the time of day and I respect that
I really respect that dude
but yeah, when he has Shango and Raf on, lol he does tend to ramble on
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Hey Chia
I sent you a tweet in which I asked you to DM me your email/ phone # so we can begin to plan our “BTB goes tot he Draft” extravaganza.
Should be epic!

Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
I agree with Chia's hybrid draft philosophy.
Open-minded BPA based on need evaluation. I think we got a glimpse of that emergent ideology in Dallas when Tyron was drafted. And the more that I hear from Valley Ranch this offseason, the more I believe Bruce Carter was a need pick too – but a rebuilding need pick. Of course, he’s no sure thing, but he’s shown flashes already that give me confidence we’ll appreciate him much more next season.
Garrett knew the defense needed a talent infusion that would take more than one offseason/draft; I believe he’s taken a rebuilding perspective to a greater degree than most of us previously realized. Hopefully, with a full offseason to focus on revitalizing the defense, JG and RR can bring in a few key pieces that continue turning the tide on damage done by poor contracts with subpar players.
That said, while I’d love a Melvin Ingram, Dre Kirkpatrick, or possibly a Courtney Upshaw (great instincts but not sure the burst is there for a 3-4 OLB), based on need/BPA, I don’t think Garrett will hesitate to keep investing in the O-line with a blue chipper like DeCastro if he’s there.
What do you guys think about DE Andre Branch out of Clemson? He’d convert to OLB in a 3-4 but has some monster measurables. 6’5", 260, good range and power on the edge. Could be a good 2nd or possibly great 3rd round value pick.
Anyways, great work as usual, KD and Chia. Great way to get my work day going with some Cowboys thoughts to help me procrastinate. :)
KeyOfZ - January 13, 2012 via mobile
I only watched 2-3 Clemson games this year
and when I watched Branch really didnt stand out to me
I could be wrong, he is another guy I gotta take a 2nd and 3rd look at
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
I'm no ACC fan
But I’ve seen Branch make some dominant plays. He was 1st team All-ACC and led the conference in sacks (10.5) and tackles for loss this season. He has great closing speed for the pass rush and demonstrates good lateral agility to take down RBs, but he can be inconsistent with his burst off the ball, sometimes getting blown off the line in short yardage situations or getting swallowed up by double teams. That said, he has the size (some places say 6’4"/270) and strength to stay at end and natural athleticism, agility, and length to transition to a pass-rushing OLB.
He’s no blue chip – a clear cut second rounder at best with lots of talent that needs discipline and technique – but he’ll help a 3-4 pass rush for sure. His marquee game this season was against VaTech – 11 tackles, 6 for loss, 4 sacks.
I like the kid. May become my pre-draft pet cat.
KeyOfZ - January 13, 2012
like I said
I gotta take another look, thanks for the info though
honestly, I just really don’t love Clemson players anymore, its a bias that i have to look past
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Got the Mike Hamlin 2009 draft blues, huh?
Though I must agree with you. Nothing special from the Tigers in a while
KeyOfZ - January 13, 2012
lol yeah
since Gaines Adams I havent been in love with Clemson prospects
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
As Kip sung in 'Napoleon Dynamite'
‘I love technology’
tdships - January 13, 2012
Wow Excellent work guys
Antonio S - January 13, 2012
just finished listening to the whole thing
yeah that was dope KD
nice work on chopping it up, great editing
I agree about what you were saying about Callahan, coaching 10 pro’s compared to 90 guys is a big difference
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
excellent job KD and Chia
deffinetely looking forward to more of these.
yehti - January 13, 2012 via mobile
me too
I wanna do this on the regular
I was gonna start my own podcast but it looked complicated man
blog talk radio, idk how to do all that
I am good with computers but I am no OCC
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
guys is there a way to get this on a smart phone via an i-tunes search, SB nation did not have one, there was one for blogging the boys but both entries were from 2008, HELP ME!!!!!
cowboy78 - January 13, 2012
oh idk bro
you would have to ask KD about that, I am sure he would know
what if you go to the SBNationApp or BTB site on your phone and click on the link for the podcast?
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
If you go to BTB through Safari on an iPhone
You can just click on the podcast link and it plays in Quicktime. I don’t know about other smartphones though.
KeyOfZ - January 13, 2012
I got a droid X
I just click on the link and it will work but I havent tried yet because im at home on the laptop
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Great job, guys.
Fun to have voices to put with the names. Now I don’t have to rely on the ones my imagination put in. (I always imagined KD as sounding more Donald Trump, and Chia had a Terry Bradshaw thing in my head).
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
terry bradshaw!!!!!!!!!!! come on mannnnnnnnnnn
I had people thinking I was black before I put a pic up in my fanposter of the year acceptance speach!
terry bradshaw hahahaha thats great
its weird listening to yourself, you ever done that? really weird doesnt sound like me, I actually sounded better than I thought
I sound like a younger DCFanatic kinda
KD got that strong deep voice, he could definitely do Mac and Cheese commercials and stuff
great voice
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Chia ! my bad bro I didnt read ur acceptance speech, I always thought u were black.
salas88 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
lol all good
I am a white boy with swag
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Yeah I thought you were black too
I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, I hope you sound way jersey lol
Specific - January 13, 2012
I live close to jersey but I think I have a NY more type accent
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Ha! I knew that would get under your skin, Chia.
I was picking on you. I actually didn’t have a voice for you, but I knew the TB ref would get your goat.
I have listened to myself, and oddly enough, I sound a bit like KD. Not quite as deep, but the same rhythms and pace.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
LOL- funny, because like I told you before you joined the FP
I hear your writings in my voice. Only other writer I read with my own tone of voice.
KD Drummond - January 13, 2012
lol
How do you read mine then, a series of blips and bleeps? HAL? Arnold? The possibilities are staggering.
One.Cool.Customer - January 13, 2012
I always pictured Wall E or something
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
LOL
it’s hard to describe- I guess it’s my voice with a German accent lls
I’ve talked to Dave, so I dont remember what I thought pre-that. Rabble sounds like a English professor. Not one that teaches English, but British. Even though I know he’s from here.
KegB sounds like dude from The Wire that was the middle man for The Greek in Season 2.
KD Drummond - January 13, 2012
ever seen Inglorious Bastards
that German guy, I pictured a robotic version of his voice for OCC
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
English dude? That image has gotta change!
I suppose the best way is to have me on your radio show sometime!!
rabblerousr - January 13, 2012
hahahaha
I picture Sean Connery
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
haha- i've been trying to figure it out
it’s your command of the language my dude- at least it’s cool guy English, not like Mr. Belvedere or anything like that. Like Sean Connery when he played that reclusive writer
There’s really only one poster that I read with a non “cool guy” voice, and that’s because he’s condescending so I think I choose to give him the a-hole voice
KD Drummond - January 13, 2012
hahahha I already know who you mean too hahaha
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Rabblerousr = Jeremy Irons, when he was still cool.
One.Cool.Customer - January 13, 2012
Jeremy Irons was cool? hahaha
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Sort of like a Bond villain.
Blofeld or Goldfinger. Very sophisticated, but the menace is there under the surface, and you are just glad you ain’t on your bad side.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
I like that comparison
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
I forgot that.
My wife agreed. Said it’s not weird or anything, just kinda like we grew up in the same place.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
lol all good
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
great job guys
Really enjoyed it can’t wait for the 2nd one. Any idea on when that’s coming out? Also does anyone know how much cap room dallas has this year? Is it out the question to sign a guard like nicks and a cb like finnegen?
cjs.93 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Based on Jones Jr's (Stephen's) statements
The Cowboys were actively pursuing Nnamdi Asomugha last year and that ended up being a $12 Million/year contract I believe. Cowboys offered less than that, but yeah, I would say there is a good amount of cap room. I know there are stipulations in 2011 and 2012 being “transition years” so there are different rules regarding cap penalties and dead money in those years. I am also aware of a “rollover” that is had every year so that all money you were underneath the cap in the previous year, will “rollover” to the next year as extra available cap space for your team. Still a lot to find out about this new CBA but Jerry was in on the meetings negotiating it every time so he has a leg up on completely understanding it as he was there for negotiating pretty much each page of it.
ProBowlFactory - January 13, 2012
Well...
According to Lee Ford...Cowboys are in better shape than anyone, and and everyone else is about to die.hookerhome - January 14, 2012
idk
I would love to do another one, of course if KD has me back on
I would love to do a weekly one
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
great job KD and Chia
I enjoyed it very much.
Some of my thoughts on it:
loved the intro/outro music
KD, were you reading on part of it….in the beginning? First thing that jumped out at me was how well the intro sounded. I thought either you are an excellent speaker (no uh, um, or like) or you were reading the intro. If you were reading it, you did a great job of not making it so obvious that you were (at least to me). If you were just going off notes or something…then even more impressive. The uh and um’s came later which made me think you might have read in the beginning.
Interview was great. good questions. I’m curious though, why there was such a difference in sound between you and Chia during the interview. I assume it was done over a phone call, but you sounded like you were on the phone while Chia sounded like he was “in studio”. Chia, you did a great job in answering. pretty clear with your thoughts.
Agree with the others….KD, you have a great voice for radio/podcast.
great first show. look forward to more.
beWARE94 - January 13, 2012
yeah that beat was dope
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
we did it over the phone
I didnt use my cell phone, I used my house phone because my cell doesnt work in the sticks up here
maybe thats why it sounded better on my end
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
that makes sense
thanks for the clarification.
beWARE94 - January 13, 2012
thanks for all the love everybody-
appreciate the support. First run, have some kinks to work out and will be trying to have things a bit smoother for the future runs. Look forward to working with Chia again as well as other guests. Chia did awesome for his first time. I have some exp. with cohosting my weekly radio show and doing a couple of guest spots on others shows. A bit different doing the podcast thing though.
I’ll work on getting these available through other mediums, now that I know it went over pretty well. Will be worth the add’l effort to make it available.
Thanks again all-
KD Drummond - January 13, 2012
thank you
it was an honor to do that with you, was real excited when you contacted me
I really look forward to and hope we do this on the regular
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
great job
Great job guys! What a good listen, I’m all for grabbing DeCastro if he’s there but if not we gotta go pass rush.
It's Our Deztiny88 - January 13, 2012
hey KD I love the idea
but any way you can create an RSS feed and submit it to iTunes so we can download on our iPods?
scottmaui - January 13, 2012
Super job, both of you.
Do you have any idea how often you are going to roll these out? Can we request interviews? (I would love to hear something from 5Blings or ScarletO, for instance, if you plan to keep up with talking to the fans.)
This could become habit forming.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
all I know is that I want to keep doing this
I wanted to start my own podcast, but id much rather guest spot with KD on his show
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Very nice
KD is going places.
One.Cool.Customer - January 13, 2012
oh no doubt about that

Here is some great news:
Free agent Laurent Robinson made it clear Friday that his first choice is to return to Dallas in 2012.
“I think I fit in good here,” said Robinson. “… This is where I want to be. It doesn’t matter if I’m the No. 1, 2 or 3.” Robinson insists that money won’t be the driving factor in his decision. It’s music to the ears of the Cowboys as well as Robinson’s Dynasty league owners after a career-best 54/858/11 line as a trusted outlet for Tony Romo.

macdude - January 13, 2012
Class act
definitely the RKG. Guy doesn’t get much of a chance to contribute years 1 – 4 and then comes here and has a year that rivals many of the leagues top wide receivers in terms of production per pass thrown his way. However, class act because he now he appreciates where he has come from and wants to stick somewhere that works and he know he will be utilized and appreciated rather than some random place where he will just earn a big paycheck.
ProBowlFactory - January 13, 2012
my opinion
This is an RKG player… period.. as I have said 100 times. Should still pay him a decent check… just because he deserves it. Jerry needs to get his checkbook out and make him a Cowboy for the next 5 years minimum.
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
I would look around at some of the other contracts handed out recently as a fair assessment of value
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Very good to hear
Thanks for the post I hope we can resign him ASAP. I think he should be a priority once free agency comes along
Dezisabeast88 - January 13, 2012
thank god
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Oh, please.
Please let this be true.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
it sounds kosher to me
he loves it in Dallas
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Also his rapport w Romo is a known quantity
Thinking w his agent could be – he much more likely to make performance bonuses here.
tdships - January 13, 2012
incentive based contract
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
This was great!
Very interesting, I’m looking forward to hearing more of these. My mind was blown though! Both of y’all sounded SO different from what I expected. Chia’s not black?! Lol

Lol
In my mind I had you looking and sounding a bit like Rick Ross.

I really wanted to do that on air

Glad I’m not alone.

lol
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
lol idk bro
its funny
I think its a NY thing
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Im leaning towards
DeCastro and have maybe the most dominate left side in football
Trueblue122 - January 13, 2012
yeah
one thing I should have commented on more was when KD asked me about Nicks and doubling down with DeCastro
I would be very open to that too because our OL would be amazing
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
YES YES YES!!!!
I mentioned that in one of the earlier post also.
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
I would love that
But by doing that, they’d pretty much be setting Arkin and Nagy as outcasts. Not that I care, I’d rather have an all-pro guard and a guy that’s being compared to Steve Hutchinson.
I just don’t think that’s in their plans.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
We need young back ups too...
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
Nice Podcast guys. I agree even if we sign Nicks or Grubbs, if DeCastro is BPA, I'd still take him.
Th OL would be awesome and Romo would flourish with little chance of injury.
pfloyd1 - January 13, 2012
I love the fact we went after Paul Chryst of Wisconsin
I had no idea that he was in the mix, but man that would have been a good one just because they have the best offensive lineman in the college ranks and a pretty good offense at that because of it.
ProBowlFactory - January 13, 2012
I remember the Red Haired Jesus and Chryst jokes.
Tom Ryle - January 13, 2012
Chryst just took a job somewhere I forget wher
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
Wes Bunting is raving about LSU DT Michael Brokers
Saying he could play as a 5 tech 3-4 end. I actually hopes he goes sooner and pushes another elite guy towards the Cowboys.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
he might be the guy to draft at 14
he is really good
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
I'm officially off the Upshaw bandwagon
JAG all the way.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
idk about that
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
He screams Spencer to me
The only sack he got on the BCS game, he was uncovered. I’m not high at all on him.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
its understandable
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
It's sad that we have a relatively high pick on a draft with so little blue chip talent
That’s why I’m praying for DeCastro everyday.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
its lacking in blue chip talent for sure
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
you read the Raf and Wes stuff today right?
I get what he is saying about Upshaw, but he is really hyping Hightower now, which is interesting to me
he is comparing him to Rolando McClain and that is crazy to me
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
But that's the thing
Watching the game, Hightower stood out to me way more than Upshaw.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
the thing with Hightower is
we took Carter last year, now if we took a CB like I wanted last year in the 2nd, I would consider Hightower at 14, thats how great of a fit he would be but Hightower will not be a Cowboy, he wont be taken at 14 and he wont be there in the 2nd for us
Archie Barberio - January 13, 2012
I know
I was just thinking about that too.
SportsDrunk - January 13, 2012
Very nice both of you...
I will be looking forward to the next one.
Rex Pfister - January 13, 2012
Just one comment for all the BPA people...
I’ve tried in many post to explain you always draft BPA to needs… simple as that if you don’t you end up with a bunch of players that may be great but you can only play so many QBs… If I had drafted Sam Bradford a couple years back and had the #1 pick this year… I would not be drafting Andrew Luck… (However this year I would draft him if I had the first pick and then either trade him to some team in the mid rounds for a ton of picks… and I would get at least 3 first.) or for instance last year I would not have taken Cam Newton. You do that every year… you will have 18 QB’s on your team. You have to draft to needs. I think Johnathan Stern … I think that’s his handle said that we could have sacrificed everyone we drafted from 2006-2008 for Mario. Yea… hindsight is great but honestly what would you have done with 18 Marios and no-one to cover the wide-outs. Or no running backs or wide outs. It’s a combination of the two things that makes drafting tough. You have to look at the person and make sure that he will fit within your organization also. Type of player, Quality of play, Physicality, Position, Personality, Toughness, Intelligence… everything is a factor. You don’t just draft some big dump jerk that looks like a tank because he looks like a tank. Then you prove only one thing. You are not a very good GM.
