I like the fact that he will be the OC, hopefully a better fit with Garrett then Garrett-Phillips. Quite the coach, I guess we can expect out rushing TDs to triple next year and double the year after that because that’s what he did with the Jets. What wiil he do for a team that rushed for 1,800 yards last year? We’ll probably break 2,000 and score 15 TDs.

Yeah, I would say it is a good pickup… how long before Jon Gruden shows up?

we wont know if Callahan is an upgrade until the season starts.

i did see that running game & OL in general regress at times. the Jets were pretty aggrssive about going after Spranao & replacing the current OC+OL coach. i’m going to wait until i see some preseason games before judging this hire.
if theres one positive that jumps out about the hire of Henderson is he seems to have an eye for elite talent at the CB/Safety position. theres plently of DB’s taken in the 3rd-7th rounds that become great players so hopefully he can find some value if thats the route they go

to this with the Callahan hiring. He was an Asst HC for the Jets and he doesn’t get a similar title here? There’s some grumbling in NY should have been in play for the OC job, but the team didn’t commit. Wonder if a certain twin brother put the word out…

I was thinking along the same lines

It looks like the Jets may have wanted to clean house offensively, and perhaps they let Schottenheimer save face. Can’t blame them, really—Schottenheimer and his staff weren’t getting it done, and if they’re going to stick with Mark Sanchez, they need to find a real QB whisperer for him, and it makes sense for the Jets to start over on that side of the ball.

I saw an article in the New York Post that he has turned down contract extensions this year, following the team’s refusal to let him interview for another job last off season. They wanted to keep him, and the players did, too.

Also looks like Sparano is replacing Schottenheimer.

The Jets won when they could control the line of scrimmage… and that’s how we lost. Our biggest needs were filled at coaching 1st, if there’s one thing Garrett can do its get the best coaches. Lets see what we can get out of the draft and UFA but this is a good start. If Garrett-Callahan becomes Gruden-Callahan then the NFC Championship is not far away.

Callahan...I don't know about this hire.

As a Nebraska fan Mr. Bill managed to take a team that had not had a loosing season in 38 years and screwed them up. Maybe he was not a good college guy but the word around that locker room was that he caused/allowed the whole locker room to turn on itself. It became a cancerous place. I pray that does not happen here (but it seems to have just happened in NY…so there is cause for worry that in Oakland, Nebraska and NY all had bad locker rooms with him there). Don’t want to trash him, but I am worried. I hope I can look back on this a say it is the best hire we have ever had!

Well, it always helps to hear what the people are saying who actually work with him

In early January, Jets RG Brandon Moore and LG Matt Slauson spoke highly of Callahan, hoping he stays, but there were traces of resignation in their voices.

“In our room, Callahan means everything,” said Slauson, who also played for him at Nebraska. “The guy is an incredible coach. He’s the best coach I’ve ever had in my life, and I know all the other guys say the exact same thing. The guy has saved my career twice. If he’s not here, I’ll be really bummed. He’s a huge part of our success. If he’s gone, he’ll be really missed.”

The offensive line slipped this season in run blocking and pass protection, but the inconsistency was a reflection of the entire offense, according to Moore. He called Callahan “one of the best coaches in the league.”

“He holds us accountable in that room,” Moore said. “I know things didn’t always work out like we wanted them to, but I can feel proud that room was together and working hard and fighting for each other.”

Saw that last night.

Looks like this was a good hire.

When exactly did they “move” to the big 12 and why did Osbourne win so many championships in the big 12 if that division drove nebraska into the ground?

Why did Solich do so well after Osbourne?

What you meant to say is that Callahan got rid of the power option game and tried to implent a pro-style passing offense which failed miserably. He and the AD left a once stellar program in shambles which is starting to show some life now.

But making things up must be easier though.

At Nebraska, he was managing like 90 players, not to mention a coaching staff, boosters, dealing with the university itself. Some guys are built for that. Some aren’t. Callahan obviously wasn’t. In Dallas he’ll only have to worry about 8-10 players and can just be a coach. Big difference.

that basically destroyed the team’s SB appearance by basically going out on a bender in TJ the night before the game – Barrett Robins? That was a good OL under HC Callahan, but fell apart as the team collapsed the following year.

Gruden-Callahan took at 4-12 team and made them 12-4 and AFC Champions in 2 years...

then he goes to NY and does the same thing with Ryan-Schotty – 4-12 to 9-7, 9-7, 11-5 losing in to AFC Championship games. The question is can he do it in Dallas? He’s just 1 coach but he could be an upgrade over what Garrett-Houck did for us this year.

Garrett has an advantage – more time to go get coaches, players, and players will be more prepared – especially guys who need the off-season stuff for development.

But there are often times where fans are a better judge of talent collectively in regard to specific players than individual scouts are. Why does this team keep giving Alan Ball chances?

I guess i just worded my comment wrong. But i disagree with your assesment that there are times the fans know better than the scouts. These guys do this for a living. Its there job to get it right. All I was trying to say was that they see the same things that we see. There not stupid. As for Costa, he played very well in the preseason. Very well. Starting him at center this year was the right move in my opinion. Gurode had been on his way down for a couple of years. With his contract, it was time to cut bait and move on. There are a lot of factors that go into who plays and who doesn’t that we dont ever get the chance to see or know about. Costa was the best option we had this year so thats who they played. They know Costa struggled this year. I have no doubt it will be addressed.

when you have LOFT problems on your o-line, and defensive secondary- players such as Ball get playing time.

No Way!

I dont agree with this at all. We dont know schems, we dont responsibilities etc to be able to judge the talent on the field like the team does. The team works with these people every day. Alan Ball keeps getting chances because we cant change everybody on the team. Alan has had good moments on the field and he is a decent sutuational player. We cant have a star at every position. You are flat out crazy if you think that a group of fans knows more about a player than the staff that works with them every day, meets with them every day, and coaches them nearly every day!

and neither is anyone else on this site. I love football. LOVE IT. Its my passion. I eat it, drink it, and sleep it. I DVR every game and watch it 2 and even 3 times. As a matter of fact last night I watched the Tampa game again. We all know its not rocket science. But i just don’t think any of us are equipped with the information and the knowledge that the scouts are. While we are discussing this on BTB, the guys that get paid to do this have been at work for 4 hours trying to address all the things we fuss about. It’s a pointless argument really. And I didn’t mean to start one, I should have worded my comment differently.

what are you looking for when you rewatch it 2 or 3 times?

Sometimes i will watch it just because nothing else is on tv. But mostly im looking at the offensive and defensive lines. I will literally sit there with my remote and rewind each play 5 times so that i can see how each olineman did on that particular play. I dont take notes or anything like that. I just like to see what happens in the trenches because when you are watching the game live its too hard to pay too much attention to them because you are following the ball. I also pay attention to the RB’s a lot. You can’t really look at db’s or wr’s because they aren’t in the picture the entire play.

I just like to really break things down and take the emotion out of it that I have while watching it live.

I love to watch the coaches film, you can only see a small portion of the plays on tv replays.

Where do you, or we, get Coach's film...I'm in!

And I agree with you, so much is not seen in one or two views of things!

Football is not rocket science true

BBut it is not as easy as 2+2 either. I played football since I was 8 I was taught the ins and outs of the game since before I learned to ride a bike I could read the play on the field. I’ve also been teaching my boys the same and I tell you one thing there is a big difference in a spectator I repeat this cause this is what we are SPECTATOR who watches a guy play and a coach or scout who observes and studies how a player moves reacts reads diagnoses and performs on a play by play bases. We see a guy 10 yards off from the ball think wtf is he doing get up there pressure him but what we don’t see is the playcall that the DC has given. We may know what we see while the play is going on and say yea I know that play but each DC draws up his own design of a play and we have no idea what that is. Just keep in mind that football is more than block this guy hold this side run to this point catch the ball. Most plays change as they go and that’s what we can’t see from the TV or stands.

pretty much destroys any arguement about the infallibility of coaches.

Costa as the starting center does a good job as well of making that arguement look pretty bad.

PFF said in 2008 -2010 ANdre Gurode was the 10th best center in the NFL.
In 2010 had him as the 4th best pass blocking center.

The same bunch had costa as the 30th best center overall this year. Those claiming he was better then Gurode are full of it.
They cut Gurode to save money and HOPED Costa would be good enough. They were wrong.

Gurode isn't good. He couldn't even get a job in the NFL as a C at all this year from anyone.

The Ravens finally took him as a G, he only started 5 games, guess how he score was?
Per OCC :

And before anybody starts the “We should’ve kept Gurode” chant, good old Andre racked up a -14.7 grade in five games as a starter at guard for the Ravens.

Love the Callahan hiring

Guy played QB in college so he knows the importance of a dominant offensive line. I coach oline at the high school level and attended a clinic in which Bill was a guest speaker. The thing that struck me was how technical the guy was, he broke everything down to the nitty gritty like power angles, leverage, precisely where a foot should land to the degree it should be turned. It was almost ridiculous how much of a fundamentalist he was, exactly what we need with a young offensive line!

the young OLinemen we have will be fine. There is not much difference in talent across the board in the league (with some exceptions of course) strength and technique make the difference. Callahan and Woicik will develop a much better line for the Boys next season.

I remember when Costa was first at camp a year ago and he was talking about how Ratliff was helping him with his technique.

And how important it was for him to have perfect technique due to his short arms. That he lost a lot of leverage with the shorter arms, so he had to be perfect with his hand and foot placement to make up for it.
So this hiring could really help him as well as our other OL.

Callahan is a great hire. Not sure he can lead 53 guys, but he’ll be great with 8-10. And with young guys like Smith, Nagy, Costa, Kowalski, and Arkin, not to mention another relatively inexperienced (for his age) guy in Doug Free that’s coming off a brutal year, they kind of have to have a good coach at that spot.

Really good guy, too. My wife’s uncle lives next door to Callahan up here in NJ. Not anymore, I suppose.

I saw Holland Friday at hooters in Dallas he had asked the waitress not to tell anyone who he was. Lol he was with the same guys I always see him with bit he eat all off half a hamburger which was nice to see then when he walked this younger kid maybe 15 said he big guy I know your that guy who played for Dallas this season. He laughed and said yelp that’s me shook his hand and said no worries kid next year is our year and payed for the kids and his father I assume food. Not that it matters but thought I’d share it.

He had other thoughts as far as head coach or offensive coordinator but when it comes to the o-line and specifically running the ball in power situations, he had nothing but glowing things to say about him.

The new DB coach has his work cut out him. If the Cowboys don’t bring in better personal it’ll make no difference who coaching.

The whole team will get stronger and faster, but Im really curious to see how a few of the younger guys react to Woicik. S. Lee, T. Smith, D. Murray & B. Carter.. Hopefully Carter can get acclimated to the NFL and be another S. Lee story. Lee and Murray can only get stronger and faster which will have me goin even crazier on Sundays when I watch them. I really think Smith will become a freakin Beast.. After a full season under his belt he will make the switch to the blind side, where I hope he anchors our line for another decade..

If Callahan really is what we think...

Costa will not be the center for the Dallas Cowboys in 2012. I predict that Kowalski will be. Costa—if he makes the team, will be a back-up guard. Nagy will probably be the starting RG and backup center. I think they don’t bring Kosier back and probably bring in another FA guard if Montrae can’t come back. Dockery goes…and look for another draft pick as a back-up T and the development of Parnell. Finally look for a more powerful and fired up OL with Woicik and Callahan’s help.

Jason Garrett: The Jerry Whisperer!

Face it, these hires have no Jerry fingerprints. Campo and Houck shown the door. Two respected coaches known for developing talent are on their way here.

This is good news on many levels. The best is that Garrett seems to have the magic touch to soothe the savage beast that is Jerry Jones. The horse still bucks now and again but is calming with each and every passing decision.

These are the kinds of things that just get us excited because they are change

but it is change in the areas where we struggled the most, and both of these guys seem like quality additional to the staff. Callahan’s experience as a head coach should help Garrett with some of the game management issues and ease the calls for him to get a OC other than himself.

Spranos OL's & running game was different from Garretts scheme.

Sprano likes the big hogs that mual defenders & Garrett likes more mobile players with speed.
i’m banking on that new secondary coach to find Dallas the Next D.Revis, Joe Haden or TJ Ward!.
i can wait to see who Dallas drafts. My Pet cat is J.Hosley CB from Va.Tech or L.James RB Oregon

Also, does anybody know the word on Free? Was he really playing hurt? He really regressed this year. He looked slow footed and confused out there. Last year he handled the left side pretty well.

Jerome Henderson played under Parcells, comes from that school
guy looks really smart and I love his methods after I did some research on him last night
he guided a young Darrelle Revis, TJ Ward and Joe Haden
excellent hire and he knows Rob Ryan, which is great because Rob is officially coming back now

Callahan is another great hire, he is a bad head coach but a great offensive line coach
the Jets OL was one of the best under him

Its about time!!

At this point ANYBODY was a better choice than bring Campo back. Lets be real here, he was HORRIBLE. Now Hud needed to be jettisoned as well. We needed new energy and fresh blood. Too many times I see mistakes, blown assignments, penalties happen with out fear of anything. No coaches yelling, upset, correcting. None of that. We need an infusion of talent, scheme, fundamentals and more. This is a HUGE STEP IMO.
Now can we add Sporano as an Assistant in some capcity. He will yell at his MOMMA…gotta love guys like that who make ppl accountable.
On the mention of Carl Nicks…WOW….that would help. If we can solidify the line things will be so much better. Imagine Romo not having to run for his life on every pass play. But we badly need a more massive sze Center. BTW, Does any one know what happened to the Eagles Center they used to have 2 years ago??. He a was load and mean. Can we find him off of FA and make Costa the backup.

LOL, I know he was checking the site to see the reaction of fans here.

He and his wife and 3 girls are great people. I think that they will fit well in Dallas. Not sure how they will deal with the heat of summer.
